Title: Fiji holiday - Not camping related - My Swaggers will know - nice place to stay?
Post by: elkay on April 12, 2014, 12:14:50 PM
Hi All,
My nephew is getting married in July and they want to honeymoon in Fiji.  His dream is to go game fishing so we are booking a day charter for a present. They have been living together for 7 years and have three girls under 6.  She is 24 he is 30.
They want to stay in a resort type place where they can visit the market/shops etc so she can be amused with spa/massage/shopping while he is out on charter for the day.

It is bad time to go away, school holidays, does any one know a nice place to stay that will not be too crowded???
Cheers Lesley

No bad time to go, normally try to get over there about 4-5 times a year.

you will want to stay in denarau island. out of all the hotels the hilton is the best but tends to be the most expensive. sofitel is probably the next best. both are good for honeymoons.

now if they are going what is there budget. i can recommend a number of places and happen to know the managers of. maybe go and stay on one of the islands. just depends on budget.

dont book any fishing until you get there. you will get much much better rates then over the net. at the marina there is about 10 different game fishing options.

anytime of the year is good. my dive master still dives with wet suits in winter. but the water temp is 28deg.

feel free to pm me, and i can offer some suggestions, i have pics of most resorts that we stayed in

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, gives me a starting point for locations and activities to fill their time....having 3 girls under 6 I dont think they will spend much time indoors!  Not taking the girls of course, first time ever without them.

Appreciate your time and effort in replying.

I've had a few trips to fiji. Love it there.

Castaway island - proposal to wife.

Wyndine - time share with wife's relos. Free accommodation.

Treasure island - the queenies come in over the reefs during August around the island. Normally it's a marine reserve around the island but it's open during August. Do not submit your kids to the kids club here. The night they did face painting I think they used lead base enamel. Took two days to get off. Very average.

Radisson blu resort - excellent resort. Water slide for the kids. Great kids club.

If you book one of the guys on denarue they will usually pick you up off the beach at your resort.

I'd recommend the islands over the mainland.

Pay a bit more, but well worth it.

Castaway was good but that was a heap of years ago. I proposed to the good wife about twelve years ago. What's it like these days.

We were at treasure island about four years ago. It was looking a bit tired then but I think there were about to undergo a management change. This could only be good. Each trip we have had to Fiji we have met people and have kept in touch with afterwards. Even convinced one family they needed a CT . Have had a few trips .

On the flip side hated it as to have many if my friends. Stuck in a resort, no restaurants, shopping etc outside of the resort. Stuck in the resort for everything.

People in the resort were nice though.

Not as bad as Vanuatu though

Hi all,

Your suggestions and advice is brilliant.  Having taken a look at all the places suggested, I am thinkingn of a holiday myself.....
We are just waiting for them to get their passport applications in before booking, just making sure nothing goes wrong before booking.
They definitely want Nadi area so will be concentrating search there.
Now if it were I, I would be on one of those smaller islands which have about 12 people only on the island....... no phone no tv nothing but rest and relax.

Thanks again and will update on the final selection and outcome.
Cheers Lesley

One of the girls here at work got back from Fiji about 2 weeks ago. Wasn't impressed apparently. Stayed in a top hotel (she is not here to ask which one) but allegedly not as clean as one would expect. In the deal she got "kids eat free" however it only applied to one restaurant where an adult for the buffet was something like $80.00pp. There were a few other minor issues relating to activities and payment required where she said on Hamilton a comparative holiday was a similar price but more inclusions. Sorry not a first hand account but something to consider.

We love Fiji, our usual resort is the Shangri-La, massive grounds, an actual beach you can swim in, plenty of activities, most divine spa retreat, golf course etc.
We also spend time living in a village, not for everyone, but something my kids will never forget. The best way to learn a new culture is to fully immerse yourself in it :)

No matter where they chose, they need to go in with open minds and make the most of everything they can. If they can go on a village day tour, they will love meeting the locals and seeing the beautiful happy children.

Well still waiting for the nephew and his bride to be to get their passport applications in, they are cutting it fine I think.  Only 2 months to go to the wedding but now they have agreed to look at one of the islands of Fiji so that makes it a bit easier.
Thanks again for all your ideas.

We go every year and stay at The Naviti on the Coral Coast. Great for the kids, and its "all inclusive", including all meals and drinks (including beer, wine and spirits - the local stuff - its drinkable).

Be warned but, they had a fire there in late 2012 and lost most of the main restaurant buildings. We went in February this year, and everything that was offered pre-fire, is still offered, just in different areas. Also, they commence major renovations in August this year to rebuild and revamp.

We love Fiji, and can't wait to go back again.

Cheers
Grant

Bill, as in, "Volleyball Final" and "What are you doing?" Bill? If so, yeah, he's still there (or atleast he was in February). It's a great place, not 5 star by any means, but its comfortable.

"The Naviti" means "The Real Fiji".

Hi, Fiji is a great place to stay.
Port Denarau area has allot of resorts and has some nice attractions but close enough & far enough away from the hussle and bussle of Nadi.
We stay here.

Yep agree with the above, we've stayed at both the Shangri-La and the Warrick, would go back to either in a heart beat!

Cheers,
