Lately it seems that the spirit of Myswag has gone a little off the rails. Personal attacks and opinions being pushed too far.
It's a great forum lets not turn it into a slugging match.

Couldn't agree more mate. Was just mentioning this to my wife. Let's all remember why we joined this forum in the first place. Our membership base has so much knowledge and fun to share and offer with each other, let's just focus on that. I have no doubt we will.

Yep, don't understand this for and against business.
I thought this Forum discussed subjects without rancour.
Seems I was wrong.

Biggest problem when Forums get too large, too many personalities, especially keyboard ones, and that is when the good ones leave.

I must of been reading the wrong threads (Or the right ones)................ I've missed the sh!t fights,,,,, not too worried about that though....... What I have read has been positive, so I'm glad to report there's still plenty of good folk out there.
Cheers and keep smiling.

Camping I like camping hope my posts have not been involved in any of that. Now back to that camping I would like to still be doing some of that but after a trip up the high country today gosh Vic has got cold fast this year what happened to Autumn? So back to more camping I hope so and today we did the other sort of chill out (brrr) but love sitting in camp chair by the river.

6 days to go... all welcome...

Agreed, during the past 12 months or so. We are all still recovering from the western desert experience, and still gun shy of new members!
I can't get a word in these days :)
Although that's hard to agree with, yep, I think you're right. Are you sure your new job hasn't had something to do with that?
Biggest problem when Forums get too large, too many personalities, especially keyboard ones, and that is when the good ones leave.
Yep, forum churn. It's happened here before, and will happen again. Stay with us folks. Believe me, on an overall basis, we are pretty accommodating.
I work by the what's said on thread stays on thread basis. You mite disagree with what someone says on one thread, and then endorse them whole heartedly on the next (agreed dazzler?).
Life is too short.

I don't understand how people change & become more argumentative. There is definitely a more " combative" feel to some posts. Is it that individuals get comfortable on the forum? Is it that they are frustrated with the content or the topics? It definitely feels that the camper/camping side has taken a backward step & the more "general" topics are now more prevalent.

Opinions are like bums. Everyone has one.
I don't think there is any problem with people expressing their opinion, just because it might differ from yours doesn't mean theirs is wrong it's just different. It's when people start getting personal and attacking other members is when it all breaks down. Maybe people need to chill out get up from the keyboard and have a walk before coming back and re-reading what thy have typed before they hit the send button.
That's my opinion ;D

From memory I posted this link or a similar one a few months back in response to a similar thread.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_disinhibition_effect could be worth a read so that people understand the motivation of others. It's not always as bad as it may come across.
Welcome to the new age of social interaction. We're all part of it and this thread is a great example of forum self regulation.
I've met some fantastic people through this forum both locally and interstate, because no matter what the topic specific or general, underlying them all we all share a similar interest or passion.

IMO, you have hit the nail on the head pal. Precisely why some that were great members here felt the need to start something else 12 months to 2 years ago.
Bigger forum numbers create a changing dynamic. Some like to only talk camping and trip talk, others don't mind the general discussion stuff. It's hard to please everyone. I guess I for one get really crapped of when you read a thousand and one posts prior trip, and then, when the event has occurred, like the last (delete event) you only get to read half a dozen trip reports. In the early days of my myswag reading, where you went and what you did was the real reason People signed up and got involved. Lately, I have been going elsewhere for that type of information from blogspots. People just don't seem to have the time to post up what they have done and where they have been.
That said, I am a myswagaholic, and my name is Al.

Fair points Mace & I agree with your comments. I probably am guilty of not adding the time to trip reports after an event!! Will attempt to improve this.

Like wise me as well, just comes down to time, I have been updating my cruiser thread with pics of where we have been, but haven't been contributing or writing trip reports. Must pull the finger out also.

Must admit as a relative newby, following for the last 12 months, joining recently, have noticed a tad more adversarial approach to some posts.
I think emotion is good though, but must always consider how that may be interpreted by others...... If you do not care about others then maybe this forum is not for you (the feeling I got that kept me engaged in this forum in the beginning)..... Just my observation......

Its easy to turn off which is what I do. Enuf crap at work, don't need to listen to more on a great forum.

Maybe there is a computer virus infecting the forum... it used to be just a problem in the Electrical Section LOL ;D ;D ;D ;D

If you were ever in a 4wd club then you know about politics/cliques etc. Myswag is no different, except instead of meeting at a venue once a month we're online all the time...

Biggest problem when clubs and Forums get too large, too many personalities some try to force there style on everyone, having been a member of many clubs of which I now belong to none that is the good ones etc leave. just my thoughts,
just enjoy pete

I must admit that I have been responsible for a retort or 2 after being provoked by a comment etc....nothing over the top, but all same it puts an awkward feel to a thread/post.
I think in the main everybody on Myswag try's to contribute in a positive manner....well from what ive seen anyway.....there are times when individuals should think about what there about to submit before they do....this should help quell the emotional responses.
That said though I don't think there is to much wrong with a bit of robust discussion so long as doesn't get nasty or personal....!!!
Anyway have a good day, im off to bed before my last dog watch shift....chow...!!!!

agree..........but there would be things I might say face to face that we're not allowed to on here being a family forum.
Another point to note, not everyone can go camping every week or for a month, so to a point this forum is like our next best option, where we get to sit in our loungeroom and talk to each other around our internet virtual campfire.

