Title: Fuming mad.......
Post by: IanC on January 29, 2015, 08:47:37 PM
So we have been searching for an AOR for sometime and the perfect one pops up.  Jump on it straight away.  Tell the guy we are super keen, but can't get down until this weekend due to work commitments. Thats fine...

Booked flights last week, arranged transport and accommodation etc.  Confirmed arrangements with seller.  All good.  We are keen as....

Contacted seller last night to confirm address etc.  No response.

Get phone call today.

Gee sorry, someone else came to look at it and have bought it.

What ever happened to "well I have someone flying down especially from NQ to look at it this weekend.  I will let you know if they don't go ahead"

To say I am majorly peeved would be a mammoth understatement.   >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Gees mate, that sucks big time.  I once made similar arrangements for a motorcycle.  Drove a few hundred kms and arrived as the bike was being ridden out the gate.  At least I had the opportunity to shirt front the WAP seller.

Money talks and Promises walk...

Have been on the other end more than once when someone says " I;ll take it hold it for me" and lost others buyers only for them to cancel or try offer something stupid.

A deal is only a deal after a deposit is received IMHO.

If travelling draft a e-mail and get a confirmation of receipt via email and pay a deposit to hold 1st option..

Bit much to expect a seller to turn away a buyer for you in this market, if he has no deposit..

That said he should have been upfront ..he/she wants to sell ..to who, they dont care ..1st to turn up with cash will drive away with it.

I think his front lawn is the innocent victim ...LOL ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

If it was the perfect one, then as others have said....a deposit is a must..

I had a bloke put a deposit on my 4wd ( I didn't care how much , but it showed he was very interested ) and he was flying up from Mexico on the weekend, so I knew he was serious and I wouldn't have sold it before he arrived...it's something you don't do.....BUT, I had a deposit !!

Would have happily paid a deposit.  Didn't ask for one.

When I first contacted him he said the camper was actually stored 2 hours away from him and he wouldn't be able to get it till last weekend so viewing it this weekend wasn't a problem.

Just think its rude.  A simple phone call is all he had to do.  I bet he would roll over on the other buyer pretty quick if I offered more!

Only one person crankier than me at the moment..........

and yet, a lot of us on this forum (me included) talk about the loss of common decency and courtesy in today's world.

i'd be pretty pissed off too...

That was a shame.  No good going to the AOR factory, they did not have any to show when we were there last October.  We intend on buying a caravan this year and did think about selling our AOR camper but have now decided to keep it. We just love it and they are certainly well made!
What about this one in Brisbane -  http://www.campertrailers.org/camper_trader1447.htm (http://www.campertrailers.org/camper_trader1447.htm)  Kevin

Bugger, Ian.

Many of us have had this sort of thing happen to us, and it leaves a very sour taste. Lost an MGA Twin Cam after making the trip from Brisbane to Sydney, taking it for a test drive, and arranging the mechanical inspection. Same story ... :(.

I know it's not worth it, but all your arrangements already made do amount to "valuable consideration" at law. So there was a contract on foot IMHO.

Agree with others that a deposit of even $1 is better though. I put $10 holding deposit on Roo2 to hold it for 48 hours. All written on the receipt, nice and legal. Then paid 10% deposit when I decided to buy it.

Thanks Kev.  We actually have a Kimberley hardfloor at the moment and this was going to be the next step up.

We have numerous friends with Quantums and know how good they are and haven't really found anything else that fits our needs so well.

I just don't get how the courtesy of a phonecall saying I have another person interested would have been so damn difficult....  I would have thrown a deposit in his bank account immediately.

Oh well.

But if there is anyone in Brisbane looking for a painter I now know one I wouldn't be recommending.........

Ah yes, need a bit of easy life hey.  ;D  Came across a lot of them and the Matrix when we were in WA in 2013. Nice looking units. Looked good at the factory, also the new Aurora.   :cup:    I had a bloke from Gladstone ring up about a boat I was selling not that long ago. He was going to come all the way to my place to buy it but he got held up. I had another local guy who then wanted it so I did the right thing and rang the Gladstone guy back and he said to go ahead and sell it to the local bloke.  He was very grateful that I did ring him back and asked him.   :D   Kevin

I heard of the exact same thing this morning.  When a chap we know was selling his van.  Someone from Rocky was driving up to see it and while he was on the road a local chap also rang.  Our friend simply said I have someone on the way, if they don't want it you are next in line.  Ends up it wasn't what the Rocky guy was chasing and the local chap got it anyway.

