Post by: Karen on November 30, 2009, 09:52:03 PM: Well it has come the time that I finally post this trip up. It has been discussed with a few of the crew so without further ado.......

Myswag Fraser Island Get-together May 1st - 8th 2010

Yes, we are heading to Fraser for a week starting with the QLD Labour Day long weekend. As with other trips this is not a guided tour and anyone that comes along is responsible for themselves (and their own beer)!! It is also entirely up to the individual as to how long you want to stay - no pressure to do the whole week if you don't want to.

There will be further information down the track but initially just want to get the date out there so that anyone interested can start planning. Please be aware that we will be beach camping along the eastern side of the island, therefore you will need to be mindful of the dingo issues on the island.

Feel free to indicate your interest in this trip. There will not be a limit to numbers but closer to the date we will be looking for confirmation of attendees to help with organisation and bookings. And if anyone has any tips or information that will help make this trip TOPS please speak up.

Yeah yeah, put us down of course Karen.......although you already knew that was a given.

Should be great weather in May, though maybe a little busy over that weekend, but then the traffic will ease for the rest of the week. Fraser is a terrible choice of places to go Karen.......the scenary, the beers, the sand, the creeks, the history, the wildlife, the expected company, the 4wding, the troop carriers full of swedish backpackers, the rum, the place is just AWESOME!!!! Fraser Island is on equal billing with Cape York for me.

We are looking forward to it already. :cheers:

You can buy grog over there but be prepared to pay through your a......., and you will also have to leave one of your kidneys there. :o

Last time we were over there it was $96 for a ctn of Crownies and $85 for a ctn of VB. Needless to say we didn't buy or need to buy, but we asked out of curiosity.

If it wasn't my busiest time at work and no one being allowed to have holidays from April to June inclusive I would be there with bells on, though on the other hand I can't speak for Yogi, he does comment that he would go without me!!! We always beach camp and have never had an issue with the dingos, considering last year we had a dingo visit our camp site everyday - just made it more exciting. However, we do make sure we follow all the rules when it comes to food etc.

Two years ago we had three days left to a three week stay on Fraser and Yogi ran out of all alcoholic beverages, OMG what were we to do ???

We decided to buy a carton of Dark and Stormy cans at Cathedral Beach ....... paying a grand total of $120.00.

Thinking of up past the Maheno a bit. It will all depend on what is available space wise for the amount of people that come along. Hope that helps.

I have seen a picture of a camper with a big hole in the side of it since we got back though..... :-X

We were going to cut a hole in the side of ours too before Fraser, but someone smart ordered their camper in 2 pac paint. ::) Which means a pretty big job. I think I would have to leave a kidney as payment as well, which would leave a hole in my side too. ;D

So that saves some cash to put towards the important things like fuel and beer for the trip.... 8)

Just to give you an idea of timings, our plan is to be on the first barge over from River Heads on Saturday morning the 1st May. We would then have a meeting point, say at Happy Valley or Eurong Beach for example, giving everyone adequate time to travel from the barge and then set off together to choose our camping spot. I understand that not everyone will arrive at this time but hopefully we can get the majority together and then there will be arrangements in place for the rest to locate us. As to how long you stay is entirely up to you. Our departure will be Saturday 8th May and more than likely on the afternoon barge.

I have spoken to Fraser Island Ferry's today and bookings can be made as soon as you like. For those travelling from the North down to Fraser I would advise that this be done sooner rather than later as the barge only runs 3 times a day from River Heads. We will be booking on the 8.30am departure. The following websites should help:

It is entirely up to the individual on where they want to camp. We will be camping on the beach which means no facilities other than what we provide ourselves. This includes toilets, showers and power. If anyone requires any of these 'nice conveniences' then I would think you would need to look at the designated campgrounds which will provide these for you. We will have a porta-potti with us and will rig up a shower for when we start to get a bit on the nose.

Sorry, not sure on the sand spear thing. I know that fresh water is available at various locations so if you needed you could fill some jerry-cans once you run out. Hope this helps.

Hey Les,

Christmas was pretty good. Boxing Day was better though as we sat down at the caravan park, swam at the beach, drank beer and ate prawns. No hype and no hot kitchen. Spending NYE tonight with the Ketsi's at a local restaurant, should be a big one. Hope it wasn't too hot in Rocky for you.

So the best place for your departure is from River Heads which is basically on the way to Hervey Bay but you turn off just before. It is about a 30 minute barge trip over to Fraser. Just enough time to let some air out of the tyres and a couple of coldies!! ;D

Follow the signs from Gympie to Rainbow Beach (top up your fuel tanks here) and then out to Inskip Point. 2 Manta Ray Barges run all day from 6am till 5.30pm and take about 10 mins to cross to Fraser from Inskip Point. $150 will get you and your camper across and back on Manta Ray Barges. Go to this website to buy your ticket for the barge and also your permits for the island too. We recommend them as they are run by the locals and offer great service.

Air down your tyres before getting onto the beach at Inskip Point. It is historically very powdery sand and when towing a camper, I am sure it will make for some fun to get to the barge without digging down. We've seen many people over the years do a lot of digging on Inskip. ;D ;D ;D

I'll give you the hot tip.......Don't come near us if you want peace and quiet + privacy then. Cause there will be a lot of noise O0, music 8), drinkin :cheers:, flashin :o(Nasty), partying and shananigans :P going on on this trip......but hey, each to their own for camps and company.

The main reason given was potential faecal contamination of the water (though I have seen people using them but if you get caught you will be fined as the rangers come through on a regular basis checking your food boxes are secure and your not leaving food scraps ect around to attract the dingos. That also a big fine ....... lol)

Hey sorry we couldn't catch up over the new year too Ketsi, but see how we go next month. Might catch up at Bribie Tri if Julie is still going to have a crack at it. We'll be there again.

On our Saturday arrival there is a high at 9.30am
Sunday 10.15am
Monday 11am
Tuesday 12 midday
Wednesday 1.15pm
Thursday 2.45pm

Depending on how much beach there is at the time, we may have to stick to inland roads OR, we could subject ourselves to just sit around, relax, drink, eat, chew the fat, and wait till Wednesday morning to hit the beach north. What a terrible quandry....... ;D ;D ;D

Traditionally the beach apparently takes 1-2 weeks to allow the tides to reform the beach again after bad weather washing the sand away. So we need to hope these cyclones disappear fast.

"Kamp Cyclone Battering" will definately want to hope that this weather subsides, cause "Kamp Komfort Zone" would be quite distressed to see them left out in the elements in the dunes......... >:D

Might even find some of the softer knitting camp crowd seeking shelter in the peacefull surrounds of the well protected beach community..... I dare say between the cape york, lifestyle and ballroom additioned trackabout we will be plenty accommodated for any of mother natures elements she wants to sprinkle us with.... ;D :-*

The beauty will be, as you will well know from your 20 odd years of enjoying it yourself MGM, is that once the weather does shine the beach is one of the most spectacular spots to be to take it all in..... 8)

I let the moths out and bought an inner spring mattress for the camper. We can't wait to get a good nights sleep every night while camping now - a week on Fraser sleeping on this mattress will be bliss. The old foam number just wasn't doing it for us.
