Title: Vehicle mounted pull out awning - what brand did you buy and review
Post by: muzza01 on February 25, 2015, 07:24:50 PM
So looking at getting a pull out awning for the Cruza. I have read mixed reviews on other forums for some of the cheaper brands about massive delays in delivery times and poor service.

I am interested to find out what brand, what size, how much $$ and if your happy with it.

Thanks in advance.

I got an open sky one from opposite lock.
It's made in South Africa.
A bit on the dear side but it Shits all over the cheap one my brother has ( Kings).
I had mine up camping on Fraser and it rained at night I had it too flat and it pooled but did not break or leak.
Sat under my brothers and it rained and it leaked like a sieve.
His just looks cheap up against mine.

I have since brought one for the camper off ebay that supposed to be an Open sky. I havent mounted it yet but it does look very similar to my open sky. The package did say made in South Africa but it doesnt have the open sky emblem on the cover.

As you can see I got a 3m out for the camper but my 4b one is 2.5 long 2m out.

Looks like the bay seller only has 3m out.

Muzza, have you checked out the thread recently posted on Wing Awnings.  Seems to be good quality canvas and fittings on it.

Polaris innovations in Wacol brisbane. Had a side and rear awning made very happy with how solid of a unit it is. Self standing in light breeze, everything was supplied no cheap ropes or pegs good quality gear. Coey on this forum bought one and had it shipped to Victoria for a small fee so delivery isn't an issue. Well worth a look IMHO.

Yeah I did but I am after the type and size like the one kleyny has.  Basically I want an awning but I wouldn't mind one that you can put walls on as well.

At the moment we have an ensuite that houses our shower and toilet, it takes around 15 mins to setup. I like the idea of turning an awning into an ensuite as well. It would be bigger and wouldn't take any longer to setup, maybe less.

hey Muzza,

I was negotiating side awnings to come over in my first shipment. quality 280gsm canvas, ally hinges, stainless fittings etc.
quite frankly, as there is a glut of these 'cheapy' ripstop awnings on the market, selling cheaper than I can land mine, I was going to focus solely on wing awnings, as I decided the market for a 'quality' side awning had disappeared in the rush for bottom price.

I can supply the side awning and all side walls (250 x250, or 300 x 250cm) - if you are keen on the awning and walls, I am keen to have someone over here 'test drive' one for me, and can have one included in my shipment - pm me if you are serious, and I can shoot you a quote for the whole lot.
if there is interest from Swaggers and the general market in paying a bit more for the quality, I may reconsider my approach to offering these...

I have an OZtrail,
It works well and does what it is supposed to do, quality seems ok. It's been up in wind and rain no probs. you can buy wall kits for these ones

BUT

It's had both of the poles replaced (seperately) under warranty after the cam locks seized. The first one seized first lock the day I got it home.
The new poles are slightly different to the old ones and they have been working as they should so far.

I have an ARB - 2m long, 2.5m pull out on the side of the disco.

Very happy with it.

Easy to set up / pack up.

Shielded us from heavy rain (without leaking) and sunshine.

Cheers

I do like the look of this one, I tried to call his mobile to get a price for the walls but no answer.

Is this what your looking for?
If not in the ad it does say something about walls and floor for extra coin.
I communicated through the messages on ebay with little to no drama.

Another Rhino 2.5m awning here, very happy with it.
I didn't peg it down properly once and the wind blew it back over the roof. No tears in the canvas, hinges were still intact. Only issue was both bar ends at the end of the poles went missing. Managed to find one and reinstall it but had to buy a replacement arm from Rhino for $30 as they didn't sell just the bar end.

Also bought the extension, just need to work on the swag placement!

x 2.
I have the same I think, I scored it cheap from the local camping store, $60 cheaper then BCF discounted price.
I can see the cam locks being a cause for concern down the track, but I have been careful with them, and no troubles so far.
It has been up in high winds, admittedly each time blowing from over the roof of the car, it seems to cope well enough each time even though I was packing it away through the wind guts.
An extension can be added to it which will roll up and pack away as 1 bit, it is for the side and will drop to the ground. It would have been useful in the below pic, more sun shade as the afternoon crept along.

G'day Muzza,

I bought the exact same one as Kleyny has posted the link to from All Direct Shop. 3m out  x 2.5m. It's a cracker. The 3 meters is a great size. I spent weeks looking at them, couldn't find any reviews but decided on this one. The material is thicker than a lot of the name brand ones, and as thick as some of the flash ones. I have used it a few times now and have had no problems at all. The end frame also has double sail track so you can put an extension on, there are little bags for pegs and ropes, and I didn't realize until I received it that it was made in South Africa, not the china I was expecting. Delivery time was spot on. It has been on the car since September and the case still looks and feels new.

I can recommend one and would buy another.

I will put a vote in for the supa peg.
I have one of the first models made on the Patrol and it has been fantastic.
It has the extra slide on extension and extra walls are available.
I bought it very cheap ( right place at the right time with the right person - demo :) )
Will have to dig out some photos, but we have had a fire set up under this when it has been pouring rain. Apart from a lingering smoke smell, no adverse effects.

Amazing no body has suggested a Hannibal Safari awning. http://hannibalsafari.com.au/index.php?page=awnings (http://hannibalsafari.com.au/index.php?page=awnings)
If I didn't already have the rhino awning I would be looking at adapting one of these. You will not get a stronger awning and it has no poles. I was at the penrith camping show under one of these when a storm got up. The winds were blowing the pegged down annexes on campers off and this thing staid put.

What sort of money will these be with walls?

hi mate,

I haven't cemented any pricing on these.

As I can have them made in ripstop, 280 or 320gsm canvas, I also hadn't decided what level of quality I would import - however I have a philosophy of only wanting to offer better quality gear (doesn't have to top of the range, just not cheap rubbish).

For 280gsm canvas with all the quality fittings - expect around the $250 mark for 250 x 250 awning, plus $300 for 4 canvas walls and a floor to suit (some others sell only 3 walls and no floor).

Add $20 for each for 300 x 250 size.

From looking around the web, this is a very competitive price - and I may be able to offer better for MySwag members.  Feel free to pm me if you want more information or want to chat.  Mike
