Title: Do you cook by the Fire or in the Camper
Post by: McGirr on May 04, 2014, 05:54:34 PM

With campers now set up with fancy kitchens do you still cook on an open fire or prefer the camper kitchen when camping.

I understand if you have been traveling all day then it's simple to cook in the camper kitchen but is it a dying art cooking by fire.

Interesting to hear people's thoughts.

We cook by the fire when we free camp, and use the BBQ and kitchen in the Penguin when we are in a caravan park. Not many caravan parks allow fires, unfortunately. We use a Hillbilly camping set up, and also use their instant hot water system. We're pretty new to free camping so we're still learning our campfire cooking skills  :D

In our previous campers we had kitchens but we only used the gas to heat water, we cooked on a BBQ outside.

When the opportunity is there always on the fire.

Easter weekend I did roast beef, veges, damper, bacon, eggs, jaffles, pancakes ( all at different times) to feed 6 adults and 4 kids. Marshmallows and s'mores for desserts.

It always tastes better when you smell of smoke, have carefully created the coals and you just turn the cast iron cookware upside down burn it out give it an oil and you are ready to go again. Got to love no washing up!!!

When available, will have a fire but generally only use it for hot water and marshmallows.  Use the Weber and gas stove in the Drifta for cooking.

Likewise KB, no fire we cook in the Weber and 2 ring gas burner and utilise the Drifta kitchen in the Customline ORD.

It depends on what we are cooking, but as a rule meat is generally cooked on the fire. Other fancy stuff like rice, the wife does in the camper...

Fire as much as possible for me. Almost always cook dinner on the fire and breakfast is probably 50/50 especially if I'm packing up to depart that morning.
Very rarely use caravan parks but if I do I will usually eat evening meals at the local rubbity dub  ;D

If fires are allowed we plan a few bigger meals on the fire but not every night coz, like laf, I like a good fire base. I find it takes a while so we don't do it every night coz it we pack some of our days pretty full when we camp and it puts dinner too late. Plus it means less time for drinkies!

Cheers.

I like to cook on the fire when I can and if I can't then I use a gas cooker or gas BBQ outside.

The inside kitchen is used to make a cup of tea in the morning, before getting the fire going.

The dying art is the ability to have a fire, at least where I like to camp. So many places now don't allow open fires. A smoke infused roast is one of camping's true advantages to regulation restaurant prepared meals.

We only camp were you can have a fire. The only thing that limits us us a TFB.  Campings not camping without the fire.  ;D

I try and only camp in places where you can have a fire.......  mainly because I enjoy stuffing about in general with the fire, cooking in the camp ovens, cooking on the BBQ plate etc, though as others have said, the CT kitchen still gets a run when required, for convenience etc.

Good to have options.

We cook using the WeberQ 90% of the time.
Whenener possible we light a fire generally for just sitting around drinking beer and cooking marshmellows.
Up until recently we would take a Ozpig away with us,I found it a PITA to pack into the camper.
Purchased a Snow Peak fire pit and grill and reckon it's the ducks nuts for camping. The fire draws exceptionally well and chucks out awesome heat. Let the fire burn down to coles and it's great for cooking on. It uses bugga all wood winch is a bonus.

I'm afraid it's time for the ozpig to go to market  ;D

Mostly on a gas cooker on a table but a little away from the camper.
Fires mostly used for sitting around and boiling water - oh and toasting marshmellows, of course.

Hi,
fire is first choice for grilling meat or heating water in a 10L billy.
Gas stove for cooking vegies or any thing in saucepans.

When travelling we will often have a small fire around lunch time (much easier to find wood away from regular camp sites), grill a bit of meat, then put on the billy for a shower after lunch. (especially if the evenings are getting chilly)

Coffee/tea is usually on gas, even if the fire is alight.

cheers

Yep pretty much the same here too. I use the little butane stove for quick stops when doing a swag trip but usually cook on the fire in the evening

if i go up the river, cook on the fire where plenty of wood, other wise when going coastal and i have to bring my own wood, i use a choofer at night to save on consumption and use my Beefeater Bugg to cook on. I do everything from breakfast to toasties to bbqs or roast in the Bugg. That being said, i cooked every meal on the fire when we went away over Easter Anzac. I use camp oven mainly, but i did buy a new fire grill on folding legs and the Mrs was in awe of the smokey, seasoned lloin chops i did on fire last trip... mmmm... crisps the fat up nicely too