AOR are looking at updating the Q so maybe we are just destined for one of the new ones.  Better keep saving though.....

When I sold my last 4WD I had 2 people phone me within about 10 minutes of each other and both sound very keen and both tell me they are driving 8 hours to look, so please hold it until they arrive. I was honest with the 2nd guy and told him I have someone looking Friday and I will let him know. First guy arrives Friday and after the test drive says yep I will buy it, but he needs a week or so as he has to look for a car loan.

Again I was honest and said upfront I have another guy coming tomorrow who already has told me his finance is already arranged. Phoned the 2nd guy back and to say it’s still on the market and Saturday morning he turns up and after a test drive and inspection he hands over a bank cheque and some cash and takes the car then and there.

I rang the first guy back and advised only because the 2nd buyer had his finance arranged, he got the car. He was good about it and understood my reasons, but still not a nice conversation to have. Funny part about it both these guys ended up knowing each other as they came from the same town and played sport together.

I'm thinking this should be part of the "old things that I miss thread"!!

Got to agree it was poor form of the seller especially considering he knew you were arranging flights and accommodation etc.

I do beleive what goes around comes around, so while you will never know. I'm sure it will come back one day and bit him on the arse.

As the original owner of Q #39, I can tell you that AOR are always updating their products.  Ours is different to many of the 1st generation models, as they add new innovations as they come to hand.

Damned good product, and damned good service.

When (if) we sell our Q, I expect it will be for another AOR product.

Mateyou did not pay a deposit

Regardless of if he asked for 1 or not it is your responsibility if you wanted it that bad

Untill a deposit is paid you are just some random on the phone who may or may not get on a plane. As far as i am concerned he has done nothing wrong

Sorry but i have had to deal with so many tire kickers and offshore oil rig workers in the past i can completly see why he took the action that he did cause a definite at your front door is better than a maybe who is just someone on the phone talking about coming down

bit harsh, IMO...

what if the seller declined the offer of a deposit?  it's on the seller to request, not the buyer to offer.  in any case, the OP was under the impression that a deposit was not necessary, considering the OP had arranged with the seller that he was flying down, had accommodation, etc.

i'd hardly call him a 'random'.

talking about coming down and actually booking flights and accomm. and relaying that info to the seller (with agreement from the seller) are two totally different things.

one courtesy phone call is all it would have taken to avoid this drama.

i guess some people on the forums can no longer complain when courtesy and decency are dispensed with....

Yep you are right I didn't.  But there were considerable discussions between is in regards to where the camper was located, not at his home, when it would be there.  He said this weekend.  We arranged a time for me to view, 2pm saturday.   Confirmation of flights etc.  It wasn't simply "Hey mate like your van, might jump on a plane and come look"

It still remains that it would have been polite to have simply called me (based on the firm arrangements I had made with him) after the other interested person called him.  If only to let me know there was another contender and give me the opportunity to give him a deposit if that is what he wanted.

At the end of the day.... by not calling me he decided I wasn't buying it, not me.

Either way that camper was not meant to be in my garage, and thats the way it has worked out.

I can understand your disappointment Ian  >:(. Hopefully you have better luck next time  :D.

I have always found that if you want something you need to 'strike whilst the iron is hot'  >:D.

I put the pressure on them by letting them know that my time is limited and that I am looking at other options. If they don't want to "go out of their way" to have the goods ready for inspection, it tells me that they might be a lazy seller or may just be 'testing the market'. Either way there is a good chance they could screw you around. A genuine seller usually does what they can to co-operate with the buyers. After all, they want to sell, but you don't have to buy!

After months of searching, I found a 90hp Honda outboard that I wanted at a great price. Rang the guy (dealer) and said I will drive up the next day (Sydney to Gold Coast). Left home at 4.30am and got to Burleigh Heads at 12.30pm (local time).

As I was strapping it on the ute, a guy turned up and wanted to buy it. Too late, the deal was done. If I had hesitated by half an hour I would have lost it. Unfortunately, the reality is 'you snooze you lose', even if the snoozing may not be your fault.

  Avo