Would we have robust discussions around a real campfire about politics, religion, electrical wiring and imported camper trailers? I believe the answer is yes! I don't expect anyone to like nor agree with anything thing I said or posted. You can however decide to reply on the forum or in a PM as a one on one.
speewa gives me feedback all the time on my posts, but I can never understand what He's saying, so I just take it as a compliment:-)

My thoughts
When you speak face to face with somebody there is a lot more happening than just words like those typed on a forum. You see their body language, get a pretty good handle on their demeanour and feelings and can gauge what their reaction might be to a comment. You see their body language when they listen and can modify your responses accordingly. Likewise, they can see how the comment was delivered e.g. smiling face, relaxed stance, friendly tone of voice. Whereas in the written word, a jovial comment can be easily misinterpreted.

Well I have been one of the main protagonists of late and still not sure whether how I have posted has been right or wrong. I can't recall being personal except on one occasion when I thought it was warranted. This has mostly been in the mechanical section and I tend to stand my ground. I also have a degree of MD though luckily my Manic stages are far more frequent than and Dep ones that are never bad. But I can get carried away.
I am being serious here and will take your advice. I am a big boy and am happy to be taken to task on it. What exactly do you want in the technical sections?. If someone is posting poor advice as a group do we argue this out or accept others opinions even if they are wrong?
Say Bob asked a question in electrical about running 12v wiring to the rear of his trailer. Mary comes on and says run speaker wire to the rear and then someone who knows what they are talking about, lets call her Simone, knowingly advises the correct size. Mary continues to advocate speaker wires because they work for her. Bob, who knows nothing, now has two options. Believe Mary or Simone.
Does Simone argue this out or not? She knows she is right and that if Bob follows Mary's advice he is going to waste money and come out with a dangerous or poor system. What do we expect?
Is it okay to have an argument or not?
Do people get upset when they see arguing over these things?
Do people personalise arguments they are not involved in?
Would it be worth moderators simply putting up a yellow card in a thread if it gets out of control?
Should import trailer discussions be banned like politics and religion?
Fire away.
And happy mothers day. :D
-
Yep agree with you both scarps and kb.
Dazzler,
If I was Simone, mind you a bloody ugly one, but I would just leave it. Sooner or later it will be found that Mary was wrong anyway. Hopefully bob does his research and he would get more opinions that would back up Simone anyway, then he can decide.
Then there are the other things that, there may not be a right or wrong, just different.
Anyway this thread is doing my head in. Let's go camping lol

I'm with Barrabarts early response and Mace too on this, I admit to picking and choosing what I read and haven't got time to check every discussion so I seem to have missed "the vibe of the thing".
I still reckon this particular forum is streets ahead of ANY other. The positive attitude greatly outweighs the negative ones.
Keep on keeping on ;D
Wish I was out bush, wish I had my damned camper ready, wish I had some time .......................AH HA - right now I do - off to the shed for the arvo.

I'm new to the forum but have noticed already a few regular members with big opinions. But that's all good, i'm still learning a lot from everyone here and can't wait to get out there camping!

bring em all up, never had a birth at a camp gathering:-). Rest assured, we could probably convince you that we're all experienced midwifes as well as 12v autoelecs:-) Nah seriously, family always comes first. Hope it all goes well.
-
Nothing wrong with having an opinion, I like others will put their opinion forward if they feel they want or need to. Same with life experience, we all come from different backgrounds. No need to attack each other for that. We all have our own ideas and knowledge.
Not everyone agrees with each other, just forward you opinion and leave it at that. Opinion on the subject, not the person.

As a relative newbie still looking for a camper I have found the forum excellent and members really helpful. I guess I don't view all forum categories yet as I don't have a camper and perhaps have missed some of the more heated moments. While everyone is entitled to an opinion it can be aired in a way that doesn't impact personally on others. So far I have really enjoyed my time here.

must be the season, Kiwi (eatmydirt) is due in 1 week..
Agree, start em early, get them used to camping ;)

So how many weeks for number four? Life is very relaxed with four.....

I think I've got it, we're arguing about arguing and discussing arguing and differences of opinion, but agree to disagree as long as we don't argue, which is arguably wrong or right or write or not, and if not maybe, possibly. Glad we got that sorted ... and imported, making sure not to mention three letter imports and their cohorts, did someone say electricity, twelve volt and all ?

Camping & Chilling last weekend, Gordon Country.
Gordon Country is a truly epic spot, would like to get back there sometime soon.
Here's a pic of our last impromptu camping trip to coolmunda dam in our Imported Chinese camper. Woke up and the wife said "we've got 6 days before you fly back to work. lets go camping" By 2:00pm camper was setup at the campsite with cool refreshments in hand. Great feeling getting out and about and just chilling out...
Oooops I mentioned the "I" word and the "C" word. now to watch this thread fall in a big pile of **** :cup:

Wondering what brand the boat and motor is?
-
And the camera that took the photo :D :D
KB

boat is a 1987 Clark 10 foota - so at that age I'm guessing Aussie?
motor is a 2004 6hp Johnson - owned by Bombardier, so Canadian?
and pic was taken on an iPhail - undoubtedly Asian
is it just me or do all of these smilies look of Asian appearance? better get some aussie owned and manufactured ones before the forum implodes on itself
