Anyone here ever gone to the junction of Western Australia / South Australia and Northern Territory... The eastern junction of the states this side of Australia is popular, but you never hear of the western one ..
-
have wondered same thing myself at times.

Well you learn something every day

Surveyor's General Corner is not as easy to get to as the other but I will do it in the next 4 years hopefully. Done the others but this remains.

Almost been there in August this year. Was caught out by the fact that the WA border is a straight line as everyone thinks.
Saw the first marker but not the second. Bit ticked off as only missed it by 127 metres.
Not a bad camp ground - has toilets and a shed.
At least I have an excuse to go back.

I think I read an article last year in 4x4 Aust mag where Ron Moon ventured there

What do they call it in golf where you just miss a sitter and they give it to you anyway?
I reckon you could claim that one! 127m out there is as close as standing on it!

Yep - that's a gimme!

I suppose I could claim it but the idea of the trip was to do the CSR and the four corners (Cameron/Poeppel/Haddden/Surveyor General) and it really irks me we missed one. More like the Grand Slam in tennis - won the Australian, the French and US opens and then came second at Wimbledon.

Being a half an hour drive from the SGC, we've been there a few times. I've heard that less people have been to the SGC than Antarctica!
The first post you see, next to the 'picnic area' only has two states on it and the other one is that bit further up
Cheers

Thanks guys ... another one to put on the bucket list ..
-
what would people say is harder or more testing from perth
CSR
or
SGC
trying to plan a trip for 2 years time for long service
but dunno if I will be up for CSR
-
The drive to the SGC would be much easier than the CSR. Up the Great Central Rd and then head east to Wingelina from Warakurna. The roads are generally well maintained with plenty of fuel stops.
From the SGC then keep heading towards Kata Tjuta and Uluru then onto the red centre Mereenie Loop. I must say, i am a bit partial to this area :D

would that take you back through Docker River John?
-
We went there July last year, enroute Kuranda to Cape Leveque - t'was only a minor detour.
Beautiful country, beautiful drive, and now, most corners visited. 8)

Yes it would. Or you can travel east from SGC then cut north and come out onto the Lasseter Highway between Curtin Springs and Mount Connor.

The issue with going east takes you through the APY Lands which is impossible to get transit permits

Oh. We went East along Giles Mulga Park Road to Mulga Park then north to the Lasseter Hway. Is that part of the APY lands ?
Can't remember if we had a permit specifically for that area among the multiple permits we had to organise for the trip but I do remember (reading ? being told ?) somewhere that it was only possible to visit SGC as part of an organised tour - so perhaps the tour organisers had a permit

Perhaps. But yes, you went through 'The Lands'. You would have gone over a grid (jumped it if going too fast) a bit before the Mulga Pk Rd.... that's the border when you were leaving the lands.
I don't understand why it's so difficult to get a permit. Permits would be another form of income stream to the Executive. Also people would stop and spend money in the stores, buy fuel where the money goes back into the individual community, and communities have their own art centre where the artist gets an earning as well. Off my soapbox now :D

I recall that grid (fortunately we were fourth in the convoy so didn't gain any flying experience) because around then the Ipad ceased to function and we lost 10 days worth of photos.
Have seen a few RAN jobs going in the APY lands that appear very lucrative and been tempted to apply but I figure there is a reason the pay is good.

Losing 10 days of photo's..... not happy Jan! I wasn't happy when the battery was flat on our camera for 2 days of our last trip.
Yes, there is a reason why the pay is good! Like the nurse who was called at 1am yesterday morning for a panadol >:D
PM me if you want a further chat

Yeah, that's pretty much the same sort of thing I started to hear when I asked around. Would come down to whether or not you can stick it out for long enough to earn a decent amount.
Unfortunately the older I get the less tolerant I become.
