I've been dragged kicking and screaming into the modern world.
Got me a smart phone.
Actually, it is a Smart, Stylish, Robust rugged and tough phone called "Dave", bit of a no brainer really, just had to grab it.
Anyway
I'm looking for an App to put onto it for tracking my rides on the bike, I have just tried Map my ride, but can't be bothered with the logging in caper and have less interest in tracking non existent friends I ride with or sharing my rides on a site.
Just want to have an app, go for a ride, then look at it on the computer for the roads traveled, times, elevations, speeds etc to compare fitness levels. Needs to have some accuracy with it.
Any recommendations?
Cheers
Dave

I use trails, which is more for Hiking, however has most of the functionality you mention. I use it out bush where there is no phone coverage, even when it can't show a map it records reasonably accurate info, then fills in the map later. You email the map as a file you can use on google maps, or other mapping programs, or view the stats on your phone. Easy to share it on facebook or other social media if thats your thing. Might be a charge for it, I recall getting the trial version then upgrading and thinking it was money well spent.
Stay upright!

Strava
It will automatically rank you against other riders on the same route but you can ignore it but it gets addictive. ????
Set all your rides to be private by default so it won't be shared. Do the same route and it will give you comparisons against previous rides to compare fitness levels and improvement over time
Has a website, but once your account is set up on the phone theres no logging in again unless you use the website. Just tick the remember me box and you'll not have to log in again
It's free
Works for running too

X Eleventy for Strava.
It is very easy to use, and the free version provides a fair few features.
TK is right though.... It can be addictive.

Either stravia
Or I have my garmin cycle computer that I just plug into the lap top and it downloads all that info automatically

I use a Garmin Forerunner 910XT GPS watch that syncs up to Garmin Connect via a dongle on the PC - and this data also syncs across to Strava. I find the Garmin Connect site woeful and hardly ever use it - though the swimming metrics are better than Strava. The Forerunner also picks up the bike and heart rate sensor telemetry via ANT so I've got one device for running, biking and swimming.
Come to think of it I am drowning in data.

yeah I hear ya re data I got to hung up in heart rate zones etc ended up just getting the Shits and riding the thing after a serious chat with a cardiologist as I thought my max heart rate should have been 182 but finding I could push into the 190's and red line at 206 which I thought was to high for a 38 year old
During stress testing with the cardiologist he just shrugged his shoulders and then basically explained that max heart rate is so varied almost no one uses the 22- your age formula any more it is now all about heart rate recovery i.e when I push 206 how much does my heart rate drop in the first 30 seconds after stopping.
The only thing I find really handy with the garmin is the cadence sensor. it has really helped improve my hill climbing by reminding me to use my gears and keep cadence above 80rpm

Yeah I don't hold much for the old age formula. I was going to go by Joe Friel's guides for determining lactate threshold heart rate but have never got round to it. I only use Heart Rate to track fitness - Average heart rate over same course.
I do find the cadence sensor to be the really useful, and it made my riding much more enjoyable. I was pushing the big gear too much and getting tired. Luckily my bike came with one built in and the Garmin picks up automatically. Happy days.

Firstly.
How good is the Myswag community? Everyone.
I have forgotten about having a Cadence thingy, is it possible for the phone app to work with a cadence pickup sender unit? Obviously I will need to buy something suitable for measuring it.
I will be needing the Cadence as I have a bad habit of low revs to and need to beat myself out of it.
Thanks everyone for the detailed responses.

Me to....When you drive up behind a pack of Mamel's and there 3 wide in the middle of the road......Makes my heart rate go up toooo
Cheers Tracker.

Cadence is so 90's, it's all about power metering now :)

That's teasing, really badly :'( :'(

Bastard I have been angling for a power meter but am not allowed by SWMBO. I was actually looking at the new Garmin system where forget the cranks the powermeters are actually built into the pedals
I was lucky enough to ride a part of the tour down under (after the race) on a bike fitted with a power meter. I thought was not a bad cyclist till I compared my watts per kg numbers compared to some of the Pro's on Norlunga hill. lets just say I would have a lot of work to do and a lot of weight to loose. We stayed in the same hotel as some of them you don't get reference of them on the bike in a group but when you are next to them it is unbelievable how small they are and how little they actually eat for the amount of energy they must expend
As to the actual question
There is a ANT sensor that plugs into the bottom of an iphone that should marry up with your cadence sensor

Strava only supports this ANT sensor (various Bluetooth sensors though)

Barsteward - that'll probably cost more than my bike

Me three - My focus is Triathlons so I usually train by myself mostly on marked cycle lanes (or single track MTB in the National Park). Try being a single rider when 30 of them come past you. There's a fair few twunts in amongst them :P

Don't get me started on the Mammils
Over here in perth they are funny
They buy 10k bikes not realising that they would go faster with a 3k bike and the other 7k spent on a personal trailer to loose the excess 20kg they are carrying around
-
Another vote for Strava - but would love a power meter!!
-
Another +1 for Strava!

If it's not on Strava it didn't happen....nough said! :cup:

Strava and MMR are pretty much the same. Strava just had more critical mass as far as local riders goes. And you have to register for either to log your rides. Both very good at what they do though and well worth the hassle of registering.
I use MMR simply because I had used it well before strava gained more recent traction and could never be botheted changing over.
Prolly better to go with the numbers if your starting out and register on strava.

Cadence is so 90's,
Struth Mate, I only recently sold my 1989 Peugeot Road Bike which I was till using when I got the flash new type.
It seems no mater what I chose then I'll need to register for it, what a Pain. I'll use the Strav and set it for private.
I ride on my own, I ride for the Fat Busted Prevention Program which I maintain, the bike shop didn't seem to understand that I didn't mind a bike with a little more work to pedal it, means I work that bit harder.
There is a group of tosses on the nth end of the Gold Coast who swarm all over the road to ride to a trendy cafe for double latte expressos and bacon breakfast over 3 hours and then ride home on their $10k bikes. Yet I happily cruise by them on my half price, last years model sell out special $1,200 jobby ignoring them when they try to talk to me as I have some old school progressive trance techno tunes in my ears.
Thanks TK for the links, it has given me something to sort through to see what I need.

Strava it is, thanks again folks, just got to get home from work now to go for a ride.

Love the mountain bike to, but sadly reoccurring shoulder problems prevent the sort of riding I want to do.

I upload to Strava from my Garmin 510 with the cadence and heart rate monitor. Then I analyse what the heart rate was through the hard sections against my speed. Strava with just the basic use from the phone is a good starting point though. :) ;)
