Title: Very low calorie diet
Post by: edz on March 26, 2015, 08:09:51 PM
Anyone else ever had to go on a VLCD before surgery,  The surgeon reckons she wants me to go the  3 x optifast meal replacement and a cup of veg per day, aprox 800 calories ..and heaps of water to shed some weight over the next two weeks ..
How did you get on and what sort of weight did you drop in a two week period .

If you are going to go the shakes, just get a good quality whey protien (about 120 calories). Go a shake for breakfast and dinner with a main meal at lunch, if you stick with Veges and meat you will drop weight & drink ltrs of water.

I have been dabbling in the nutrition thing for a few years. Not to loose weight but to add muscle but stay lean. Not easy I tell you.

One thing that I can definitely say is Quality is the key when it comes to meal replacement aka supplements. There are so many brands, types out there it would blow your mind. Sugar is bad (will add fat/weight) and allot of supplements have sugar or glucose of some kind to make them taste good but still say they are diet/ low fat supplements.

I would try and find a decent supplement shop near home and go talk to them.

I hope this helps and good luck

Neil

Not impressed with those shake things, thinking a very watchfull eye on real food for a meal  and try to keep around the 800 calories a day she wants with heaps of water..
The calorie count doesnt leave you much of a chew .

I personally would buy a quality whey protein to make your tum tum full with little to no calories.

water gets boring very quickly hey

I did the GM diet ( based on a General Motors plan for their workers ). Reckon 8kg in 7 days although I lost about 7 and have kept it off. First time I did it I got the shakes and felt crap later in the week which was my body detoxing. Basically fruit and veggies with a heap of water but set to a plan. I try to do it every 3 weeks as per my shift cycle and usually get 5 days done before I hit the weekend and temptation beats me .     It did make me more conscious of what I am eating and the quantity though.

Edz, follow your doctor's orders.   Optifast is a balanced VLCD.   Who knows what you get from the health food shop.   Not always much science behind it.   In the first couple of weeks of a VLCD you can lose several kilos but some of that initial loss will be fluid that you will rehydrate later.   Is it bariatric surgery you're undertaking?
Current medical thinking (I went to a talk by Prof Dixon of Baker Institute last Tuesday) is that obesity is like high blood pressure; your body's weight regulation set-point is too high.   Lose weight and mechanisms kick in to restore it.   Like hypertension, medication might be required.   Dr Patr80l.

Edz, follow your doctor's orders.   Optifast is a balanced VLCD.

x3 - Optifast was developed solely as a nutritionally balanced weightloss program. The veggie component is designed to reduce the risk of gallstones I believe.

My dad had to do it years ago before surgery. Can't remember his weightloss stats though. I do remember it was hard to stick to and takes a bit of dedication

I did the optifast thing a few weeks back. Got discharged from Epworth the other day after a cervical anterior discectomy and fusion.
I stuck to it rigidly and dropped 8 KG in 10 days.
You have to be disciplined.

I've been on optifast for a year.. I've been seeing a dietician in Frankston Private - Sharon Marks.

If you stick with it and do replace 3 a day, in a couple of months you will be shocked as hell how much you can lose. And that was with NO.. NIL exercise...
Last 3 mths I've been on 1 a day and not being very careful with what I eat, and it shows.. :(
Now trying to get my act together and stick with 3 a day

Dropping sugar and sugary drinks will also help massively, but I cant drink just plain water day in day out, its just too bland for me..

I've been on optifast for a year.

Now Bruce, you can't be on Optifast for a year and go to the Baxter tavern for a feed.
If you don't do it properly and replace all meals, it will not work.

As I said, I haven't been "strict", but I was for the first 9 mths... kgs were falling off.

If you rush out and eat a ton of KFC yes you will.

2 times now between weigh in's, I've had splurges on Shit food, and not put on any weight, stayed stationary..

You need to change your whole lifestyle - that's the only way to keep it off.

The veggies are also to reduce constipation. Adding a spoon of psyllium to your shake helps as well.

Having surgery as a clear goal will help you stay motivated.  You will be amazed what you can achieve this way in a few weeks.

Yea that's a great effort.
It's amazing how just eliminating sugar and bad carbs from your diet knocks off the kgs, I'm on the just got diagnosed with diabeties diet.
I wasn't very much over weight but I've lost about 5 kg without even close to starving myself by just eating better quality food.
Amazing how easy it is to be healthy when you have to

Refined sugar has not been a part of my usual diet for over 3 years now. I lost 25 kg two years ago, put most of it back on by putting sugar back in my diet, but losing it again now that it is off the menu again.

I've never had a sweet tooth and seldom ate sugar but beer and red bull, premixed spirits was where I got them

Never been one to mix spirits with soft drink myself, but I can tell you that scotch whiskey has very low carbs and very drinkable straight up with ice. I believe bourbon has a higher carb count than scotch, but not much more. I used to drink nothing but scotch and ice to keep the weight off in my younger years when I was forced to keep fit.

Cheers, Marschy

Yea i only ever drunk scotch straight unless it was premixed in cans.
Now it's not so much the carbs in alcohol but the alcohol itself effect on your pancreas, last thing I want is to end up on insulin so my love of scotch will be occasional now

Unfortunately if you want to drop the weight quickly there is only one remedy. Give up the booze and sugar for a while, sucks don't it?

Thanks Ed.
Felt like Shit so I went to the dr and rattled off a few symptoms, he did a glucometer reading on me and I was 27.5...borderline hospitalization (normal range is 4 -7)
Got it under control in a month though but the medication and change of diets kicked my arse

Throw in a 1/2 hour walk everyday with no sugar and watch the kilo's fall off. I used to do this when I lost all my weight. My heart monitor told me I was loosing 400 calories each time I went for a walk.

Yes and no......

We were about to go past the fish Co-op and the drive coupling between the engine and the leg made some rumbling noises.
So a quick U-turn and back to da marina. Should of heard it when we turned it around.  ;D
When we get back from Cairns, i'll chuck it up on the hardstand and get the leg off and sort it out. Well, not me as such, but the mechanic will.

Gotta love boats..... Bring Out Another Thousand ot three.

Old thread I know but am interested in how the ongoing weight loss and management with Optifast has gone. The diabetes monster has got me and I am now relying on medication (some of which has reported unpleasant side effects).

Edz I will send you a PM in regards to specifics if you don't mind.

Thanks
