So how did everyone in Brissy and surrounds fair this arvo? We got smashed here...literally actually. We have 4 smashed windows from the near golf all sized hail that hit us, neighbour has atleast 7 smashed windows also, and my brothers inlaws a few suburbs over have more then that again smashed, aswell as their skylight. Wildest storm I've seen in quite a while that one was
-
Wow. How did your cars fare?
-
I've just watched a video of my son's mate's workshop in the Gabba..................lots of broken windows in the units in the area and a few cars in their workshop lost windows and have hail damage, glad it never made it to Redlands !!
-
Wow. How did your cars fare?
all our vehicles were under cover thankfully, ran out of daylight and need to get up on roof to see how the solar panels faired aswell as the roof itself also
Brisbane has been smashed big time this arvo , massive damage about town
-
I was in the CBD when it hit, lots of cars with smashed windows and panels all banged up. Few trees down and sheet metal around the place. One of the guys on my floor saw a table and chairs fly past which were blown off a nearby apartment balcony. Green waste everywhere.
Took 3 hours to get home, luckily no damage out this way. It looks like the worst areas were the south and north eastern suburbs.
-
My wifes folks place had a tree come down on their roof in Chelmer, and there are trees down everywhere between our place and theirs.
-
......lots of cars with smashed windows and panels all banged up......
The glass and PDR blokes will be busy. Swannie's boys will be on OT.
Hope everyone gets their damage sorted quickly.
-
Posting on my phone as Optus Internet is currently out for the house. We have power but much of our suburb doesn't. Have seen pics of atleast one house missing it's roof at the Gabba, planes overturned at the local aerodrome, and heard of a B double truck blown over during the storm also. Will be interesting to see the carnage on tomorrow nights news I reckon
The glass and PDR blokes will be busy. Swannie's boys will be on OT.
Hope everyone gets their damage sorted quickly.
insurance company reckons Xmas day before they can fix our windows due to the amount of claims they already received, but will see how that pans out, matching the decorative patterned glass will be a big problem for them
-
Guys the damage is extensive. Get your claims lodged with your insurance companies asap. I currently have over 15,000 pieces of building glass to replace haven't even had the car glass replacement update

Didnt look good when it went past us down here this arvo, watched the BOM warnings of winds of 140kph and golf ball size + hail being reported ..
Looks like its going to be a wild and rough summer ..

140kph winds were recorded at the aerodrome just down the road from us, at one stage I was worried our roof would get ripped off from the wind we were copping. I actually grabbed the kids and huddled them in the corner of our kitchen at one stage as the house started to shake...never done that ever before in a storm. The noise of the hail on our tin roof had my ears ringing, the kids were crying and had their fingers in their ears trying to block out the noise...scary Shit here for a while it was.
-
Take care all you Brissy guys.Thinking of you all
Cheers
-
Hi Guys,
I left Bowen Hills at1615 and made it to Bracken Ridge on the Gateway before it caught up to us where it pelted us with golf ball size and some larger hail. The noise was something else. After a couple of minutes it moved on. Ran into it again just past the Pine bridge. One piece hit the front left of the bonnet, skidded up and hit the windscreen. Can't repeat what I yelled at the time. Just made it home to Caboolture before it struck there, but by now it didn't have the hail. Need to check tomorrow as to what damage we got.

spoke to soon...just noticed the drivers side mirror on the Maverick has been smashed ...Grrr
-
Left melb hour late.. then in holding pattern for an hour due to delayed flights
Cars ever ywhere smashed screens n Shit...
-
No damage at Deception bay or hail, but only just got home. After many buses, trains and walking. Definitely a big storm
-
Big hail in the CBD - some apple or tennis ball sized stuff outside our window in Post Office Square.
I rode home about 5:30 and streets were littered with debris. Botanic gardens a complete mess. Some big trees down at Greenslopes and one across the bikeway at the gabba. Took about 45mins instead of 25 to get home but I reckon a bus trip would've taken 90mins judging by the people waiting in the city, and the traffic.
Strangely enough we didn't get much damage at all at home at Tarragindi. Lucky. Landcruiser parked under shade cloth but somewhat exposed managed to survive - not so much hail here compared to the city.

Great footage. Shows how intense it was. Unbelievable.

