Title: sand dune sliders for moreton island
Post by: weeds on March 05, 2014, 09:14:30 AM
we don't have boggie boards and I assume you need the better quality ones to actually slide

I have heard of cardboard being OK

what's everybody use, really thin ply wood?

Because the masonite is so easy to break, we used to get a few sheets of thin ply and glue them together in a sort of jig to create a raised front, and glue the masonite to the bottom of that.

ditto the shiny masonite or if you are feeling flash.. some thin ply with laminex glued on.....
don't be tempted to have a piece too wide as it won't go as fast. I think 450mm wide by 1500 long is a nice size.
if you have kids that are a bit gung ho, make a narrower version for them and watch them fly (and eat sand when they stack)

Cut up wheely bins,
trimmed off neatly and good old telecom rope as handle.
 Worked a treat for years.

We did the same! Even with the jig and two layers of ply like Gec posted.
My cousin originally showed me the design and I shared it with some mates. His design was like a mini snow board. Even had some velcro-adjustable webbing straps for your feet.
Over time, the slight texture of the laminex was sanded smooth as glass!

Cheers!
Jono.

Back in the 90's we made up some sandboards by bending 5 ply up at the nose and laminating the underside. A bit of candle wax on the bottom and it flew! (I wish I had a photo of it)

Cheers Chippy:D

My toboggans are under way

Had some ply left over from renos.......made seven out of the sheet. Just under coated the underside.

Umm can't upload pics from the iPad with signing up to tapatalk

I have also cut a couple of grooves to make it easier to pull the front up.

Will post some pics later.....grrrr

Ply and laminex is the go.  Made heaps years ago.  We made a jig and used wind surfer straps for your feet.  If you are feeling crazy the bonnet off your car will work too with a bit or wax. (don't laugh I've actually seen this in action).
