Title: Food supplies - Northern Territory
Post by: Jaysea on April 26, 2014, 08:48:47 PM
Im in the last stages of planning a trip throughout the red centre and starting to think about food supplies.  Can anyone confirm the most suitable (not having to sell my left kidney) and appropriate supplies (more than 2 cans baked beans) at the following places

1. Kakadu. Is Jabiru best?
2. West McDonald ranges through loop to Uluru?
3. Savannah way between mataranka and mt Isa?

Thanks

There is a supermarket of sorts in Mataranka as I remember and I don't think Savannah Way goes to Mount Isa. We drove from Broome to Cairns several years ago and As I remember it we did a shop in Kununara which kept us going all the way to Cairns. Mt Isa has plenty of supermarkets. Jabiru has a very nice bakery and I think there were a couple supermarkets as well. Suggest long life milk if you use it. We are not big on making fancy meals. We tend to eat simple and eat basic foods. We had frozen cryovac meat. More than two nights at one spot and we would break out the meat. Likewise with Uluru, buy at Alice. Hope this helps.

In relation to the Centre - definitely stock up in Alice Springs..... everywhere else the cost of the items also has to help cover the cost of the stores truck which delivers the goods to outback stations ( it is an exorbitant cost which just cannot be passed on) so expect to pay hefty prices....  Bring any drinks you may want as well for both the reason above and also alcohol sales regulations pertaining to bona fide travellers.  I think the grog shops in Alice can only sell after 2 pm during the week so make sure you factor that in to your stocking up plans.
Cheers,

Thanks Wayne and Sue.  Appreciate the info.  With three kids in tow it is a balance between carting lots of food and topping up along the way.

Just clarifying our trip along the savannah way we area heading across from Darwin to Lawn hill national Park then heading south through mt Isa back through Central Queensland to nsw.

Any other comments welcome.

Enjoy your trip, we paid $4 for an icy pole(50 cents normally) on the GRR. You will love Lawn Hill although we didn't stay as we were running out of time.
Cheers

One of the best butcher shops I have ever been to is in Alice Springs, Milner Meat Supplies, 28 Gason Street.  They have everything, including seafood.  And they are happy to cryovac.  Kevin
