G'Day All,
Can any one tell me ...Do vents in canopy roof stop most of the dust penetration ??
Cheers Tracker.

I have a vent at the back of my ARB canopy. The bottom corners of the ARB rear window were the only holes I couldn't seem to seal properly in my dual cab tub so fitted the vent. It keeps the dust from coming in through these holes.
But, the vent is limited in what it can do. You will need to seal up the tub and canopy as best as you can if you want the vent to be effective. There is no way that little vent could have pressurised my tub and canopy with the original holes and gaps in it. There were four large holes up under the top rail (and dust did flood up through these), the front of the tub was not sealed (to drain water) and the tailgate was not sealed (again to drain water). I sealed all of these.
Obviously the vent will allow dust in if following another vehicle or driving through somebody else's dust cloud. I bought some filter foam from Clark Rubber and fit that in the vent when off the bitumen. It works really well. Also water will get in if driving through rain. You just have to remember to pop out and close the vent in the rain.

Thanks cobber,
That gives me a start point....

Had an ARB canopy on my last Ute - found that leaving the sliding window at the front of the canopy open was heaps more effective than the vent in keeping dust out. Tub wasn't sealed, did the Gibb, Oodnadatta Tack, Mereenie Loop, Dalhousie, Old Ghan track, Painted Destert, Jim Jim ect........... no real dust problem to speak of.
The canopy wasn't up to that many corrugations though, but that's another story!

I have 2 pop up vents on the front of my canopy.
They do an excellant job keeping the dust out.
Ive not had any problem with rain getting into them and I never close them...

Honestly, it beats me.
We get some serious rain at times up here, but everytime I have checked the carpet on my drawers its been dry.

Thanks Bill. Any chance of a photo of your vents? May have to install a second one which is not effected by rain.
Thanks

Yes. ARB canopy, Navara D40. Without the vent the tub would fill with dust. I hardly noticed any dust in there now, even during our 6 week central oz trip. I don't know how it works (given I haven't sealed anything else up), but it does.

As far as I know, the vent allows for the pressurisation of the canopied area... So dust is unable to get in, because the pressurised air is keeping it out, like an invisible balloon that fills up the empty space in the tub...
I think...

I have not forgotten.
Went to put up a picture last night but realised I didnt have one on my laptop or photobucket and it was to dark to get decent ones.
I will get pictures today and post them tonight.

I've got a Carryboy on the Amarok, and just open the front window about an inch...
Pressurizes the canopy nicely... When we're on a dusty trip, we put a dark colored sheet over the top of everything (dark so there is no glare) and any dust gets shaken off the sheet when we arrive

Thanks Bill. Got me beat how they don't let the rain in. Maybe the airflow over the cab?
Thanks again Aussie :cup:
