Post by: Barrabart on September 07, 2014, 08:15:48 AM
G'day all,

Thought I'd share some pics that one of my work mates gave me..........  he's a Rabaul local, and this is his noisy neighbour

Great pics Bart. Watching a volcano erupt would have to one of the best things to watch live.
It must be an amazing thing to see. :cup:

Same here. My neighbour across the road has a cane farm.  After harvesting he uses the tractor to rake all the leaves in to one pile and lights it all up. Always great to watch.

Before green harvesting would of been some awesome viewing,   I miss going up to the hummock (Bundy) to watch all the fires, but don't miss the black snow all over the clean washing

Rabaul is a wonderfull place  - I spent 5 years there. The town was actually located in a caldera & the side of it suffered a lateral blast explosion creating a magnificent harbour. The volcanoes that surround it are like vents - usually Matapit (the local name for this one) historically erupts with another vent called Vulcan. I have climbed into both when not erupting of course. Matapit is very hot underfoot & has a strong smell of sulphur. At Vulcan we located the remains of a ship that was buried by ashfall tephra in the 1937 eruption