I saw the pics on stalkbook mal.. Glad everyone is ok..
I was driving East along Logan motorway heading home and the hail hit us about the gateway merge.. I was doing about 80k and when the hail start I slowed down to about walking pass.
There were cars pulled over on the side of the logan in both directions
Need to have a good look at the ute to see if any damage has happened :'(
-
I also work in the city and it was the strongest winds I’ve ever seen in a storm. Now I can imagine what a cyclone would be like (well 20 minutes of a cyclone)
I work in a fairly new high rise with thick glass, but we all stayed away from the windows due to the noise of the large hail hammering against them just in case one smashed.
The road outside our building had knee deep water which was flowing like a river as I presume the drains clogged with all the hail. When I did leave work the city was littered in leaves with numerous fire alarms going off due to water damage. Then I saw multiple cars with windows and sun roofs smashed.
Getting home was nightmare, but at the same time thankful our neighbourhood only got superficial damage.
-
Came through Coopers Plains, Rocklea, Fairfield and Salisbury on my way to work this morning.
Wow. Looks like a bomb has gone off in places. We faired pretty well in Runcorn. Few small hail dents on the work ute and that's about it.
-
I was on Corro drive when the wind first hit. Ducked over the go between bridge to escape it but copped a hammering in West End. Hail was golf ball size and flying horizontally. Managed to park under a small tree but bonnet was exposed. There must be over 30 dents on it alone! I have dents down the driver side of my car from debris etc. as it was exposed to the street. Sitting in the car watching sparks fly past from a fallen power line was pretty hairy! Worst storm I've ever experienced and I've lived in Brizzy for 25yrs.
I've just been told that our office just off Montague Rd in West End was flooded. Doesn't surprise me, when left the area yesterday it looked like bomb had gone off.
Looks like I won't be heading in there today!

lot of wind, hail & rain at Greenbank, thankfully no structural damage.
Neighbours rain guage showed 47mm in 15 minutes, but some of that could be melted ice ?
Lost power about 5pm yesterday, no sign of it being restored untill maybee late tonight. Beer is getting hot as we speak :'(

Anyone want to buy a cheap pajero. Low k's and with recent mods is now a bit more aerodynamic :)

Swannie will be busy for the next year!
theres still debris and Shit everywhere... just drove past a BMW dealership, and theres at least 15 totally rooted cars ....

My wife and I are away in the camper at Somerset dam north of Brisbane, 140km / hr plus winds me and the wife hanging on for dear life, most of the annex poles are stuffed, tropical roof was ripped of one side and I think the main bows are now bent to the left. I need to call the insurance company when we get home, thankfully we are alive it was the scariest 20 minutes of our lives, I will post some pics when we get home can't do it from the mobile, unbelievable to say the least
-
Gees, glad that wasn't me. Scary enough just sitting in the car let alone trying to hang off a camper. Hope you get some satisfaction from your insurer.

No hail & only 4.9 mm rain but did it blow! No damage except for the fence. Lucky with the paddock gate & lean to. More firewood for next winter I suppose!
-
Seem to be a lot more / severe storms in the past 4-5 years.

Judging by the strength wind looking out of our work windows, I’m surprised the camper is even in one piece or wasn’t tipped over. Agree it would have been very scary.

Bugger about your place mate.
 Olly....yeah sucks that it happened, but looking at the news footage and seeing first hand the damage around Annerley today we got off lightly. Just some cleaning up of the glass and mopping up the water afterwards in our bedroom yesterday was all we had to do really, we lost an alarm clock and the gutter guard needs replacing i saw when i climbed on the roof this arvo, but that's it really. Our insurance company is onto the windows for us and we need to inform them of the gutter guard yet, but i can't complain really when i've seen houses today that are unliveable and seen hundreds of vehicles hail damaged and many of them likely to be written off, not to mention all the trees down about the suburbs also.....we've just had a minor inconvenience compared to many others, still plenty of places with no power yet either, where as we never lost ours at all luckily.

My daughter and her partner watched their cars being trashed at Highgate Hill before the windows they were watching through started smashing. All part of living in Queensland, Beautiful One Day......

