Title: does your Wife/Female tow?
Post by: Shelbyright on May 26, 2014, 07:24:32 PM
My wife and I were having a discussion this morning about women driving when you have a tow vehicle attached.

we were talkaing about our upcomming trip and I explained that its important that if anything happend to me that sheneeds to know how to hitch and unhitch the trailer, but also how to reverse and drive with the trailer attached.

she said that no other women out there would do this, and for that reason she isnt going too either. I COMPLETELY DISAGREE.

she is normally up for anything, but gets nervous about towing.

So tge quextion is, how many women out there drive while towing a vehicle?

I know im going to win this one!

Mine won't.. But I guess in an absolute life and death she would just do it. She has no problem driving our patrol both on road and off, as it's her daily, but towing is not something she enjoys.

On a long days drive I will do the first 2 hours, SWMBO the next 2 and then I will do the last 2. I think that it is important to get that break.
Not sure how she would go hooking up though and she won't drive into the servo. She also thinks that she is good a reversing, even though I will never tell her, I disagree.

My wife tows.
She doesn't like reversing with a trailer, but because she is stubborn pigheaded persistent, she will get it there eventually.
Quite capable of hooking up as well.

Annie tows the Jayco van, I must admit does a bloody good job. She did not like towing the Jimboomba with the MU though.

Mine does, and she does it well.  Lots of time towing a three horse float plus many other trailers I needed moving.

My mrs tows her 2.5tonne horse float all the time. Hooks it up, tows, etc by herself. (I hate horses!)
Does pretty well for a tiny little 5' nothing.

But I always do all the driving when I am in the car. I can't stand being a passenger for anyone!

He is the Driver and I am the Nav, by choice, but I do most of the reversing and am more than capable and willing to hitch/unhitch.

But funnily enough I do most of the driving when we are 4wd'ing.

Here is the thread from last time this topic came up.  Some funny stories: http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=32601.0 (http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=32601.0)

its god to know that if I was unable to drive she can jump straight in and take over

The Boss can hitch/unhitch , tow and reverse a tandom stock trailer so a c/t is no problem. She can also change a flat.

The boss knows the theory of it all, and has appointed herself to Supervisor.

When she gets behind the wheel she's good, but I can't convincer her to do the 4wd driver training with the club, even though they run a day where it's usually just women and keep the blokes away from them.

They do exceptionally well, probably cause they think, listen, look, do.

Us blokes do, do, what dod you say...

Mine has no intention at all to tow the trailer. Could she do it? Effortlessly.

She does however, tow me in the race car at the track, and does a fantastic job at it. Tows me from the pits to the staging lane and from the braking area back to the pits. Does a far better job than ANY of the other people who have towed me. (Flat tow with a short strap)
She tows smooth, consistently (FAST  :o ) and doesn't rip the front end out of the car on gear changes. A tow strap will last forever when she tows. When others tow, it gets run over every second use.

My other half is a hoon when driving without a trailer... scares the poop out of me.
However put a trailer on the back and she becomes a different person.
We have done some long distance towing, Me with a camper and her with a 21ft ski boat. From inner Sydney back to Wodonga. She didn't miss a beat.
She tows one of the campers to local shows (1-3 hours drive away) and does a fantastic job.
We are still working on the reversing side of things although she isn't too bad.
Can't hitch up but can unhitch.
Crikey It was only last year that I made her learn how to change a large 4wd tyre on the big one.
Got her to jack up each corner, use a breaker bar to get the wheel nuts undone and lift the 33" tyres off and on..... Wasn't that a fun day  :cup:

Cheers

She will tow but refuses to reverse with a trailer on

Before our big trip i made her do a 4wd couse so she understands how to get it into low range and some basic techniques incase of a situation whereby i cant drive

I towed our camper home from the showroom and know how to hitch/unhitch but I haven't reversed it yet. Really should just put on my big girl panties and get in there and do it!!

My wife will tow in a straight line. I am sure she could reverse it if she wanted/needed to but at this stage has not given it a go.

