Just took our new 2ND hand camper on its maiden trip. All was good except the water which l replaced with fresh through food grade hose. It had a plastic smell and taste to it >:( . Is there any way of fixing this or is a replacement tank the way to go.
cheers woz

You could try flushing it with dilute bleach the flushing again. That might help

Apparently Tank Kleen gets a good review at doing this job. never used it but read alot about it.

We have a flexi tank for the seat well in the Pajero, holds 90 litres and is very useful, except that it tastes so foul you can not drink it, plasticy taste. I rang the manufacturer and they suggested Milton. Have not tried it yet.
Must have a look at the tank kleen

along with cleaning the tank we found filling the tank with food grade hose a must - cheap from bunnings.
-
I have a food grade hose It also has a plastic smell and taste to it :'( it also came for bunnings have tried using a round house to see if it would lose the taste but no luck . may have to try smoking in some of the solutions mentioned :'(

dont forget to flush your "solution" through the pipes no good just flushing out the tank... need to run it through your taps as well as your hose (food grade or not) to get the perfect result!
Oh and then rinse.

thanks for the info we'll give it a go

Another one for "Tank Clean"..but we just fill ours with a normal hose - never had any smell or taste issues.
Just make sure to run some water through it 1st [water the plants for 2 mins] and then empty the tank when you come home!

I've used Milton in the tanks on the Jayco, just poured it in (1 ltr) bottle and filled the tank (90 litr) if I can usually let sit over night. run the pump for a while then drain a flush, seems to be OK, in saying that I've only ever fill the tanks with town water from home using the food grade hose but only use it for washing/showering etc, usually take seperate drinking water.

Don't waste your time with all those additives, they just make the water taste like crap, get some of these and all you need to do is drain and flush your tank every six months or so
You have great tasting filtered water and you can fill the tank from any where using any hose you want :cup:

baz what if its the tank itself thats give you the taste, I run mine through food grade hose and a filter, and i was getting the plastic taste from the tank itself. Not now since ive treated it.

These filters are set up after the tank so it filters what comes out of the tank, seems to work, our tank is plastic, been working for 4yrs now and I've just replaced our old tank after it cracked on our Cape trip.
The best way to clean a water tank in my opinion is by using beer fermenter cleaner (pink stain) then flush thoroughly.

There are food grade hoses, and then there are food grade hoses, your cheapy food grade hoses smell just like the plastic cheap garden hoses, your better hoses don't.
The best hose to get is the lay flat style hoses like fire trucks use, canvas sort of thing they are, they make them on a wind up roll for carvans and stuff, but they're not cheap. Bicarb or a bit of vinegar will help with the fowl taste, but once it get into your tanks it's hard to get it out.

Our tank is not dirty just a new plastic tank.... I have flushed with BiCarb worked for a bit and about to try the Milton tabs... How many to use???? 70litre tank and per directions I need 35 tabs.... this seems a little excessive???...
I thought I would just flush it a few times in the coming days and hopefully it will come right/ok I have drinking water in the 80Series as I have a 65litre tank electric water pump and a carbon water filter and the water tastes really nice from it... but this water in the new tank stinks of plastic even washing up would put you off...
Just on a side note has anyone used Brewing Steriliser which is iodine, I would try this if the tank was dirty...
