Post by: theins on July 13, 2014, 09:49:46 AM
I don't believe it. It is raining in Alice Springs with a top temperature of - wait for it - 9 degrees !  :'(

This is worse than the Melbourne winter !

Raining here at Kings Creek Station as well.....and FREEZING cold!  Still the BOM website shows it just as a rain band so hopefully will dry up this afternoon.

Came through Alice about this time last year, heading home to Vic.

Started raining about 3 hours north of Alice and didn't let up until we got to the SA border.

Bucketing down, and cold, even for us Victorians. Gutters overflowing everywhere, water banked up half way across the road in places in the middle of town.

A quick check of some stats for last year - 6.8c min, 10.9c max, 13.4mm rain for July 10, 2013.

We drove through it today. Started about 2am at Gemtree, then didn't let up til we crossed the border into SA.
Wet pack up this morning. Yay!!!!!
On the plus side, the car got a great clean. Cant tell we've just spent 3 weeks on the dirt. Just a pity about the inside though!

Thanks theins, Water tank now full, 25mm of good soaking rain. I reckon there will be some pretty special wildflower display when the temp warms up. I hope you have found some sunshine to warm you now.
safe travels

Would be a great time to go for a wander when the wildflowers start to come out.

Unfortunately no time/money for that at the moment.

I gotta tell you living here through the wet years 2011 and 12 was amazing. Very green. I use to walk the dog around the golf course, it was super green and healthy, I don't play golf however it was very impressive. Unfortunately a lot of the green that pops up straight away in the bush is buffell grass, good for feeding cattle in the range lands (but they need other stuff as a well) and trying to stop erosion, but is is so successful it out grows natives. Any way so far we have had 114mm of rain, not bad but a bit sort of the average which is 280. Another soaking in a few weeks and it will be not only green, but a multi colored rainbow when it warms up, flowers of all sorts. Aug and September is a great time for walking the the center, especially day walks.

I agree, I was living in the Alice from 2009 until mid last year.

Anyone lucky to see rain on the rock? Best experience of the desert!

raining now in the centre is def great for the spring flowers as others have said. Only need 20mm during winter for them to bloom.
9 weeks and counting !!!!