When hitching she controls the car and for once in my life I get to tell her where to go without getting into trouble! I am sure she could hitch and unhitch without me but the treg is a pia by yourself, particulaly as we do not have a camera on the back of the car and the trailer jockey wheel is always on blocks so we cannot move it the car just has to line up perfectly.

Mine doesn’t only because she doesn’t feel comfortable towing a trailer, but if something happened to me I know she would step up and take over the driving duties.

But anything that required reversing, just wouldn’t happen.

Mine won't tow or back . Struggles to drive a manual too, so that makes it even harder.

It's just practice, that's all.

She won't even camel toe either

I do most of the driving on short trips but share on longer trips.  Due to a family sickness we left Coral Bay about 1200k north of Perth at 4pm and drove through the night towing a 2 ton boat.  Wife drove from about 1am - 4am.

I do most of the reversing and hook ups although wife is now doing some reversing as the treg is pia.

For some reason my reversing into the camp site prior to unhitching is always out by 5cm according to her ;D

Jokes about camels aside, mine shares the driving equally but hasn't had any practice at reversing.
I think it's important that they have a go and gain experience and skill so they will be comfortable to take over in an emergency.   You don't want the first time she drives in the bush to be at night on a twisty mountain road when adrenaline is rushing through her veins and snake venom is rushing through yours.

My wife shares the driving 50-50 when on a trip towing the camper - she is uncertain when reversing but will do it if absolutely necessary (i.e. if I'm not there!).  When hitching up it's usually she who reverses up to the hitch as I direct her.

I am more than happy to tow any of our trailers and the horse float, normal tow ball hitch I have no problems hitching and unhitching including jockey wheel whether it be fold up or remove.  I will reverse any of these sometimes this takes me longer than others.  I will always have a go at hitching or unhitching the camper but I do have some trouble getting the bolt through far enough to get the pin in.  Before I had my license I used to practice backing the horse float at home through a gate way not much wider than the float taught you a lot about how far you need to turn and how to get the trailer to go where you want it to.  I say just give it a go and practice it doesn't really matter how long it takes you or how many times you have to go forwards again if you are not holding anyone up.  Go somewhere that there is a bit of space and practice.

I completely agree with Nay-DMAX, you need to go to a place with plenty of space and just practice hitching and unhitching, towing and reversing.  There are caravan towing courses available in a number of areas if you google it,  especially if you feel better not having hubby yell at teach you.  Seriously though, I believe it's very important that you wife knows how to tow the trailer in case something happens to you.  On our travels, we've seen a number of women who've been either stranded for a period of time or other people have had to disrupt their travels or work time to help transport the vans when something unfortunate has happened to their usual driving partners.  The women mostly say that they wished they had learnt how to transport before xyz happened.

I hitch and unhitch the trailer as well as tow and reverse our 9 metre caravan.  It's usually me reversing the van into sites while Firefox stands outside and directs as he likes to get it fairly level before unhitching.  Firefox has a handheld UHF that he directs me with "right hand down", "straighten up", "smidge back", etc and that works for us very well.   Most of all, if hubby is going to ask wife to learn, he must be very patient until she gets her confidence up.   Good luck!!

I do. I generally reverse the car into the camper while Weso does the hitching. I also drive while the camper is attached. I haven't really learnt to reverse with it in yet, but can and do reverse straight back while we are setting up. Need to learn how to turn while reversing. I think your wife should - firstly why should you do it all and secondly what happens if something happens to you. She is left stranded and helpless.

yep i sure do, i go on trips on my own also so i need to know how to do it,
also very important if you do to "out of the way" places, you just never can predict what can happen,
and i love the fact that i can do it, i reverse better than some men i know :-)

Reversing is not about strength, height or any other physical attribute, so why shouldn't women be just as good if not better?

i reverse better than some men i know :-)
rochelle

Does not surprise me. We had a neighbor when I was a young kid and the wife had to reverse the boat into the driveway. It was a very narrow street, the driveway sloped down and the spot where they put the boat was narrow and on an awkward angle.

He would get frustrated, exagerate the turn and use to much of the loud pedal. She took her time, was nice and smooth in the wheel  movements and almost never had to pull forward to correct.

I think women are much more patient and if they took the time to learn would be better at reversing trailers. If only LB would give it a go.
