Title: Teerwah Beach to Inskip
Post by: wartim on April 13, 2014, 09:53:39 PM
Hi all,

Heading to Fraser with the family for a few days on 24/04/14  travelling from Toowoomba and staying at Eurong.  Was thinking of heading out on the Burnett Hwy through Nanango and Gommeri, then the Wide Bay Hwy through Kilkivan and onto Gympie, then Rainbow and Inskip, is supposed to be shorter distance and hopefully quicker than the Bruce Hwy to Gympie.

Low tide is at 10.30am for the trip up and 12.30pm on the way back so was thinking of maybe going down the beach from Rainbow and over to Teerwah Beach on the way back.  I have never driven Mudlo Rocks so can anyone provide advice if the Mudlo Rocks are passable in a DMax 2 hours either side of the tide as don't want to become a member of the Mudlow Rock toll.

I realise conditions could change between now and the 24th with the remnants of cyclone Ita possibly impacting the area.

Been 20 years since I have been to Fraser, any suggestions on must see and do's would be appreciated.

Cheers

Wartim

They should be fine within the last couple of hours of the tide. Give yourself some grunt pulling up in the the cutting to DI, though the rain should have settled it a bit. Easy drive atm.

Use the beach cam at Rainbow for live updates on conditions there at the rocks .. just dismiss the pop up window ..

We have travelled that way a few times in the past. It's a never ending drive. We ended up travelling from Hampton to Esk, Kilcoy, Peachester, then up the Bruce Hwy. Was a much better run.

Coming home along Teewah is a better drive, but you'll also require another vehicle permit. If this rain holds off, we'll be at Rainbow on the weekend. Can tell you exactly how the rocks are then.

Shane.

Rocks as at yesterday was easily passable 3 hours either side of low. However the storm swell and wind will change the beach. It's not too bad currently but the next 24 hours will tell.

Looks as though there could be a few more rocks to negotiate after tomorrow.

yeah the ranger stopped by yesterday about 4pm and dropped off a little note. It's not that bad here.
And looking at all the forecasts looks like its going to miss us now. and blow out to sea.

At the moment the beach along teewah has seen really "much" storm surge. I'm going for a drive probably late this avo or tomorrow and will have a look but yeah the surf is messy but not coming that far up the beach.

Thanks all for your replies so far lets keep intouch.

Footy Shorts Shane - So you reckon its a better drive up the Bruce than the Nanango, Gommeri way?  If you have come down by Teerwah Beach and back to Hampton how much longer does it take than along the highway from Inskip to Hampton, not that I am in a hurray its just good to know what to allow?

Cheers

Tomorrow might tell a different story, crazy winds here at over 100km hr. We put the awning away and living inside. It's also high tide, and the surf is right up to the dunes, and this isn't the highest tide.

I'll post over the coming days the condition of the beach but betting there will be some mess.

Google maps says it is slightly quicker via Brisbane then north to Gympie and onto Rainbow.  But only 5-10mins  versus either nanango-goomeri-gympie or esk-kilcoy-beerwah.

Pick whichever suits you.

On a recent trip I found the exposed dead trees and stumps south of the rocks to be more of an issue. As said 1 decent storm can change anything. Maybe plan to go back that way only? Then its only a few 100 m back to rainbow and bitumen. But if coming from south then its a fair hike from the rocks back over DI Pt and down the beach to the Freshwater track. My 2c.Good luck with your choice and holiday.

There's not a huge amount of difference in time between Nanango etc to the Bruce. 20 mins or so. The hwy is a better drive IMO.
We came back once from Fraser via Teewah, Somerset, Wivenhoe, Toogoolawah, The Bluff. Great drive. 1000 times better than Rainbow and TCB roads, but 6+ hours.......

I wouldn't go anywhere near the Warrigo and Gateway the day before a long weekend.

After last nights weather, the bay on the northern side of DI might be a problem with sticks. You may not even get to Teewah.

Shane.

Can't speak for the highway part if it. But will be doing the teewah to rainbow part on Friday...
Normally the trees just on the northern side of the point are more of a pain than the rocks.
We will see on Friday.. If it's bad, we will just backtrack to freshwater track.

I was thinking of coming back from Fraser via Teerwah beach to Tewantin then down the Bruce and turn off to Beerwah, Kilkoy, Esk and Toowoomba.  If the Rainbow side is no good I dont loose much and can just head back home through Gympie.

Cheers

If the tide is right, you should be fine. The 2 obstacles will be the rocks at Rainbow and the sticks at DI. At worst you turn around and go back through Rainbow and add 45 mins to your trip.

We'll be there in a couple of days. Will report back.

Hi guys.
So the beach is now better.. Tides been up but flattened it and minimal soft stuff.
I suppose there's lots of cars heading this way, but we drove double island down to teewah didn't go to rainbow and we did it 3 hours side of high and it was easy hard driving.

Winds are receding and going NNW to NW but swell is going to pick up through Saturday and Sunday but not too big. Should be an easy run.

Could be a good weekend. Good banks at first cutting for surf and a few gutters............Just don't drive on Clliffs dune reclamation down south from the cutting or he will threaten to fill your car up with sand.......

DI side will be favourable to visit.

Maybe up there as well so will strap on the new myswag plates and go visiting.

forgot when you said you're going.... But one more obstacle if coming home after long weekend periods is the line up at the ferry to get back over the river, it can take quite a while in the long que.

We'll be at Inskip. Left it too long to organise boarding for the hounds, so they'll be with us, which rules out Teewah out for us. Following weekend possibly

We should be at anchor just off Inskip in Pelican Bay on Friday, but heading to the Moonbooms Sat.
You should swim over and say hello.  :D

Is that why you invented 'fart-away'? So you could share the delightful aromas of tin can bay with the rest of the myswag community, and the world?

How long did you have to wait for the barge?

I imagine it will probably be just as bad on Sunday 27th as a lot of people seem to have taken this whole week off?

Any idea how long it takes to drive from Rainbow to the ferry at Terwantin when the tides are good?

Hi wartim

It's takes about 40 minutes from Rainbow to the Tewantin Ferry.  Don't forget you will need a vehicle permit to drive the beach and the ferry costs $7 for a car and then $7 for a camper trailer.

It's smooth running at the moment.  Make sure you go around the rocks 2 hours either side of low tide at Rainbow.  Otherwise add another 30 minutes to go through Freshwater track at high tide.

We didn't come home that way. Just spent 5 days up at Rainbow and shot down to DI to see if it was passable. I'd assume the wait would have been enormous. Teewah was at capacity apparently.

With regard to driving through Wide Bay and Burnett Hwy, a couple of kids that were with us went home that way. From Inskip Point to Glenhaven, (15 mins north of Crows Nest), 3 hours 45 mins. Add another hour to Twba.

I hope the police booked people speeding on the beach over Easter! Seems camping zones mean increase your speed by 50 not limit it to 50! No one obeys the signs so we are forced to keep the kids closer to camp, I don't understand the need to go so fast, I like to sit on 50 the whole way and enjoy the fact we are allowed to drive there! Might need to bring a bobcat and install some speed bumps next time!
