Some will be happy some wont.
Former prime minister Malcolm Fraser has died.
Malcolm Fraser was prime minister of Australia and leader of the Liberal Party from 1975 to 1983.
He was Australia's 22nd prime minister, taking the job in events so dramatic they still reverberate decades on.
Mr Fraser was sworn in as caretaker prime minister in 1975 after the Whitlam government was dismissed in a constitutional crisis that followed months of budget deadlock in the Senate.
He led the Liberals to victory in the 1975 election before being succeeded by Labor's Bob Hawke in 1983.
While the political left loathed Mr Fraser for his role in the 1975 "coup" against Gough Whitlam the pair developed a close friendship post politics.
In recent years, Mr Fraser had become an outspoken critic of the Liberal Party and quit the party in 2010 over the party's lurch to the right on issues such as immigration.

At long last another cash sucking Pollie off the public gravy train.
classy.
an admirable elder statesman that our current politicians could learn a lot from.
vale malcolm fraser.
-
Kind of poetic that he went not long after Whitlam. Another one of the 'old guard' passes on.

X2! Especially given how active he's been in caring organisations over the past couple of decades.

Nice comment dickhead.

Seen some interviews with him and he's actualy a very intelligent man with Australians wellbeing as his first priority.
Unlike some of the others

What a disgusting contemptuous thing to say. Trolling is not something I expect to see on this site.
-
If we didn't have politicians we'd still have a monarchy or a dictatorship. We get what we choose.
I came to admire Malcolm Fraser very much for his humanity and his courage in criticising wrong where he saw it, even though that caused him to become estranged from the very party he had led in Govt. His views were at odds with many intolerant comments such as I have read here over the years.
We are poorer for the loss of the man, Gough Whitlam and Tom Uren.

user name stands to reason if you go around placing comments like this

Hi Ben apologies for upsetting you and others.
My comment is hardly a troll. I personally cannot stand politicians who after so many years of being kicked out of office are still living off the taxpayer with their snout in the trough.
He was also a married man who was caught in a whorehouse without his trousers . No respect for him from me

then respect his family, at least.
you have no idea if he is actually taking tax payers money. it is a choice that politicians make, to accept the benefits. yes, a lot do, but some choose to use the money and benefits to help others.
he may have given everything he received to charity. you have no idea.
and as for the whorehouse... no evidence to suggest wrongdoing. his wife obviously believed him.... must be nice to be perfect.

bahahahahaha Thanks paul, spat beer on the keyboard. :cup:

He was a pompous prat who gave the world the disaster of modern Zimbabwe under the tyrant Mugabe and allowed the first tidal wave of Lebanese Muslims to wash into Australia, thus opening the door to the "benefits" of multiculturalism that are getting ready to tear this nation apart, violently.
Yeah, thanks, Mal.
Cheers, Tony

hi all.
I must say
I remember Vietnam
dismissal
life wasn't meant to be easy
as said the affects of Muslims
etc
-
He was a conviction politician and humanitarian.
The current crew (both sides) could learn from him.

Yeah, thanks, Mal.
Cheers, Tony
A logical discussion of concepts expressed in the highlighted, would suggest we are a nation in turmoil and that that the events of 1788 were a bad idea also I guess.
On balance it is evident he did significantly more good that harm.

I wonder why the PM has not had much to say about him??

I agree with the comments made so far about him, we do have some elder statesman who were pollies, not many there now me thinks.
I was lucky enough to have meet Gough long ago in an Airport, one of the most intelligent folk I've met for sure.
OK, I do work in the oil industry, but put that aside for 1 moment.. ;D

"Tidal wave of Lebanese Muslims"
52% of Australian Lebanese are Christian
40% of Lebanese are Muslim
There are 204,000 Australian Lebanese.
There are 23,130,000 Australians.
That results in .87% of the population.
This results in less than .4% being muslim.
Yep, its a tidal wave alright. If you actually research this a bit more you will find that Lebanese Australians are imprisoned at a rate of 1.6 people per 1,000. Thats the same as the imprisonment rate for New Zealand Australians.
.12% of Australians are currently imprisoned. .16% of Lebanese Australians are currently imprisoned. WOW - .04% HIGHER!
Now delving further into your post;
"the "benefits" of multiculturalism that are getting ready to tear this nation apart, violently"
Where exactly is the evidence for this?
What violence are you talking about?
The Lindt cafe seige? A lone lunatic using Islam to justify his lunacy and thrown out of the muslim community due to his lunacy and violence. He couldnt even get the ISIL flag correct.
The Cronulla riots?
Sydney lebanese violence? That would be the drug feud going on where lebanese drug dealers are shooting other lebanese drug dealers.
Mmmmmmmm - I think your logic is flawed. Unless of course you can explain your comments with facts?
:)

Well said Jules.
I 'cut my political teeth' demonstrating against his govt and it's attacks on the achievements of the Whitlam Govt.
However, I agree with everything you said.
As to those who criticise him hor his 'nose in the trough' as he was already independently wealthy, I would be fairly sure that he would've given all his parliamentary pension to charity.
Just as I criticise him for his involvement in Kerr's coup in 1975, so I commend him for his actions and achievements since leaving office.
Also, a bit rich for Bentnose to blame him for Mugabe in Zimbabwe. Most of the outrages of Africa can be traced home to arrogant colonial powers who established colonies with no regard for existing ethnic and tribal boundaries and encouraged colonists to do little to build the capacity of indigenous peoples to eventually assume control in a democratic manner.
The Brits may have been less bloody than others, but were no less arrogant and no better in other regards.
-
Dazzler is correct. Growing up in the bankstown district in the 70s the two minority's that benefitted from Frasiers time were the Vietnamese and the Christian Lebanese from the then war.
As above Just like with Whitlams passing , I think a little respect at this time is due irrespective of ones opinions.

Just wondering, what's is wrong with the Lebanese folk again?
I'm a Picnic Point boy, left when my Apprenticeship was done. I'll never live in Sydney again, but that is beside the point.
I am privileged to say that last December when i was in Sydney for a week, i complained to my mate that there is no good Lebanese food to be found on the Gold Coast.
He took me to a fine restaurant, 1 suburb to the east from banksown, forget the name, is was a bookings only place and you'll be lucky to get one. We walked in, 2 aussie guys, neat Jeans, Thongs and Tee Shirts, my mate asked for a table, they said we're full, but we'll make room for you.
All of the staff came and said hi, they were very friendly. The other patrons were dressed to impress, we were slobs by comparisons (Great Perve to).
The food was exquisit.
We impressed them by ordering enough for 5, without the menu in our hands, and then ate it all.
My point is, they are mostly regular folk like the rest of us, they have their dreams and goals, just like us, and they have a few bag eggs amoung them, humm, and we don't.
Matter of fact, why am I saying "us and them"?
That is the problem there.
It is all US.
I'm a mixed breed from various nationalities......

If 0.12% of Australians are imprisoned, and 0.16% of another group is imprisoned, the imprisonment rate of the other group is 133% higher than the Australian rate isn't it?
Fortunately the base rates are 0.something percent and not 10 percent or more.