Yeah too right mal. Just being catching up on the news now. Crazy. They are good photos foo, scary looking stuff
-
Looks like I should go to brissy and do some reglazing! Most of the highrise buildings will have 10mm toughened, laminated or even toughened laminated glass and this stuff can take some serious hits, pretty scary stuff from what I have seen on the idiot box, lets hope the the insurance companies don't stuff around!
I have heard already that some wont get the assessors around till next week because they don't work weekends! Seriously?
-
We copped it pretty bad at home but luckily no damage to the house.
But the land cruiser I picked up only a week ago got absolutely smashed by hail and debris as the wife was driving home from Toowoong. She was in the Fairfield/ sailsbury area when it hit. Car is stuffed. Not drivable due to the smashed windscreen and several hundred dints. Hail was golf ball to cricket ball size. Dints the size of your fist.
A street sign bounced of the car and then into another car before wrapping itself around a power pole. Tree branches bouncing off the car everywhere.
The wife is ok but very traumatized. She thought she was going to die. Especially when the road she was stuck on started to flood.

I live north west of Brisbane and barely got anything - a little bit of rain (3.5mm), very little wind and no hail. Theres one thing that I've learnt over the years is that if there is a decent storm 8 times out 10 the south side will get plastered. The storms generally loose a lot of their sting by the time the hit north of the river.
I was 23 storey up in CBD right on the river and it sounded like a jet taking off and visibility was nil. I didn't get home until 10 that night.
If only we could get a bit of rain though - its dry as ^%# here and my tanks are nearly empty.
-
Theres one thing that I've learnt over the years is that if there is a decent storm 8 times out 10 the south side will get plastered.
Rarely does it hit our suburb though, we have lived here 15 years and the only hail we've had here would be pea sized at best and i could count the number of times on one hand i reckon in that 15 year period. Most of the big storms split and go around us here, they usually come from the West and split and will hit places like Logan or the Western suburbs, we don't normally get storms here that have tracked from the South heading North and then hit us here like what happened yesterday.
-
Some amazim fotoz...
-
we are at NINGi and got some decent hale right at the start of the rain, back yard covered in ice, as the wind hit with the rain the hale dropped in size and then we got 28mm of rain.
Standard fare storm up here but I think it had lost its puff after smashing Brisbane.
I did collect some hale and we put it in the freezer for my Rum tonight ;D ;D ;D ;D
my son thinks God is telling me to drink... (we are non religious but my mother is full on so he gets the god stuff from her).
I took great amusement in his recital to her tonight that Jesus and God gave dad free ice for his rum .... ;D ;D ;D ;D
Best of luck to all who got smashed up....

Steve
Hey Steve,
Got up on the roof the next day and the solar panels appear to be fine, which did surprise me as they are laying flat on a 5 degree pitch roof. Maybe that pitch helped some though due to the angle the hail was coming in on with the 140kph wind blowing at the time, probably skidded off the panels as they hit (pretty sure they design them to be hail proof also). The gutter guard we had installed to save me climbing up on the roof of our high set house regularly has been destroyed and needs replacing, and the garage door on the shed needs replacing also i've noticed due to the hail dents in it. The Maverick lost it's side mirror and has a few hail dents in it i've noticed in the past few days, but it's just a cheap work ute and i won't get it repaired other then fixing the mirror myself. I've actually just finished downloading the pics of the gutter guard and door onto our computer a few minutes ago, so will get onto informing them about that damage ASAP.
As to the insurance....we've been pretty happy with them so far, i haven't told them about the gutter guard and garage door yet but they sorted the window stuff out quickly and we've had several follow calls from them and the glass people in the past few days to keep us informded with what's happening, so can't ask for more at the moment.
-
Here's a few pics i've snapped of typical damage most people have copped about the place....
ANYBODY IN THE AREA WITH AN ASBETOS ROOF HAS BIG PROBLEMS AT THE MOMENT, HUNDREDS OF HOLES PEPPERED IN THEM AND I KNOW THE CEILINGS INSIDE THIS HOUSE ARE DESTROYED ALSO. 9 OUT THE 10 FRONT WINDOWS ARE GONE IN THIS HOUSE AND THE TENANTS RAN FOR THEIR LIVES TO SEEK COVER ALSEWHERE MID STORM AS THE HAIL CAME THROUGH THE CEILING.

