Have been reading through the Weber Baby Q thread............think I'm sold. After battling with the Cob oven on camping trips, I'm a bit over it !!
Have seen one at Masters for $258.00........seemed like a good price. Has anyone got anyone prices or links ?? Thanks in advance.
PS.. Will have a Cob for sale soon.

We have a Ziggy (Ziegler and Brown - BBQ Galore version of a Weber) and although we are yet to use it camping, it is an awesome bit of kit. The advantage of this over a weber is that webers are made to be used with the lid closed, whereas this does both. Also, it has 2 burners (one each side) so you can control where and how the temperature is (i.e. burner on one side and slow roast on the other so it is indirect heat). We have found that it heats up very quickly, can use it open for traditional BBQ or closed for slow roast, pizzas, bread, etc. It has now replaced our 4 burner hooded BBQ in the backyard. Can't wait to take it camping with us next month.

They sound interesting. There is only 2 of us ....are these bigger than a Baby Q ?

Hi Hargs,
The price at Masters is the best I've seen. Planning on getting one myself, but prob use my flybuys points.

Don't be concerned about the lid up or down thing. A Weber BabyQ cooks the best steaks you will ever taste with the lid down. Only negatives you will hear about a Weber will come from the mouths of salesmen who don't sell them. A Webber owner will tell you the facts :D

Agree 100%

Thanks guys.........anyone want to buy a Cob oven ?

Put it in general classifieds. It will sell.

I'm not doubting you can cook a decent steak with the lid down, but Webers are designed to be used that way only.
Each to their own. You may find some interesting reading on the Aussie BBQ forum as to models and their benefits. For us the lid height was a major choice factor too. There is a difference in the Weber models you buy from big chain stores and the smaller specialist retailers - you could never cook a roast or bake in the chain store ones, there just isn't the same height inside.
From memory our Ziggy is more the size of the middle Q.

Only 2 cm height difference between Q models

Another vote for a Ziggy. Absolutely love ours. Before you buy a Weber go into BBQ galore and compare each alongside each other as they sell both.
-
but are Ziggy about twice the price of a Baby Q ? :'(
-
Wow it's only 2 cm cooking height difference. I thought there was more! Still 13cm is not much clearance if you are roasting a chook or leg of lamb. The thermostat is handy to have though for the sake of $10 or $20.

What's the cooking height of the Ziggy with the lid closed. Did a quick google but couldn't find that spec?

Extra height lid, thermostat and electronic ignition are the differences between a Weber dealer's model and one from a chain store like Rays or Masters
KB
-
Just measured it.
22cm from grill to highest point of lid, but practically it is more like 20cm internal height for the middle section (probably half the total grill area).
-
Would go weber q have family q at home and purchased baby q for camper both have thermostate best bbq I have owned cheers Mark
-
We cook roasts in our webber q all the time. No issues with size.
-
I've got the high lid baby Q and love it! Got it for camping, but it now also serves duty as the home BBQ too. Buying the accessories gets addictive and expensive too...
Cooked plenty of family roasts and probably only maybe 10% of those might have hit the lid on the standard model.
The Ziegler & Brown would be better compared to the Q220, due to size, weight and price.
The Z&B is a nice bit of kit and BBQ's Galore push it pretty hard as my old man found out when he looked at the Weber.
-
The Weber Q is a great bit of kit but if you want the best go a Beefeater Bugg... I will run & hide now >:D

I use the weber q with the lid up no problems, particularly if I am doing b&e or a piece of fish. No problems.

Yeah but geez they put some heat out! Can also cook lid up or down.

How dare you >:D
One thing that doesn't get a mention too much about the webberq's is that are EXTREMELY economical and hardly use any gas. I've been on a 9kg bottle for several months at home and that's using it a couple of times a week at least.

Hargs in all seriousness the weber will be fine, I bought the beefeater because I've had them as home bbqS and love them. I also liked the fact that they were a dual burner & I wanted to be different

Yes, thanks, as cost is a factor I think I'll be going for the Baby Q with the temp. gauge. Lighter and cheaper.

And the Weber came out on top of a recent Choice test with an overall score of 87%
The Ziegler & Brown Twin Grill scored 73% and the Beefeater BUGG scored 71%

nice to know.....

Go the Z&B. Love mine, it's just too big for only 2 adults.
Takes up 1/2 the back seat when we go away.
It's ok, I just leave the kids at home(or these days they drive themselves).
-
The biggest danger in buying a Q from a specialist dealer is that you will end up spending lots more on all the great accessories!
We wanted to get a new lid for ours (to change from low to high with thermometer): BBQs Galore don't sell them so they sent us across the carpark to the dealer store - we came away with the new lid AND a purpose made duffle bag to transport the Baby Q in! We already had the LED light that fits on the handle and turns on when you lift the lid, otherwise we'd have bought one of those as well!

