Title: To catch Carps, good or bad?
Post by: Aujerrylight on March 07, 2014, 05:11:00 PM
What a sharp sentence!
I was happened to read some information about how people comments Carps, they are so called the most ugly, dirty fishes in the world, because they are bottom feeders and eats everything. Everybody says they live in the mud, they taste like mud. Finally I have figured it out. Carps looks ok la, I don't "dislike" carp, they're just not what I'd prefer to catch, because i don't eat it. I’m thinking should people hook them then release just for training how to fish? In Australia I have read it is illegal to release carps even fined.
Look at the information as below:
The common carp is a true bottom feeder, uprooting and disturbing submerged vegetation. These fish are notorious for altering their environment. They are most dangerous when introduced into an alien habitat and become an invasive species. They are believed to exist in all the continental states except Maine. Natural resource agencies in the United States and Australia spend millions annually to control the common carp.
So what do you think about Carps? Do you eat it? Or catch them then released or killed?
 ??? ??? :police: :police:

I think scarps should be locked up and never released back into the wild!

In QLD it is a very easy question to answer.

It is good for the environment to catch them and kill them. If you catch one you must kill it and dispose of in an appropriate manner, do not return it to the waterway.

The below is an extract from http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/fisheries/pest-fish/noxious-fish/carp

"This fish is declared noxious in Queensland. It is unlawful to possess noxious fish alive or dead or to use them as bait. It is illegal to place or release noxious fish alive or dead into Queensland waterways. Penalties of up to $200,000 apply."

The above is what I do.

Thanks

John

When I lived in NSW I would catch them and put them on a bull ants nest. Not only are they bottom feeders they eat native fish eggs and fish as well.  Female Carp can also lay eggs many hours after they are dead, that is why they should never be retured to the water.  Years ago they were using carp for fertilizer, not sure if they are still doing it.

It's true that they are not the best tasting fish, however if left in clean water for about a week they lose most of there muddy taste which greatly improves their taste.
That said I don't eat much fish in general, don't much like the taste.

Not sure if this is true.
We travelled down the Darling River a few years ago and were told this;
Carp must no longer be left on the river banks as birds eat them, if they have eaten the fertilised roe then crap in water the eggs are still fertile and will develop into fish.
True or taking the piss from tourists? I don't know.

You mean carps?
If so i agree, because of environment protection, but all the carps hooked up then by killed, and people don't eat it, pity that we have wasted it.
 ???

For such a pest, what annoys me is that the CSIRO was apparently a "few years" from discovering how to stop them from changing from Males to Females.... No females, no babies BUT then the previous Govt [Led by the Red Head] pulled the funding... SMART MOVE hey!!!

They make excellent bait for saltwater fishing

just scale... take the sides off (water rats get the rest where I am ... they sneak up and nick the carcass before I am done.

I use a spiked tenderizer on skin cut into strips and salt overnight then freeze.

Bad days when store bought bait doesnt work this stuff does ... they seem to like it ;D
- who would have guessed?

We use to catch them all the time down the Condy (Condamine River) in Warwick.  Use to chuck them in a feed bag and take them home for grandma to mash up and turn into the veggie garden!

Needless to say we always had fresh veggies!!

When I lived in Sale our house was opposite a cow paddock with a very shallow irrigation channel through it.  You could see carp 'swimming' in the channels when the water was shallower than the carp were high.  They'd quite happily squish through the mud with the top of their bodies proud of the water.

Kids used to catch them by hand and hang them on the electric fence.  You'd hear click click click while the fish got zapped.  But it only takes a few hours until they stink.

Philosophically I don't believe carp should be eaten, or put to any good use.  They should be skinned alive and rolled in rock salt before being discarded into the desert  ;D
