Title: Teaching while travelling anybody doing it?
Post by: rossbarb on May 04, 2014, 12:37:01 PM
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if there is any teachers out there that are semi- retired or just travelling and working as a teacher, if so do you find any work. We are thinking about travelling and me picking up some work as we will need to supplement our income and I would really like to continue teaching as I still have a passion for teaching. I have a special interest in literacy and numeracy teaching I love helping students to learn to read.

You'd have to register with every state you were planning to visit first I believe?

Not "rough red" but "blended".  He needs the coke and lemon to mask the taste :D :D :D

<<<<< as it says "Happiness is a single malt"

Sorry for the hijack Barb but never miss an opportunity to have a dig at young Bruce  :D

Myself and my wife lived and taught in Halls Creek for two years. There were numerous teachers that came through did a few casual days topped up the account and moved on. Quite often schools were aware of where the need for teachers was and pointed travellers in the right direction. I would recommend calling ahead and speaking to the Principal of the school, discussing what you have to offer and quite often they can organise days for you to work as casual staff can be very hard to come across in the more remote locations. WWC and state based registrations can be fastracked if they need you. If your not in a rush a term might be up for grabs as it can be a tough gig and staff can be quite transient. If there is no work on offer you can just be a tourist and enjoy it.

We loved it, two years living in the Kimberley, lots of local knowledge, lots of places were visited that many people would never know about.

Enjoy we had a great time and are following in your footsteps with the kids this time in about  two years.

Many schools in Qld work through the TRACER agency. You can find them with a Google search. If you contact them, they will tell you what's required here.

Make sure you find a school near the beach so Ross can spend his days driving up and down the beach

I suspect you'd have better luck talking to the local schools directly in the smaller towns.  My wife is a relief teacher and knows from experience that the schools only use Tracer when their listed of trusted casuals is exhausted.  Tracer works ok in Brisbane, but at least half of her bookings are repeat business from schools who know her and call her directly.

A masters is the minimum standard to teach in Qld Barb. You might have to head straight for the territory ;D
