Title: Kimberley - underbed membrane heater
Post by: IanC on February 13, 2015, 07:52:17 AM: Has anyone got one of these in their Kimberly? If so how effective are they for heating the bed?

Or are they aimed at simply reducing condensation rather than keeping the bed warm?

Pretty sure this is it's primary purpose.

We put a $50 oldskool electric blanked running on a 150w can inverter in our KK for the red centre trip. Worked like a charm, didn't use much power and we only turned it off after an hour or so once the bed was toasty.

We found it to be really nice for making a nice warm bed when it is bloody cold but it does take a little while for the heat to come up through the coil mattress and as such found it to be a bit power hungry. You could however turn it on when you went to bed and it would be warm for the cool hours of the early morning.

All of the above said and without any consideration to the safety of electric blankets the latter is definitely a cheaper solution for a similar outcome. We did however use it semi regularly to 'dry out' the mattress after wet camping trips as I cannot stand mould and musty smells.

How long would you have to have it on until you could feel it through the mattress? We only have the foam mattress so would I be correct in assuming it would heat up quicker then a coil innerspring?

When it gets really cold, I just leave a t shirt and socks on.....flanno sheets and a good doona does the rest !!

Same.. even up the high country I've never wanted an elec blanket LOL!

Post by: Coiled on May 11, 2015, 10:32:50 PM: i believe these were introduced primarily/originally for the foam matresses. Works much quicker with them and assist with removing moisture that the sponge absorbs

I know they are pricey, but I like the fact that they use very little power to run them.

We were told that they are only to take moisture out of the mattress and not warm the bed.