MANY PEOPLE DON'T REALISE THIER PVC DOWNPIPES HAVE HOLES IN THEM OR THE VENT PIPES ON THEIR ROOVES HAVE BEEN BROKEN OFF ASWELL (it's a minor problem but it's another thing people need to get repaired)

A lot of money right there in those few photos mal
the final insurance claim bill over Brisbane will be astronomical i reckon...our jobsite i'm on at the moment will need the 4 units we've almost finished building completely reroofed (including some new fascia and the gable rolls), a new double garage panel lift door, a couple of new 1100H X 1800W windows, new split air con system motor unit, new front door and front door frame on one unit, new aluminium panel infill fencing across front yard of unit site, plus minor repair work to things like down pipes and vent pipes and even timber ballustrading that was knocked loose by the hail, plus likely a few things i've forgotten about....and that's one address in one street of one suburb....now times that by how many places were damaged in that storm, as that's fairly standard damage from what i've seen (slightly worse then some places but nowhere near as bad as others i've seen)
-
I just got back from the assessors, I thought the prado got out of it pretty good. $3500 is the quote to fix the hail damage. 5 days without the car over the holiday period. ???
-
Heads up Queenslanders more on the way, lets hope they fizzle out before any damage is done .

Here she comes..
Fingers crossed its not as intense as last weeks storm..

Looks like we are just about to get hit near Caboolture in the next 30 mins or so.
Better not loose power for the beer fridge tonight, or I will be firing up the Engel!
-
97mm in the hour at Mt. Glorious which we're within cooee of! We recorded 0.7mm as the rain went past us to the N.E. about 1k away so our tanks are still very low. I hope others who need got it!

i laughed when i heard the original $150 million figure being the damage bill...anyone that was in a suburb badly hit by that storm would know the damage sustained by many and realised it would be much more then that, but a billion $$ damage is definately :o i think the previous biggest storm damage bill was about $500 million from memory (but i could be wrong on that figure, it rings a bell in my head for some reason)

I think the biggest storm damage was a hail storm which hit Sydney several years ago causing a couple of billion $$ damage (I'm sure I'll be corrected if necessary ;D ;D). If I remember rightly 2 years later there were still some tiled roofs waiting to be repaired 8)

i think we got a few drops on a Tally-Ho paper out of today....some rumbles of thunder but not much else in my neck of the woods. It's supposed to bucket down at the end of this week though, so i'm not to concerned with a lack of rain from today.

Here are some pics from around the park after the event as promised. The first pic is my camper, I am nothing short of amazed at the way the C/T held up in the 140km/hr winds, the wife held the annex for as long as she could till it finally collapsed under the weight of the hail. I spent the whole time inside on the side wall that was being hit by the winds trying to keep it on the ground which somehow I managed to do.
Second pic is a mates C/T he had to vacate the scene and mother nature did her thing luckily it wasn’t as bad as it looks as the annex simply unzipped and fell to the ground, had it not have unzipped itself things may have been different and the rest are pretty self explanatory.
The young blokes in the Ford were very lucky they had run for the toilet blokes when their tent blew away instead of staying in the car.
-
A few more pics, the tent pegs are from the side of my camper that the wind was hitting. They are not the strongest pegs money can buy but there is no way you could bend them like that with your hands.
-
Geez mate. Lucky for everyone

Get yaself some Brett B pegs..if they bend, you'll wake up on the Moon....
As said... lucky for all....
-
I was pretty lucky at my place all we got was a little down pour for 20 or 30 minutes then it was gone a few blokes from work that were on a site at mango hill got some hail but nothing to really worry about I think 1 work car got a small dent that you can only see when the light is at the right angle

Hey axl, from those pics, I bet the old freckle was puckering druring the storm ;D ;D
Trees are great to camp under/beside but they can be soooo dangerous in storms/wind. Property can be repaired, just glad nobody was injured.

I’m sort of glad they bent, they did not pull out of the ground (although a few of the annex pegs did) and I believe had they have not bent it may have caused the hold downs on the tent to be torn.

So true KingBilly, if there had of been more campers in the park at the time the outcome could have been very tragic. The pics only show some of the damage there were a lot more trees on the ground then the ones I photographed at least a dozen or so I reckon, and yes mate the freckle was puckering overtime..... ;D

Yep, I'm at Bris airport, just been bumped onto an earlier flight. They're trying to get as many people moved out earlier as possible. Could be messy this afternoon.

A set of O- Rings on your ropes would have let your set up flex with the wind a lot more than springs as they dont pull up solid like springs do and allow damage [ to a point of course ] There is a limit where nothing will hold up .
Ive been through quite a few wild storm blows over the last 40 odd years and our O - ringed set ups have survived better than most ..
Can get them from places that handle cement pipes etc irrigation or online .. O- Rings are approx 150mm round and 12mm thick and cost about $2 / $3 ea ,
May be an option for you to look at ..

