Title: Unwinding in the yard
Post by: robbo1172 on November 11, 2014, 06:37:27 PM
Hey all, been a bit tough the last few weeks, run down, tired and stressed so on the way home called into the nursery and grabbed a bag of eco88 fertiliser for the lawn. Sprinkled it around the front and rear lawns and watered in with seaweed extract. Next thing you know its three hours later and feeling a bit more relaxed, but I think it needs a bit more watering after dinner ;)

I bought the house eight years ago and the block is very much clay based and the turf was laid straight on the hardpan with no underlay. It was kikuyu but I planted patches of Matilda buffalo a few years ago which has all but taken over the kikuyu. This winter, the old winter grass told hold a fair bit and has now died back leaving a few bare/brown/dead spots around the joint. it is now my mission to get these sorted out.

I put a couple of bags of gypsum on a couple of weeks ago and now have fertilised. Is there anything else I should do? I may top dress in a couple of weeks if need be.

Winter grass is a real PITA to try and keep on top of. I try and pull it out and/or mow before it produces seeds, but it only takes a week of rain and it goes nuts. I'll probably wait until next winter and spray it with post emergent spray to try and keep it at bay. The problem is that the seeds remain viable for something like 7 years. Is there any way to kill the seeds? Is that what pre-emergent sprays are for?

Anyway, time for dinner and maybe one last crack at the hose before bed...

I find it quite relaxing sitting on the lawn pulling out the winter grass and other weeds.  But you have got to have time to do it regularly.

Most of those pre emergent sprays aren't good for buffalo, so take care.

lf you romp over it before it seeds that will reduce the seed impact for next year . Then keep mowing it regularly ( that means at least every 2 week winter  & weekly Summer )  To distress properly get somebody else to cut it

I put a bobcat through the entire yard front, sides, back and not one blade of grass to be seen. blue metalled the lot.  whilst at that took out some mango trees and shrubs (stop leaf rubbish). still had a lawnmower for the front verge then the council decided to fine people for parking on the verge so I told them then if its their land they can look after it. Guess what theres a bloody bylaw that says residents must maintain the verge etc etc. council thinks hes got one up on me.  Then one day I awoke to find the entire verge a moonscape. has been dead a few years now nothing grows there (does it Mr Roundup).  Slaving in the garden is not my idea of relaxing.
