Title: Help please . Is this legal ?

Am looking at this great little offroad van to buy ( rego Vic ) and am thinking of driving 5 hours to hopefully do a deal but am worried that a gas bottle on the back of a van may not be legal ? Could anyone tell my how I could find out ? There are another 2 on the draw bar so it would seem that plumbing gas through to the back from them would be a better way to go, and yes if I buy this van I'll by selling my Cub Brumby :(

Unfortunately, I don't know but if it isn't then it should be IMO at least whilst on road

It looks like it's portable as there is no regulator on the van for correct mounting, perhaps it is only relocated there for setup..... And is carried on AFrame,   Sorry Incant help any mor

Safety before legalities, like rated shackles

Illegal. Gas bottles must be stored within the confines of the camper including A frame.

It looks as though the gas bottle is connected to the hot water service above it. ???
I don't think it can be legal unless it's only there when they're camping.

Yeah illegal while on the road.

Looks like a hot water system above it, so I would say that's why it is there.

I would be making sure you have a gas inspection done to make sure the got water set up is all above board.

Good luck with the van purchase, you won't look back!

Certainly wouldn't be a deal killer.

I believe the only fuel you can carry on the back of a trailer or vehicle is diesel. It wouldn't be hard to modify this though; get the trailer inspected and if you are still happy with it, just get it relocated

Thanks so much for your replies. Went to bed down hearted..............but think it will be moderfiable !!
Like most folk here our camping is our passion and what we spend our hard earned money on.

The van is only 14.5 feet long and has so got our name on it ..We love our Cub ...but the old age thing .......

Another problem is.
You are only allowed the maximum of 2 gas bottles.
So as mentioned with the 2 already up front you will have that issue as well.

Agree.1000%. It is probably only a temporary thing whilst they are camping for their hot water. Hardly a deal breaker even if it was a permanent setup.

As mentioned, appears that it is there for the HWS, relocated from front when required.

Did anyone look and the angle of the hill it is setup on?

Where in VIC is it? Maybe a swagger can take a closer look before you drive down...

Edit - it is in Whittlesea so not too far for a few swaggers

Just get the hot water plumbed from the gas bottles at the front. Wouldn't be a hard job to run a copper pipe under the van.

Heater must be compliant as well, which is possibly not the case

HI
Definately demand a CURRENT  gas certicate before buying
If you are in Qld that is mandatory.
It appears to be DIY so what else is DIY??

Provided it is done by a LICENSED GAS FITTER!!!

Hey D4D did you check it out on the net .....................................!
THANKS ..we both have the day off work tomorrow so are happy to make the trip down to YES Whittlesea
I think for the right price it will be all doable..................
Am lucky to have a plumber son with a gas licence .......so hope I can get him home for a visit to deal with the gas issue.
It is advertised with 3 gas bottles ( or rather there are 3 on the van I think ) hard to tell ...they may have relocated one from the front for the pictures.

Wish me luck !

Don't know why you would say that, our camper came from the factory with 3 gas bottles and had no dramas getting the gas approved and then registered.

Yep heater flue is to close to the window. Will need to have an interlock on the window so heater inactive is window is opened, or the window fixed permanently closed?
