Hi guys and girls
I am making some block ice for a up coming fishing trip and I was wondering if anyone adds salt to the water to make it last longer.
Does it work like putting rock salt over the top of your Ice or not

Freeze salted water.
I've never made my own but I used to buy salt flake ice and it lasts miles longer

Turn your freezer right down helps too.

The science on this is, no, it won't help, as salty water defrosts at a lower temp than pure water, ie it may melt at -1 whilst pure water would melt at zero which Is why we have icebergs, pure water floating in saltwater...

Salt will melt your ice a lot faster.

takeing salted ice on a fishing trip ...that wont impress your mates at all rusty..

To make block ice, boil the water before pouring it into your container... It'll freeze faster and better...
It's because the state of the molecules in the water are closer when frozen or boiling than at room temperature... ;)

Hi,
Freeze a slurry of water (86%) and sawdust (14%) by weight, into blocks or in plastic bottles (allow for expansion).
It is called Pykecrete.

I stuff heaps of shredded newspaper into 3 lt milk bottles, fill with water and the longer you can freeze them, the longer they seem to last,

Ok think I will just freeze water from the tap have the deep freeze turned right down

G'day Rusty,
I recomend using old Long Life Milk cartons, empty them, by whatever means u see fit....... clean them out and just fill with fresh water.... the cartons are a nice rectangular block and a handy size for packing in and around the esky. i think the material they're made from with the alfoil type of inner lining helps insulate the ice...... and being fresh water, if required u can drink it. Oh and i reckon stick them in the deep freeze for at least 7 days..... this ensures they are well and truly deep frozen......

The best homemade ice we have ever made in using old cask wine bladders as I believe the silver foil helps, but downside is they are an odd shape.
Now when I know a trip is coming up, I just freeze tap water in ice cream containers and keep them at the bottom of the deep freeze for 3 or 4 weeks beforehand.

Hey Rusty, I did this a while back and tested mythbusters style which lasted longer etc.
Don't worry about the salt, it wasn't worth the effort...trust me.

get an old keg, and fill it 75% water 15% dry ice.
I have no idea what it will do, but **** the keg will be cold
