Title: Tow ball weigh scale
Post by: grafy82 on March 24, 2015, 07:42:31 PM
Any body used or had experience with one of these before? Little dearer then some bathroom scales, but it'll save you a beating from the missus. Weighs up to 350kg too. I know it's meant to suit standard ball hitchbitbut it'd probably easily work on other types too.

Is it a good thing, i.e. better than bathroom scales?

Grabbed a Millenco one from Autoelec on Ebay. Was keen to find out how different packing made a difference as the KK is quite heavy anyway. Works very well and is simple to use and accurate (checked my first measurement by taking it to the local weighbridge).

Thanks for the link. Bit of a worry when a fairly trusted brand like hayman reece starts putting their name on cheap copied gear.

Repco have the genuine one for $49 starting tomorrow.

You will notice the Hayman Reece has nice equal increments.

The TowSafe has varying increments.  Obviously the spring (in theirs) compresses at different rates.

What do you use with a Treg hitch as it is designed for a ball coupling?

Engine crane, crane scales, sling and rated shackles.

Engine crane, crane scales, sling and rated shackles.

Level ground leave the jockey wheel connected and put the scale under the A frame just behind the treg coupling then just wind the jockey wheel up a mm or 2 off the ground.

Inherantly unstable hense the jockey wheel backup but you will get a reading

I'd take the reading with a grain of salt. i have one & when i loaded trailer onto it it went down to about 160kg, i gave it a bit of a push & pull just to settle & it then read 180kg.  I have the Towsafe one from repco. I'm not sure its accurate but couldn't be bothered to get an accurate reading  but it did confirm my suspicions that the ball weight wasn't as manufacturer stated.
