Title: just got rear ended! i want a steel rear bar now
Post by: KieranR on March 12, 2014, 08:47:36 AM
Just got rear ended by a little old lady doing the school run! Now my question is will her insurance company pay me the cash for the repair and I'll just go get a kaymar rear bar instead? If the repair is less I can just pay the difference, her insurer is Aami,
The 200 faired a lot better than her daihatsu chirade, she's fairly shaken but otherwise ok

I'm going home for a rum, thats enough excitement for me for one day

no.
your only option is to work it out with the panelbeater and tell him a rear bar is cheaper than the factory one he can keep the change or you'll pay the difference if it is more.

Been there done that, if you have choice of repairer you can work it out with your panel beater. That said expect to pay triple for the Kaymar painted than a factory rear bar.

Just quoted the kaymar, 2k + 450 for color coding, will see what i can work out with the panel beater. Cheers, a kaymar is on the wish list so this maybe my opportunity to see what I can do.

Be clear on what you are buying the rear bar for it is designed to protect from a knock in the bush or similar. In a large rear impact it will not crush like your standard bumper that also has foam behind it and more force will be transferred to the chassis

I thought you could tell them you are happy to accept the cash. I had an accident some years ago and just had the insurance company pay me the cash. Has it all changed now?

I spoke with my smash repairer about something similar.

He said some Insurance assessors will Ok it, some won't depends on their mood on the day.

Make sure that the underlying panels are also straightened etc... better to have it back to factory and fully covered by the insurance company than rolling with a Kaymar and unrepaired damage.

Correct. By being a Third Party you are entitled to be cash settled if you request it. If they disagree, threaten the Ombudsman and rather than pay $2,000 odd to defend that, they will settle in cash.

$2500 to add another 70kg to the rear of the vehicle.

Now that is a barry bargain!

I've just been through the same thing, I told my insurance company (Shannon's) that I would like to replace the rear bumper with the ARB rear bar, they agreed to give me a cash settlement so that I can purchase the preferred ARB bar, they key is to be upfront with your insurance co, and discuss it as early as possible.

Speak with your insurance company.  Mate was in a similar situation and the Insurance Co. was more than happy to go with a Kaymar bar, it was cheaper than a genuine replacement item.

Did the same with a bullbar on our 80 Series. Had the alloy Toyota one damaged and it ended up cheaper to replace it with an ARB winch bar. AAMI were happy with that and so was I. Just had to fork out for a winch. Happy days.  8)

Doesn't include the carriers, just bar and pivots.

Kieran

It's your car and you were wronged. You don't need to get any insurance company involved you can go ahead and rectify it yourself and send the bill to mrs oldlady for her to send to her insurance company. Obviously to avoid a fight you can let them access the damage and agree on the amount but her insurance has no say in what you want to do. Think if she wasn't insured, you would be sending her the bill. Insurance companies huff and puff but other peoples insurance companies have SFA rights over you.

Yeah that's what I thought. Given its about the same $$$ for 25kg of molded plastic and pressed  crap that cost Toyota $9.50 in Vietnam to make , its much better value.

Kieran,

Remember that on the 200 you still need the factory bumper, they only cut the bottom off it to fit the kaymar bar so you may still need the factory bumper bar repaired.

Really good point made here, the rear bar will certainly add protection if that's what the author is concerned about, wont hurt resale either, Kaymar has a solid name. I don't believe the author has mentioned any concerns about weight so it's irrelevant.  This sort of thing happens more than you think. When I was living in the Darling River area of NSW it was the other end of the car, folks would tag a Kangaroo in a vehicle with no bull bar and do the deal with the insurance assessor to have a bar added , in most cases it was similar value than repairing the vehicle back to stock. As has been mentioned be upfront.

Cheers

Disco teddy.

Nah I didn't I just don't think the kaymar bar at 30-40 kg without arms is much of burden for the trade off of having a bar that will not rip off on a sand dune

That makes more sense then.
