Hi
We are talking about where we will go on our travels and Cape York is one of them.
Ug seems to think that the camper isn't able to go and we will need to leave it somewhere and tent it. Is he correct?
If so what does everyone else do?
if he is wrong, is there anywhere that we can't take ct?
Thanks
Vicandug

what type of camper do you own? lots of people taking campers to the cape on all the tracks pretty much. all depends on our preparation and vehicles ability.
-
There are hard ways to the cape, and there are easier ways that take a longer route.
Others will give more recent advice than I can.

We have an Outback Tanami and towed by a Nissan Pathfinder Ti 550.
Are there places where campers are not allowed to go?
-
As far as I'm aware, campers are allowed everywhere on the Cape, and yours looks like it would handle anything up there, including the Old Telegraph Track and Frenchmans Track... even the Old Coach Road if you're experienced 4wders.
If you're worried about bush pinstriping, the odd dent or turning the camper into a fishbowl at Nolans Brook, you could always base yourself at Bramwell Station or Eliot Falls for a few days to explore the Old Telegraph Track without the camper.
Plenty of people take their campers up there, and the Outback Tanami looks to be capable, but it probably comes down to personal choice.
Why buy an off-road camper trailer if not to take it off-road?
Cape York is a wonderful place. Whatever you decide, you'll have a great time. Happy Travels ;D
Cheers

vicandug, you've got probably one of the best of road campers on Australia, it's built solid, general rule of thumb, if you can get your car in , you can get the camper in  Oh by the way :worthles:
-
It's probably not so much "where can't the camper go" and more where do you think your tug can pull it. IMHO
-
Must be a struggle towing with only 550nm of tourque. Maybe you could go more places if you chipped it (like the north face of Everest). Ignore me I'm just the jealous type :)

Hey xcavator
I have tried and tried to put up pics. I have shrunk them, twisted and turned em but every time it tells me they are too big.

I am just a woman. I don't even know what that means. Lol.
I am assuming it means that my pathy and camper would be able to do it.
We were told that there were places that were not allowed to take the trailer. I was also worried about my pathy. We are going to get at tyres on it. We have done 4wd course up in the high country and in robe in the sand. I trust Ug. It's more just a knowledge of rules and regs of where they can and can't go

Let's see if I can help. First off, you can either host your photos on a photo hosting site like the myswag gallery or Photobucket or similar. Then you just post the link to your photo into your post. There's a button up above the text box under the "Bold Text" button to insert an image.
Or the easiest way is to just attach them to your post. But your photos need to be small (in kb terms). So either take them on a low resolution setting or resize them. I like this free program http://www.irfanview.com/ (http://www.irfanview.com/) for resizing. Go to "Image" and "Resize/Resample" then choose "640x480 pixels" which seems to work well for myswag. OK, last step, under the text box there is "Additional Options". Click on that and under "Attach" browse to where your photo is located on your computer and attach it. When you hit "Post", the photos you have attached will be at the bottom of your post. Maximum of 5 photos. If you have more, hit "Reply" and attach them.
Let me know if you need help

I to was going to suggest irfanview, great program and free (if you want).
I like it so much I paid the $10 bucks to the the writer (Irfan Skiljan) for a license and now use it on my work computer as well.
-
I have been going to the additional options and trying to post them.
I have gone to a program that someone suggested the other day and shrunk the photos to the size suggested then when I tried to post them I still couldn't. I have an Apple Mac. I will try again.

An apple what?..........is that a PC?

Sorry

Hi Vic.
What I was getting at was that your car isn't lacking in power...... if you cant get somewhere it won't be due to a lack of ponies under the bonnet. Enjoy!!!

There fuel stops aren't that far apart on the Cape that you'd need a long range tank, so if you're looking to save money on something, leave the additional fuel tank until later and take a jerry can for 'just in case'.
We have an 85L? tank and never needed to top up the fuel from the jerry.

Hey Vic
Take some jerry cans, alot cheaper than a LR tank. Thats what we did. I would get some quotes from other 4WD mechanics re lift kit etc. :worthles:

P.S. There is a bloke in Ferntree Gully that does great work so if you want his details let me know. D4D knows him as well. He did all my work on the cruiser.
-
Vic, we took a Kimberley Kamper up there & cris-crossed the Cape, towed by a 3 litre Patrol. Now with a 200 Series diesel & Quantum, I'd have no hesitation taking either rig where ever I wanted to go up there.
Fortunately I'm not interested in crossing mud flats, deep croc infested rivers, or soft tidal sand. That still leaves me a HUGE variety.

Yes Please that would be great. Word of mouth work is worth millions and I am betting he would be a whole lot cheaper than ARB. Although I think ARB are the only ones that do a bulbar for the TI550. Because of the pop up head light washer things.

Ug is computer illiterate. LOL. He only knows how to get to EBAY (his bible). I will show him the links though.

He is a good bloke and knows his stuff, the Patrol always goes to him prior to a long trip

If I read the posts correctly vicandug you sound reasonably new to the 4WD scene. If this is the case I'd suggest not towing a trailer up the Tele Track, and if you are going to do the Cape you should really do some of the Tele Track to experience it.
Other areas lille Captain Billy's landing or Virillia point would probably be OK to pull the trailer into IMHO, although it has been a while since I was up there so I don't know what the tracks are like at the moment.
I've done a little bit of off road towing with a trailer and at times it can be very challenging. If you can't get past an obstacle first go you may need to reverse and have another go, particularly if you don't have a winch to pull you through.
Often the trailer can be impossible to control no matter how good you can reverse a trailer, particularly in sand in my experience. If you don't have another vehicle or other mechanism to help pull you straight you may end up doing damage to the vehicle, the trailer or both. Plus you may be stuck in a spot for an extended period of time trying to extricate yourself.
I'd have a look at some of these YouTube videos to give you an idea of what the Tele track can be like.
