Being ex Army and somewhat interested in Australia's history, I found it a bit strange that yesterdays mail had a limited offer to purchase a $10 Silver coin celebrating 100 years of Gallipoli and that sales were through the Macquarie Mint.
There is only a limited number of these coins available, and sounded like a half decent purchase.
Reading the little brochure, it was made clear that this coin is not Australian, it is currency from the country of Kiribati.
Now I don't know many Kiribatians (or whatever they are called) and don't recall seeing the name on uniforms at the Olympics so I had to Google it.
This Kiribati is tiny country comprised of 21 islands and has a population a bit over 100 000, and is one of the poorest countries in the world. The indigenous language is Gilbertese.
I have no intention of buying one of these celebratory coins even with free postage and a certificate of authenticity, but if anyone is interested you can go to this website:

I don't know if this is a con/scam or even if any money gets passed onto the Government of Kiribati who sound like they need it, but this could be the offer of a lifetime.

as far as I am aware Macquarie mint is not a mint as such. They are only a trading company.
(happy to be corrected if Im wrong)
If you are after legitimate coins to commemorate this years anniversary then these would be the ones to get as they are legal tender.

In saying that, nearly two hundred dollars for $1.50 of tender is a bit of a joke if you were to try and use them to buy a can of coke lol
As far as I am aware only two mints in australia make legal tender for here.

some of those above coins are dam near impossible to get. I have been looking high and low for a couple as I missed the boat on them and it isn't going to happen anytime soon. Plus I'll probably need to be a millionaire to afford them when I can find them in a few years.

I suspect it probably had something to do with licensing. Costs a small country to put "ANZAC" or "GALLIPOLI" on any marketing.
Oh! hang on Kiribati is a small country...... maybe it will be the 7th state of Australia seeing how New Zealand wont take up the offer >:D >:D

The profiteering surrounding "Gallipoli" and "Anzac" merchandise is out of control.
I am ex army, and I must admit I am fast getting sick to death of having Anzac and Gallipoli marketing shoved in my face every year.