The Gympie radar is showing we might get a little rain here in Tin Can. No hail by the looks of it.
The mountains seem to split the storms on the way in when we get 'em.
-
Was on a virgin flight from Melbourne to Brisbane. Due to land at 5pm EST. Flight diverted and now sitting at Coffs Harbour airport. Told we will here at least an hour. At least they let us off the plane and the bar sells XXXX Gold. Could be a long night

It will be done ASAP, sent you a PM
Swannie
You're a legend Swannie, cheers for pulling some strings for us :cup:

Control tower cleared us to take off, eventually. Really eerie sight as we took off into the edge of the storm and came out through the edge of it. Hope everyone ok.
Just landed back in Melbourne.

Nomad's gunna get it and I can see it from here, it looks pretty menacing too, but should miss us.
-
Oh poop, I might have spoken too soon.
On the Gympie radar, its turned a bit towards here. :-[ Either way, its got a bit of red and purple in it, so its gunna be good whoever does get it.
Anyone camping on the North Shore/ Teewah Beach might get a tad wet and windy.
-

Didn't that take a different turn
-
We got about 3 minutes of rain.........bit of thunder and lightening..........but not very very frightening......
Usually misses Noosa....Maroochydore can get hail and flash flooding and we get a sun shower. Not sure why that is but usually seems to twist around Buderim and go offshore before hitting us.
-
we got 2 storms out of it, bit of lightning and thunder, some tiny hail and 14mm of rain over the two of 'em.

We'll that was an interesting end to this afternoon....yesterday we got our smashed windows repaired from the storm that hit Brisbane about 10-12 weeks ago. This afternoon we've just copped another hail storm that lasted for a east 15 minutes, hail bigger then marble size and just didn't want to stop falling. Thankfully the new windows held up this time around, so all appears ok....have seen pics already of golf ball sized hail that hit the neighbouring suburb of Oxley, so thinking plenty of vehicles will get written off around Brisbane after today.
-
Yep it appears it's happened again!!!!

Man. We are just lucky were we are, I know people at Helensvale that got smashed again, but we only got a bit of heavy rain again.

I was at Greenslopes hospital when it hit got 1/2 way back to my cruiser when it started to hail only pea size ones and a few bigger ones no damage thankfully as I put the car under there awning at the main entrance
-
Ahh Queensland, beautiful one day 8), smashed by hail the next >:(!
You poor buggers haven't had much luck lately. Hopefully you don't cop too many more bad storms so you get a chance to recover! All the best in coping with it all.

My old GQ was in the carpark at the QEII hospital when the hail hit with some up to golfball size. Had a look at the old bus later and could't see any dents.
The hail duration lasted longer than it does in other recent storms though interestingly.

My old Ford Maverick ute has got quite a few dents in it from the pre xmas storm that hit...I didn't see many of them for several days after the storm and thought the vehicle was ok, but as i sat in traffic i kept noticing more and more dents on the bonnet (also noticed them on the roof aswell). Considering those sections of the vehicle were under a carport, it just shows how sideways that hail was coming in that day with the massive winds we had. Doesn't bother me about that damage as it's just a cheap work ute i bought, it did cost me $45 the other day to replace the smashed drivers side mirror from that same storm though.....lol

Yep, I jumped onto that 1 alirght, but I may have by accident left the wife's car outside, with a target on it, hoping........
But disappointed.

I knew it was big!
November's savage hail storm generated enough power to bend the eastern stone wall of Brisbane's gothic Anglican cathedral, it has been revealed.
St John's Cathedral, which took more than a century to build, and its surrounding buildings suffered up to $3 million worth of damage in the November 27 storm last year.
The gothic cathedral was finally completed in 2009, 108 years after the ground was broken in 1901.

You only have to drive around Moorooka and Annerley to see how big it was, there's still many houses with smashed or boarded up windows, and several places still without rooves that I've seen also. Have seen atleast one house and a unit complex where people have had to move out, as the places are unlivable.

No it's not. Unless, you listen to the radio, watch the news, then the whole of Qld is ****ed. ::)
I think people (Qlders also) forget how large this state is. The Central Coast, 1000 km away from Brisbane is in for a whole lot of hurt. Those poor bastards are about to be going through hell? The southern part of the state, coastal area, is in for a ripper of a storm.
The media are expecting a combination of Yasi, 2011 floods, Tracey, 2013 floods, possibly a few tremors, followed by a touch of drought and some of the Vic fires to add a bit more hype.
The hype on the radio today is insane down here ::)
