Title: Tarp over camper trailer.
Post by: vicandug on August 18, 2014, 06:50:30 PM
Hi everyone.

I have searched on this and there are a lot of discussions on tarps over campers and yes, I have read them to hubby but he would like to know.

"Is it possible to put a tarp on the camper and tie it off to the ground without using poles?"
Its to reflect heat and keep warm.

Thanks

I have never bothered.........

Without poles it would defeat the purpose as I thought poles would give and air gap.......

I have used the tarp method and used a rope between two trees to give me the air gap as I don't have a tropical roof on tent.
Lifestyle ( I think ) sell a silver reflective insulated blanket which is designed to sit directly on top of canvas tent. I haven't had any any experience with this style but I'm sure there is plenty of others on here who can help.

Angus

Have done that on occasions to keep the ice off the canvas.
Never used it during the warmer months.
Just improvised on the annex poles to keep clear of the canvas.

We've done it while living in the caravan park here in Darwin using a silver tarp to help reflect the heat. While our camper has a tropical roof which works well, the awning part was getting very hot underneath so we just chucked a tarp over the lot, silver side up and it did make a difference. I do think it'd be much better with an airflow gap though.

Thanks everyone.

We have our camper that we love and have only used twice but looked at the new jayco pop top with the back ensuite and now we are thinking we should have brought a van....   We have only used camper twice for weekends.
We thought if went the tarp over the top it might help for wet weather, hot/cold nights but hubby doesn't want to carry extra poles and thought of just throwing it over the top.  Seems that it's an ok idea but the airflow is needed between the tarp and the canvas.

You could just throw some pool noodles on the roof to create an air gap.

We don't have a tropical roof on our camper so we always put a silver tarp over the camper and annex, it does help keep it cooler ( but would be even better if it had an air space ) and is great in pouring rain. The annex stays dry and we can even pack up leaving it up until the end to give shade and protection in wet weather !!

We don't need any extra poles as we use the existing annex poles on the front/sides and about five Hippo elastic straps on the back to hold it in place, works well  :cup:

If you have a few good nights on wine the silver bladders out of cardboard caskets can be re-inflated and become spacers. The can be deflated easily and pack away very small, and as they wear out you at least enjoy replacing them.
Worst case scenario, wrap them in the tarp and make a raft and drift around in dams or lakes etc.
They also make half decent targets for wasting kids time throwing rocks at them, safely of course.
Cheers

I put tennis balls on the top of the poles when putting the tarp over - I find the tarp goes over them very easily.

Now that is a GOOD IDEA  :cup:.   Sold

I have been thinking of the Tarp, not so much for heat or cold just to keep the tent dry in the rain

Post a pic and I will decide if you are good looking or not.

I like the tennis ball idea as well.  Might have to use that one.

THanks
