Hello , I'm looking at buying a 17 foot jayco expanda which has the following weights on the compliance plate. The NSW RTA says "Light trailers and caravans up to 2 tonnes gross trailer mass (GTM) except those fitted with breakaway brakes." require inspections a heavy vehicle testing centre..
Does this mean it will be regarded as a heavy vehicle or have I got it wrong?
GVM 2211
Tare 1885
ATM 2360
Cheers
Don

Yiu should be exempt as the ATM is over 2 tonne so a breakaway system should be fitted

Thanks, I don't think they come with this option from factory however a quick look on ebay I see these breakaway systems only cost around $80.

When you read the RMS guidelines http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/registration/safetycheck/index.html (http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/registration/safetycheck/index.html) there is no mention of a heavy vehicle inspection for caravans, There is a mention of power assisted brakes which may mean breakaway systems rather than electric brakes. You will require a pink slip each year and if transferring from interstate as I have done with our newly acquired Jayco Expanda you will need Blue slip

Also the breakaway systems in NSW now require remote monitoring of the back up battery for the breakaway system from the tug.
