hi all,
i am investigating the purchase of a snow peak fire pit and was wondering if anyone has any experience using them with camp ovens?
they seem a bit small for use with camp ovens, but would love to hear if anyone has used these firepits with them.
thanks,
shannon

Theres several threads on em

have already tried a search, but couldn't find any info about using a normal camp oven in a snow peak fire pit...
may not be searching correctly, but tried a few different search terms...
i see some people using things like the hillbilly stands, but am curious if anyone puts the oven straight into the firepit...

One of the guys on here has one that I camp with regularly. I have sat around his a few times. They are a great thing and are well designed and pack nice and flat.
They BBQ on it a lot and the grill is great as it easily adjusts to different hights making it easy to control the temperature.
I haven't seen them use it with a camp oven. I think you could get enough coals in it to successfully cook in one. One consideration is that they taper down at the bottom so you would need a suitably sized oven and may need to use heat beads on the top.
I recently considered this as a camping option however decided to get the Ozpig instead, mainly because most places that allow the use of a fire like the Snow Peak (free camping CP's with fire pits) I could just have an open fire on the ground and cook my camp ovens on it.
A lot of caravan parks and places that don't allow open fires like the Snow Peak, have been allowing the use of contained fires like the Ozpig.
Also to me the Oz pig seemed more versatile with a lot more cooking options and once packed up it really isn't that bulky.
I have a couple of recent threads on the Myswag face book site with lots of comments from swaggers on both from when I was after advice between the two. I have also posted up some shots of it use. If you can get access to a FB account read through what the swaggers had to say.
Regards
Jas

thanks for the advice, jason...
how do you find carrying the ozpig in the trailer? does it take up a lot of space?
seems like it would be a bit awkward...

We have one of those fire pits, however we haven't used a camp oven on it. Due to the taper, there is a mesh to provide a flat surface for charcoal / heat beads etc, so it would be possible to use a camp oven.

The square mesh is in the top right of the above pic. Everything packs flat into the canvas bag making it quite space efficient. In the last few weeks, since the weather has become cooler, we use the pit at home quite a bit; both for some ambiance, grilling on the mesh, and of course marshmallows for the kids.

Why not make your own, and yes you can use a camp oven on it :cup:

I also have the large one and love it, although I don't use a camp oven. But I would think it would be possible.
Maybe your best bet, would be to give Luke at Drifta a call and ask him.

Gday Paceman
Used our Snow Peak on the weekend (at a beach very near you ;D). We have a southern metal spinners Aussie camp oven that we put on top of the grate. Inside I have an oven thermometer and adjust the height of the grate to get the right temp. Throw in a dozen or so heat beads in the fire and when white I throw them on top. On the weekend we had pizzas and hot damper with golden syrup for dessert. mmmmmm . If I can figure out how to up load photos I'll put some up tonight for you. I must admit I am not totally up with what you can use where as far as fires go, and would never take this where it would cause an issue. At least the snow peak is is not on the ground and in fact the stainless legs and the black floor plate that you put underneath are not hot to touch. When you pack it away you wouldn't even know there was a fire there, unlike the people up from us who had a bonfire going!!!!
Cheers

I haven't gone away with it yet mate. However the Ozpig comes in quite a small box, with all the chimney and legs going inside the barrel. My intention is to use the foam that came in the factory box, and to build a ply wood box to suit. With a sturdy box and the foam to stop it rattling around is would take the same or less space than one of those portable toilets.
In time I will probably get a snow peak as well so that I have the best of both words to choose from.

Like Jason we have the ozpig it has been on a few trips and the campoven is good on it. We store ours in one the canvas oztrail bags that are for the portable toilets with an old oven tray in the bottom to stop it going through. The campoven is in oztrail campoven bag and both go in the toolbox on the trailer. I cannot help with the snow peak sorry did look at them before we got the ozpig just liked that it could be closed up, both have good things about them.

We use the Hillbilly firepit which packs away fairly small, the legs are removable and the lid fits inside the firepit so that it is pretty compact. There is also a stand which fits inside the firepit and you can stand your camp oven on it. We've also in invested in the cookstand so that we can swing a billy and pots in over the fire.

We have both an ozpig and a Snow Peak fire pit and grill.
I have not cooked a camp oven on the snow peak yet but it could be done no worries.
Next time I give it a run I plan to cook a roast camp oven on it
There is a few of things that really impress me about the snow peak.
(1) It packs down to bugga all and is easily stashed away in the camper.
(2) Having the fire up off the ground it seems to chuck out more heat for the amount of wood used compared to to having a fire on the ground.
(3) Made from stainless steel it's gunna last me a life time.
The Ozpig has been pretty good. I have probably used it home more for cooking on than I have camping.
We find it a pain in the arse to store in the camper, this was not so bad when we had a dual cab.
The pig is not as good for sitting around, drinking beer and roasting marshmellows.
And although we kept ours out of the weather, they can start looking fairly rusty if not looked after.
A mates ozpig is looking rather 2nd hand after a short stint out in the weather.
I will probably sell the Ozpig off if anyone's interested.

We have the snow peak fire put and a spun steel camp oven - works a treat with the heat beads and a leg of lamb!

As promised some piccies . Fingers crossed this will work. This is the large Snow Peak with the large 12 " Aussie Camp Oven. The damper I made on saturday night was better than the oven at home! Top was crunchy inside moist and base perfect. Sorry the base pic is a bit blurred but it was hot!!! Last pic oven in action.
