Title: Chainsaw box using space case. Job Finished.
Post by: achjimmy on April 12, 2014, 07:24:31 PM
All

thanks to a lcool member I picked up a cheap space case to suit the chainsaw. Below is the layout, wondering what the thoughts are on what I have got. I wanted a space case cause it will either live on the roof of inside and I detest fumes.

The silver can is for the premix. Figured i would carry the fuel unmixed as I can then use it in the gen, plus the rate I get away it will be fresher.

Typically I carry the saw full of fuel/bar oil and another 2 full Primus 1L fuel bottles, 1 premix and 1 bar oil. I haven't yet run out of fuel/oil on a trip, however if it is an early in the year trip after tracks are open, I'll carry spare unmixed fuel and 2-stroke blend just in case. As for other bits, tools for the saw, hand file/guide, stump vice, PPE, spare chain and bar, hard bristle brush, rag. The saw will leak bar oil so put a towel down in the case before you put the saw in.

I have run space cases in cars for work a fair bit.
We now run custom aluminium boxes as we found space cases take up a lot of room compared to the size of its contents and the top needs a gap to open. Anyway, they are good to seal and secure the gear away from the vehicles occupants and remarkably strong.

With your layout, Just watch the dogs on the saw don't rub on the fuel container and you could put a piece of carpet on the bottom to soak up leaking oil.

For my own saw in my personal car at home, I just run two msa fuel bottles ( one for oil, one for fuel), they don't leak, don't take up much room and I get about two tanks out of it, which is fine for four wheel driving and ad hoc use.

Thanks guys.

I intend to put a couple of dividers in to keep things in place maybe even a strap. The carpet is a great idea.

Jamie is this stump vice adequate?  http://www.stihl.com.au/STIHL-Products/Accessories/Chainsaw-Accessories/21089-1649/Stump-Vice.aspx (http://www.stihl.com.au/STIHL-Products/Accessories/Chainsaw-Accessories/21089-1649/Stump-Vice.aspx)

It's a mini boss and it is only used for the 4wd. I have a larger Husky for home.

I also carry a long small flat screwdriver for the bar oil adjuster and a bar tool, oops forgot about the wedges and Fiskars splitter, grease gun.

I also thought the space cases would take up too much room, so custom made this one out of some recycled rainforest packing case timber for my MS180 with longer bar. Bit hard to see, but there are dividers screwed in where the 4l fuel container and bits pieces are.

I can padlock it shut if needed to be carried on the roofrack or CT toolbox rack, but it mostly slides into the rear cargo area.

I also installed chain and rubber hose handles on the side if I need to padlock to the rack (or speewas chair).

My son bought himself a Farmboss (what a machine that is), but we decided a custom made box would be too big and heavy, so He just uses the Stihl carry bag and fills the fuel and oil tank up before He leaves home, so He doesn't have to carry the other bits for a day or weekend trip.

Great effort,

Eco friendly too.
Recycled carbon should help with the carbon credits scheme, and Bob Brown would give it his C Tick.

Seriously, great stuff

Like your solution scarps.
The issue with the Stihl case for example is that it's an unusual size and you can pack more in in a square box like you have.
Cheers

Here is my chainsaw carry case. It's a SuperCheap Auto box and carries all of my supplies for the bigger saw as well.

Last pic shows everything in the box except the chaps. Pre-mixed fuel, bar oil, 2 x wedges, stump vice, 2 x tool kits (files etc), ear muffs, safety glasses, survey paint, saw and bar.

Off to Bunnings now...

All done

Still gotta get a stump vice, new file and some gloves. But there is space left for them. Pretty happy with the result using a bit of plywood and some carpet. The foam blocks hold it snug. So far worked perfect, it was in the car all day and not a wiff of fuel till I opened it.

Cost

Space case $100
Foam nicks
200mm of the end of a bit of plywood I had $10
Carpet nicks
Screws $3

I don't have space for all that, not sure how you all do either. Also in some Nat parks you must take the bar off the saw. I fit all I need in a milk create. Been like that for ever and works well. You do have to ask yourselves, how often are you chopping down trees or clearing roads as well, the destination will make a big difference - worth thinking about.

Easy to have room Steve, I've gone from a Paj to the Cruza and one kids joined the Army  ;D

As I mentioned I can't stand the petrol fumes. In total volume it's not that much bigger than a milk crate, longer yes but only 380 x 380 which is about the same or slightly bigger. I just didn't want to be mucking around with bars on and off, I will worry about that if and when I go to the possible NPs.

