Andy is good, and very busy. He is handy with a welder too, so might be able to do both. 15 mins out of town in the rural area though.
Tim Wells operates out of his house in town, Ive found him very good also. 0408833741. I dont know if he has welding gear, he might be able to help.
http://www.countrydieselmaintenance.com.au/ (http://www.countrydieselmaintenance.com.au/) many people say these guys are the best around, but it comes at a price. very thorough and professional.
Kiddles are known to be very expensive and charge for things that they don't do. Use them as a last resort. You might need to call around a bit, its a busy time of year.

I don't know about welding skills, but i've dealt with A One Mechanics on Priest St a couple of times recently and they seem ok.
From all the suggestions, you should get things sorted :D

Places to go - No 1 on my list is the Desert Park -- A bit like a Desert Healesville Sanctuary including the bird flying arena ... Mandrake

Yep. The Nocturnal House is fascinating.

So would A1 be a good place to go to see about getting a tail shaft bearing replaced ? They are on the list the flat top driver gave us when took us to Heavitree Gap yesterday.

All you can do is give them a call. My couple of experiences with them have been good and i feel they are pretty honest as well.
Matt seems to have a few ideas about people and may have some knowledge on them as well.
Cheers

I think you will need to call around. I don't think that is is a specialist job, I think any mechanic should be able to do it, however it might be tricky finding someone if you are on a tight timeline. I have not heard any thing bad about A1. As I mentioned kiddles have a bad name, you have a few names now, but you might need to let your fingers do some walking!
by the way priest street is split in two, if you head that way go via smith st (off the highway), the other end is residential and you cant easily get through.

Thanks guys your local advice is much appreciated. At least we have an idea of who to avoid.
We are on our way home after 3 months away so will just have to ring and extend our leave as I am sure any decent mechanic is well booked in advance even if the parts are available in town.
It is a job Slave could do if he had the tools to do it, just like replacing the bent jockey wheel holder if he had a drill to drill the holes for it.
