Has anyone found the the best value for money camp trailer insurance, just started having a bit of a look and curious to know what people pay.

i am with CIL, have camper and main tent covered for about 15k and annex for 1500.
Contents covered upto $1000 with 200 excess I think
Costs be about $22 / month.
should probably up the contents now that I think about it

Have a search of the forum, theres dozens of threads on it... plenty of options.

CIL were a bit dearer than AAMI but they covered getting the trailer home if the tug was undriveable.
I did find that contents aren't covered if in the annex or tent as it is not solid. Pretty only covered if the entire unit is stolen.

Just renewed my AAMI insurance on the Cub $252 for coverage of $13,560 - $1000 contents $20m legal liability and with a $200 excess. Renewal came in at $265 so I rang and asked wether they could do better.

I have had the "Wreck of the Hesperus" (aka my box trailer) insured with the RACV for about 32 years. It cost about $125 p.a., most of which was for TPPD. Sum insured was $400.
When I started to spend serious money on have it rebuilt, I upped the value insured to $3,500. Cost rose to around $160 p.a.
When I put the tent on it, it stopped being a "box trailer", and became a "camper trailer". Original policy cancelled and a new policy issued (with a reference to the old policy number included on it, at my request ... ). Now insured for $6,500 + $1,000 contents (as long as they are in the tent part - i.e. not just under the annexe) or locked in the trailer bed. The PDS seems to cover just about everything, including storm and tempest damage, fire, vandalism, theft, etc. My contents are covered Australia wide under my householder's insurance policy, so that doesn't bother me anyway. ALWAYS read the PDS using a magnifying glass! Keep referring back to how your tag along is described on the policy schedule. This last bit is crucial. When my policy changed, they described it as one thing, but it was insured as another - i.e. not insured at all ... That was fixed with one phone call.
What was surprising is that the premium stayed much the same for double the sum insured! Apparently CTs are far less likely to be involved in accidents than are box trailers ... Including the contents cover, towing to nearest repair centre, recovery, etc, I am now paying another $20 p.a. for Rating One protection - that's all.
It is a lot cheaper per dollar insured than my car insurance ... :(.

While were on the topic of insurance, has anyone gone through the process of having their homebuilt camper assessed to be able to get insurance to cover you for a certain amount? I have done a bit of ringing around Townsville here and found an independent assessor who writes a report for the insurance company, but he wants $140 for the experience. Is there anywhere else you can get it done cheaper? I've tried the local caravan mobs but they don't do it.

I was under the impression that your box trailer was covered under your car insurance as far as third party property was concerned?
You need to check if that's the case if it isn't attached to your car when it damages the other party's property ...
ALWAYS check anything that you are not absolutely certain about with your insurer/s. There are just so many tiny cracks that they are so good at slipping through ...

My insurer has just taken my word for it. They know what these things cost, and within what limits. I have always found that all my insurers are prepared to accept reasonable values. I am certain that if I tried to insure my 7x4' box trailer and tent for $30,000, they would probably ask some embarrassing questions!

I went down this path for my previous 4wd that was 'over accessorised'. Trick with it was you had to pay for the independent assessor every year when the renewal came in, otherwise the insurance co. dropped the insured value and you were back to square one.

Bugger. I have already received a quote from CIL to insure it for $7000 and they said that amount sounded reasonable, but it would suck to have to fork out for an assessment every year.

Questions for Insurance Companies
** Make sure your trailer is listed as a Camper Trailer not Box trailer – Some companies make this mistake **
- Are you covered onroad or offroad anywhere in Australia?
- Are occasional drivers insured (EG: if I hurt myself, and mate tows it home once in a lifetime)
- Are you covered on Islands - EG Fraser Island etc.
- What is classed as an Isolated Location?
- Are there any Geographical Boundaries at all?
- Does the track have to be on a map - if so whose map, and can they supply the map?
=----- A 4wd club map (Some clubs have their own maps)
=----- Mud Map
=----- Does it need to be a Government printed map?
=----- Tourist centre maps?
=----- Private Property/Park map?
- Are you covered on 4x4 Club Properties?
- Are you covered at a 4wd Park?
- Are you covered on Private Property?
- Are you covered if someone else is towing your trailer home due to failure on your tow vehicle.
- Are you covered for Water/River Crossings?
- Are softsided trailers covered? (Some insurers have a problem with contents in what they classify as soft sided - Just be careful with CIL, while they will happily insure your camper, they are one of the mobs who may decline contents cover of a soft side camper. eg canvas)
- Are you covered if the trailer is not attached to the car?
- Are you covered for base camping - leave the trailer unattended?
- Are excess different if it needs recovering offroad to onroad?
- Are there limitations to the recovery?
- If there are repairs, is the van then delivered to your home if it is repaired in another state?
- Are you covered for inside the tent?
- Are you covered inside the Annexe if it is enclosed?
- Are you covered inside the Annexe if it is not enclosed?
- Is the annexe considered part of the tent?
- Are you covered for cameras, or electrical goods inside the trailer/annexe?
- Are locked toolboxes covered?
- Are Batteries and Solar panels covered?
- Are you covered for storm/flood damage? (eg Tree falls, struck by lightning, hail)
- What are the specifics on your flood coverage?
- Is there a Pay by the month option? If so is it extra?
- How many make-an-excuse-to-get-out-of-paying departments do you have?
- Is your PDS in Engrish, or English?

Too right mate, and top idea. Put this in a template, send it to the insurance mobs and make the buggers find all the answers for you instead of having to screw it out of them.