Good luck, make sure you post up a trip report when you go to buy it 8) and of course the first cook up

We have the ziggy - absolutely LOVE it!!! Like having 2 burners, lots of options.
Looked at Beefeater Buggy one, but didn't like the controls around the back of the BBQ. We have this brand as our home BBQ and it's brilliant.
Weber is the popular one, and available at lots of places. Others mentioned above aren't as readily available.
Good luck with your choice, I am sure you will have many happy BBQs whatever you choose!!

3.1 kg lamb roast in a chain store Webber Baby Q

How much room do you need ?
-
That roast looks taller than 13cms (the internal height of the 200). How on earth did it fit? Looks very yummy though!
P.S the inside of your lid looks very clean. Ours needs a good scrub down.
As far as roasts, I've cooked whole chickens, leg of lamb and pork in ours and everything has come out amazing. If anything they have cooked a little too quickly for my liking as I've struggled to keep it lower than 160C with one burner on minimum without opening the lid.
I'm still mastering pizzas as the base gets cooked too quickly but so far raising the stone on some egg rings seems to be working. Maybe it is just my lack of BBQ skills.
I do have to admit that my hubby won our BBQ as a prize but BBQs galore would swap it for a babyQ if we wanted. When he told me he had won a "Ziegler and Brown" I didn't even know they existed! We took our chances with the lesser known Ziggy and haven't regretted it.

At the Caulfield caravan camping show there was someone selling solid plates for the baby Q for about $60 which replaced the grill.
It looked pretty good but we already have the premium hot plate which sits on top of the grill, (haven't had much success with it as yet)
Pretty sure it was this one

Double thickness alfoil on top of grill. Trivet on top of alfoil. Pizza stone on top of trivet. Perfect pizzas every time.

Never used a hot plate on the Weber. What do you cook on it?
KB

I'm not sure how the WeberQ is designed but our Ziggy says you must have at least half as open grill to allow air circulation. The guy in the shop and the instructions both clearly stated you should not use 2 solid half plates at the same time. Too much heat confined underneath. Might be with checking that it is safe to use a full solid plate.
We use the solid plate for onion, mushrooms, eggs, bacon. You could also use it for pancakes - anything that would fall through the grill.
-
Tried to cook pancakes, bacon and eggs. I don't think I heated it up enough and it all stuck. The plate covers 2/3 of the grill the small amount left over is too small to be useful

My dear old Mum got me Beefeater BBQ 6 years ago as a house warming gift. Admittedly I use it a lot but what a piece of #^&*.
I am on the 3rd trip tray. They are made of tin or something and disintegrate / rust in front your eyes.
The covers that go over the burners.... 3rd set. Same crap material that falls apart when you look at it.
The burners... on the 2nd set as the first delaminated completely due to the drip covers falling apart.
2 years ago i raid some old BBQs on council clean up day. I made the burners fit. I made the drip covers fit and haven't had a problem since.
Will never buy a Beefeater product again.
FYI, it's kept under cover with a cover over it when not in use.
I have owned BBQs for 20years. This one is the worst ever.
p.s. The weber bbq that lives in the CT is great!
p.p.s... i'm gonna go grill myself a burger right now!
-
Thats what we do for pizza's Kingbilly. Also allow 20mins of preheat. We quite often have a Friday night pizza night with a couple of ales and some red.
Jonesy, had the same problem the first time but now I preheat for at least 10 mins and then turn the heat down a little. Been working well. At first I thought I had wasted my money on the hotplate.

Mate, thats interesting I have had mine 8 years, gets used and abused and has been faultless. give it a wipe over and it looks new. In winter I keep the hood open and use it as a heater in the pergola. Mines the full stainless 6 burner. Have 5 mates all with Beefeaters and swear by them
I did know a mate who said he bought a beefeater & when I went to his joint it was called a beefeater on the hood but wasn't the actual the beefeater brand.
But if it ever dies I'll most likely get a big Weber

I thought that was the case, but in the morning the thought of waiting 10 minutes before starting breaks will kill me
So far only used it on 1 trip so still learning.
As to the choice of the weber I don't think the wife would have accepted anything else as a substitute, not that she had ever used one
-
We have brought a mat to put on the grill for things like bacon and eggs and onions.
Does the job. I love our baby Q
