Title: Answers please
Post by: woody too on December 29, 2014, 03:23:50 PM
G'day all, have been having trouble with my GPS screen suction cups, they just won't stay on, have always used spit on them but lately when ever parked in the hot sun I come back and find it off the screen, what do others use? or what do you use? any help would be much appreciated.
Regards Woody ??? >:(

Superglue will fix that, just make sure its in the correct spot first.

I have a large 7" Garmin (with a large cup) while my wife has a 5" with a smaller cup.   Hers is always falling off on hot days while mine usually stays put.
My thoughts;
Warm air expands so the vacuum is reduced.   Try to get as much air out as possible before you flip the lever.    Start with less air inside the cup when cold so the hot vacuum is better.
Bigger cups are better.
Maybe old rubber has microscopic cracks that leak the vacuum.
Dirty glass/rubber may effect the seal.   Clean them both but careful not to use anything that will damage the rubber   (Windex for the glass, warm soapy water for the rubber).   Maybe your old saliva has left a rough scum.
Try different wetting agents, eg water.   Impurities in saliva might make it less than ideal.

....and (Daily Rant).
Please put the subject of the post in the "Subject" box.   That way we don't have to open a thread in order to see if it interests us or we have a contribution to make.   Normally I don't bother opening "Help needed", "What's this?" or "Answers please" threads, and I'm sure a lot of other swagger are the same.

G'day all, J.C. I did think of using super glue but thought it would be too permanent,
Patr801 will think more about the subject in future.
xcvator, I really cleaned the screen and suction cup this morning then parked with the screen in the sun to heat up, then sprayed windex on the screen then squeezed all the air out of the suction cup that I could before clipping the thingo, it is still holding, should be good I hope.
Regards Woody.

i always found alcohol was a good medium to clean glass etc, so take a swig of Bundy then lick the screen and suction cup.

Then drink the rest of the bottle with Coke or straight.

Had that issue with a GPS a while ago, it had turned slightly yellow from the sun and no matter what I did it was no good. The sun must have distorted it slightly or something like that. A replacement fixed it

I also clean with Metho. Makes sure there is no grease left on the window. I guess Windex does the same thing.

Yes you can get Tomtoms to stick to a clean windscreen as folks say by forcing out as much air as you can before turning the suction ring but I found it's best to have a horizontal glass surface (silicon and a welding goggle glass) and I gave up with the 3M sticky, etc for the cheapy reversing camera and gave it the silicon treatment too-

x2 for the RAM mount. I use one with a single suction cap to hold the iPad for off road maps and never had an issue with it coming loose.

Used to think like that and I'm sure those mounts are great but those cheapy reversing cameras are down to $33 on fleabay and the schmick 3yr old Suzy with 35k on the clock cost me $15,500 so I figure 6-7 years knocking it about and I'll flick it on ebay and the young kid or cocky can decide if they want to remove the silicon which isn't hard.

Still I appreciate all you new Prado owners would be a bit reluctant to drag out the silicon gun or scratch the duco on the bush tracks I do

However I was thinking of all those shiny new fourbie owners in the cara parks up the NW, busily washing and polishing their tugs and trailers while our rig looked like something the cat dragged in. I worked out the moment I ditched the unsatisfactory clip on mirrors for the solid arms and webbing down the doors what the road dust was going to do to the duco under the webbing and knew instantly why I'd bought a pre-loved tug. Had to empathise with one couple who'd left their new X-Trail up the top of a narrow bush scratching track to get down to the river when we rolled up down the bottom when they'd walked. As they said they just couldn't scratch it like us just yet  :(

If you have a Ram Mount they have a lifetime guarantee, just get it replaced. When I got mine I specifically asked about the sun effecting the suction cup and they told me to bring it back for a replacement if it ever failed, no questions asked.
