Hey all. Not sure if this has been posted already but thought I would anyway.
Hi Steve
Only one quick update in this message, but it's a biggie.
Please everybody be aware that
IMINTJI ROADHOUSE HAS CLOSED ITS DOORS!!
The roadhouse has been closed as a result of a dispute over lease conditions between the Aboriginal community and those contracted to run the shop. The community hopes that another company will eventually re-open the shop, but for now the roadhouse is closed indefinitely.
If you are travelling from Derby, make sure you have enough fuel and supplies to last you to Mt. Barnett Roadhouse.
If you are travelling from the Kununurra/Wyndham/El Questro side, make sure you fuel up and stock up at Mt. Barnett to last you to Derby.
This is a huge loss. Imintji Roadhouse is an icon on the Gibb River Road and a lovely place to stop at, not to mention the convenience of having two places along the road where travellers can get supplies. Let's hope that things will eventually be worked out. And until they are, throw in another jerry can or two and some extra food, and enjoy the trip regardless. One way to look at it is that this adventure trip just became a bit more adventurous again :-).
Take care and talk soon!

One of my cameramen bought a pair of shoes from here once...these white leather high-tops with psychedelic translucent rainbow soles and matching laces. They were marked $50 but I think they let them go for $10 just to get them off the shelf.
As we walked out of the door, I heard the guy behind the counter yell, "enjoy your mushrooms!"
What a long strange trip it's been...

What a shame, we were through there in July last year and the chef was fantastic. Lovely shady spot and the best pastries and breakfasts.
Do hope they are able to sort out the lease and reopen.

There was a guy that ran a tyre place there as well. Couldn't get stuff sorted so moved 10K up the road. Certainly strange stuff going on. I'll find out more when we go up there is a few weeks.

At least Nev was able to move up the road and continue ( at great personal expense). He did an oil change for us last year. it wasn't expensive and at least the oil was disposed of correctly and not dumped on the side of the road. Had a great chat while we were there too.

Ok so reading the above the store is closed but the tyre guys still open up the road
Gee glad i got the long range tank put in the dmax this week

Am I missing something here? Fuel wise did I read that you needed to have at least a 300 km range? It's only a 660 km stretch all up? What's the worry with fuel?
-
might be only 600km, but add in the side tracks etc.. and towing our trailer meant we needed a mid way topup.

The gibb is only 600k but all the side tracks is what gets you for example if you want to go down to mornington sanctuary that is another 90kms each way off the main gibb

Thanks, more understanding of the situation now.

I thought someone might benefit from our fuel figures we recorded on our Gibb River road leg of our tour in July last year.
We started from the Derby end, traveling to Winjana Gorge for our first stop over, and then from there a day trip to Tunnel creek, next was Bell gorge, Manning Gorge, Mitchell Falls, scones on the Gibb at Ellenbrae station ( yum), Home Valley station, El Questro and finished in Kununurra. Total K’s covered, 1627.
Depending on road conditions our diesel cruiser usually averages around 18lt/100 towing about 1500 kilos of loaded campertrailer. On the Gibb we averaged 19.48lt/100. The camper followed us everywhere except a day trip from Windjana Gorge to Tunnel creek, and some exploring around the El Questro property.
Our fuel stops after Derby were, Imintji (the one in question), Mt Barnett, Drysdale river station (topped up here twice), and then Kununurra. There were times we could of skipped fuelling up and kept going to the next fuel stop, but I prefer to err on the side of caution when there is a limited fuel supply available.
Imintji: At the time fuel here was advertised as the cheapest on the Gibb. Kilometers traveled from Derby, 338. Diesel used. 59.45lt. Price at that time $2.35.5. per litre
Mt Barnett: The dearest fuel on the Gibb. Kilometers traveled 186. Diesel used. 34.884lt. Price $2.50 per litre
Drysdale River station: We topped up here before heading up to Mitchell Falls. Kilometers traveled 165. Diesel used 29.63lt. Price $2.40. per litre
Drysdale River station: After returning from Mitchell Falls. Kilometers traveled 373. Diesel used 72.98lt. per litre
Kununurra: Kilometers traveled 565. Diesel used 120.04lt. Price $1.93.9 per litre
Every vehicle and setup is different, but I hope this helps someone with their fuel consumption planning.
It’s a great trip…we loved every minute of it…can’t wait to do again sometime.

Thanks for that info RWS, that is the exact route we are taking in July.
