Title: Traveling O/S Mobile Phone sim- UK/Europe
Post by: Crisp Image on January 28, 2015, 11:01:02 AM
With all of you who travel overseas what do you do for a travel sim?
We are going O/S in April to Europe including UK and want a phone sim.
Is it better to get a sim from UK that covers EU or an international travel sim like the one from Auspost or Woolworths?
Any experience? please share.
Regards

with the company phones I call Telstra and add a 'travel pack' to the account.. not the cheapest option, but cheaper than getting smashed.
also turning data off helps.

Other staff just buy a SIMM when they arrive which works well

I use. My own and am careful. But I would look at the international options from here. Every sim I bought in an European country wouldn't cross the borders, ie the German sim wouldn't work in Italy etc PIA.

I brought the one from Aust Post for our last trip, not the cheapest travel sim around, but made it easy.

Prepaid Travel Sim (http://auspost.com.au/travel-id/prepaid-travelsim.html)

Didn't use their data - it was a bit expensive, but call rates were good - it allowed family / work to call me with minimal cost to them, or I could call them - a bit dearer.

The Missus gets a Global pack on her work phone, and we usually buy a local data sim in country.
That said, we usually stay in the 1 country (Austria - where she's from).

I'm going to the USA in 7 weeks....for a 5 1/2 week holiday and I'll reuse the el cheapo phone I bought last time I was there...with a $25 sim that will only work in the USA.

Will leave our normal phones at home and only communicate with Australia via Facebook with a tablet whenever we get free wi fi..

We did UK & bits of Europe in 2009.
In the UK where we spent the most time, we bought a prepaid UK phone (Orange) to use to call family in UK and usual local travel calls - taxi, motel bookings etc.
Can't remember now what EU countries it worked in, but it was on roaming so a little more expensive.

Calling back home we used pre-paid calling cards or Skype via wifi (sometimes free, sometimes not) .

This thread isn't about SIM cards at all >:(

You're just here to brag about your holiday.

No it is not. If I was going to brag about my holiday I would have mentioned the trip to USA as well.  OOPS! now it is out of the bag.

SWMBO bought a sim card from a local phone shop which truned out to be useless, but I got mine from the equivalent or should I say The sister to Optis and had no dramas. So make sure you go to a local provider in UK and you should be able to use in Europe as well.

It is more to do with contacting each other and making bookings and enquiries than about contacting home. Also a bit of data for directions to get to places.

Agreed with your suggested uses - that's exactly what we use our for...

our approach is
- for contacting I cop the cost as this allows me to have my usual number.
- Contacting home when required I use Skype through free WIFI where I can get it
- directions - get an app like NAVFREE and download the maps for the countries you want to travel to (saves you the need to be online)

hope this helps.

Cheers,