Do they do the same thing as the chaps, Jim?

I've never used chaps with a chainsaw before. But that's probably because I've never properly learnt how to wield a chainsaw (which is a discussion for another thread). I assume that nothing will stop a chainsaw taking your leg off if it wants to - do the chaps just protect you from flying wood chips, branches, etc?

My experience has always been "grab chainsaw and safety glasses, and you're good to go". But then again, I grew up with a grandfather who would tie the chainsaw to his waist with a bit of old rope, so *when* he dropped it he didn't need to keep climbing back down the tree to retrieve it. Always happy to learn how things should be done.

Cheers,
Matto :)

Chaps are designed to clog and jam the saw so it stops, very effective too.

Don't try this at home...

That video is very impressive.

So basically they can't guarantee that you won't get cut, but even if you do you can count on a significantly better outcome than if you weren't wearing them. But in that example, with a full-speed, high-powered saw, the chain still wasn't able to punch all the way through before getting stopped.

Consider me converted. I might need to get a pair when I get a chainsaw. $150 is a small price to pay, if it keeps a leg attached.

Thanks D4D - you learn something every day.

Matto :)

Make sure you get a set that wraps completely around the leg, like the link I posted. Some just have a front, which leaves rear lower leg exposed.

An lcool user had them. But notice local Bunnings has the same size for $150. It won't fit anything bigger than a miniboss though.

We have around 20 saws and we only keep the ones in our trucks fueled and oiled. Those on our spares shelf get drained of fuel, it prevents gumming up of the fuel delivery system. We keep them oiled regardless. When we need them they have to work, any issues off for a service for some tuning.

Manufacturers seem to change there advice from time to time.

Best advice is check your manual, it should tell you either way.

The saw will leak bar oil so put a towel down in the case before you put the saw in.

Hi mate

Yes your right it depends on the time of year, wind etc, one trip last year we copped 8 trees across the tracks in about 10kms of low 4wdriving, last one was the biggest and used the fuel, lucky there were no more downed trees as we would have had to back if we couldn't go around , depends also if your in areas that doesn't see a higher flow of traffic.

Yup, never use a saw on a ladder or over your shoulders and undercut the branch so it drops straight down.

Which one did you get Jimmy?

I've just picked up the Ryobi pole saw, because it goes with all the other ONE+ gear I have. I've only just had a quick play with it (you know, to make sure I didn't get sold a dud 8) ), but so far I'm very impressed. Certainly easier than climbing a tree, or using a manual pole saw (I'm rather lazy).

Currently being tempted by the $99 Masters chainsaw still...

I got similar to this one, got motor chainsaw head. Hedger head and 4 poles for $95 wanted it for one tree done about 6 so far and all good. Typical Chinese quality but if your patient, careful and tighten a few things up its great.

That's great buying - all that for $95.

I know appearances aren't everything, but that motor and control section look absolutely identical to my Echo weedeater.

D4D - can you angle that chainsaw head at all? Is the combi system a solid shaft drive? Looks like a great way to get a bunch of tools at an incremental investment.

Stihl combi would be my choice but I wanted to prove to my self that the hedger is any good . The agr did that as well as providing a pole saw and 4 extensions  Going forward my next tool is likely to be a kombi but it is an investment even with the great special at the time the equivalent in a Stijl package was well over $1k and I only have a few more trees to do  and then the pole saw will be redundant

Nope you can't angle the head and I haven't had a need to. Yep it is a solid shaft drive. I sold my Honda brushcutter to speewa and replaced it with the Stihl. I've been adding tools as required. I have the brushcutter, hedge trimmer, pole saw and extension.

Anyone with the Sthil hard case had the handle just pull out??? Mine did long ago, and had to use it on weekend and realised what a awkward bitch it is to move without a handle... Also talkin to couple of mates, theirs have too :(

So looking for a better solution - something like the Husky box where you can store the oils, files, tools and everything all in 1... Be interested to see if the Sthil fits in there.

I have a stihl 026 and a stihl 180 both fit in this carry case (not at same time).
I find it a lot better to pack in the car as it is easy to store items on and around it.

I have the same square box, a black Echo version, works really well. It keeps all the saw gear (fluids, sharpening, cleaning, wedges) in one place.

You still need something else to carry your PPE, you do wear PPE don't you... :)

Yeah it's all good Bruce. The lid on the pre mix fuel can swelled and I had to replace it. It's done more miles than use . I reckon it's been a great decision. I came close to buying one of those e go saws at the masters clean up and moving on the mini boss but thought this hasn't failed me yet so why change?
