Title: best mattress for my tent
Post by: prado2004 on February 20, 2014, 10:17:14 AM
Hey guys, so I have a camper trailer to kart my gear but still use a tent. I have one of the oztrail anywhere beds like this one

http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Oztrail-Anywhere-Bed-Queen.aspx?pid=214553#Cross (http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Oztrail-Anywhere-Bed-Queen.aspx?pid=214553#Cross)

The frames great as its small and gets my off the ground. However I've had it with air beds. They suck!

Im thinking of getting a high density foam mattress or something for on top? Plenty of room to roll it up in the trailer or car or roof rack so throwing up options. I was thinking about getting some plywood say single bed size, fitting hinges so it folds over and doubles to double bed size. Then I can use this on the frame and then a mattress for on top. What sort of mattress should I be looking for? I want something that rolls up so it takes up less space.

Cheers guys

Our kids sleep on stretcher beds and to make them more comfortable we bought some foam mattress from Clark Rubber. These mattresses are quiet thick, but they fold up into  itself as the mattress is made in 3 pieces. (Mind you I just keep both mattress under the dust cover of the camper trailer as they fit perfectly in otherwise wasted space)

I think we paid about $100ish, but very comfortable.

Thanks Beachman,

Ive always had a stretch and just thrown a sleeping bag over but the misses won't have a bar of that! hence why we need something for the frame. Air beds are just too noisy, too uncomfortable and also having to pump them up daily is a pain in the ass as everyone knows.

I'll have a look at clark rubber

Actually thinking of giving this a crack, seems a lot cheaper than clark rubber alternatives for a queen size are up around $300.

Hi prado2004,

I've had one of these for a couple of years and it works great, really comfortable even if you've got it directly on reasonably rocky ground. Imagine it would go really well on your stretcher.

I also paired it with the sleeping bag below, yet to have an uncomfortable (or cold) night's sleep... and that's in Tassie  :D

I went to a local bedding manufacturer when I was looking for a new mattress for my swag.

Ended up with a 3 layered design about 100mm thick (to fit the swag).  They had a huge range of foam densities, plus latex and memory foam that I spend some time out the back trying out different combinations until I found one I liked.

Cost $280 for a King Size swag roll.  It has 25mm of really high density foam (can barely pinch it together nearly like a piece of rubber), 25mm of high density foam and the rest is latex.  It plus my King Goanna stretcher and I may as well be sleeping in my bed at home (which isn't a cheapy either).  The density and durability of the two foams used are both significantly better than the stuff usually used for 'high density' mattresses and swag rolls.  Unfortunately I can't remember the numbers for you as it was quite some time ago.

With the Latex it does make my swag weigh in at near 15kg.  There was another option with another foam instead of the latex that was $100 cheaper but I went for the extra comfort over being lighter.

I think you are much better off ditching the beds and sleeping on a mat. this is what we used when tenting it, a Dune 4x4 self inflating mat.
http://www.anaconda.com.au/Product/Camp-and-Hike/Sleep/Mats/Single-4WD-Mat (http://www.anaconda.com.au/Product/Camp-and-Hike/Sleep/Mats/Single-4WD-Mat)

We used to have a double blow up mattress which was very good quality and we tried a stretcher.
Both were very cold at night and the air bed was a pain to blow up all the time. Then we decided to buy the above mats and loved it, not only were they really comfy, they were also a lot warmer in cold weather.

Ebay and buy a single memory foam mattress. Works great.

Hey,

I have a pair of Blackwolf Mega Deluxe Mattresses, I did buy a set of cheaper bonded self inflating mattresses at first but the girlfriend was not happy sleeping on those.  I got her these, and a pair of nice sleeping bags that zip together and I've never heard a single complaint since about the bedroom setup.....

That being said, I have some friends who have the OZtrail Self Inflating Leisure Mattresses and they swear they're very good, and quite a bit cheaper!  In my opinion I would avoid the Queen mattresses, and instead get two single mattresses and place them side by side.  Rolling them up is much easier.

Here are the links for what I was talking about:

In the end, so long as you get a comfortable night sleep everything is all good!
