Title: Roman inflateable mattress
Post by: clarky on February 18, 2014, 09:21:06 PM
Hi everyone,

We are looking at changing our ct mattress. The high density foam is too hard for us (me) even with the egg shell overlay. An innerspring is the most likely option but we are also considering the roman self inflating mattress.

Nobody sells them locally so I was wondering if any any swaggers out there are using them and what they thought of them.

Cheers Clarky

When we first got our camper we opted not to get the mattress and use our queen roman self inflating mattress, this way we could easily put the kids mats on top as well as our chairs and have no probs folding up.

Lasted 3 trips!

We then put on an innerspring mattress, re homed the chairs and still put the kids mats on top.

Much Much Much better, will not be going back to the self inflator!

Funny thing, when we were tent camping we loved the 4WD mat and thought it was the most comfy thing ever. Once we got our trailer it just felt blah.

We use an inner spring in the camper but we use a self inflating mattress for our 30 second tent and love it.

I think 'self inflating' is a bit of a stretch though, they mainly get their comfort from the foam inside them. Ours is 100mm like most large 4wd beds.

I think you will find the roman brand is high density foam with an eggshell so Id suggest you try one first if that configuration wasn't suitable before. We don't use a Roman so I can say what its comfort level is like compared to ours.

Recommending sleeping arrangements for camping is so difficult because its such a personal thing when comfort is involved.

Why don't you get a latex memory foam type of mattress?  From what I'm told by people who have them they are the most comfortable mattress to sleep on. I don't know if you can get them made to fit you're ct. I would assume they would be pretty pricey.

There is a lot of difference in "high density foam" some is soft, some is hard, try and go to a place like Clark Rubber, and try different ones out, you might be surprised .
Our camper came with a 4" innerspring mattress, it was cold and hard, so we put 3 layers of old blankets under it and an egg shell overlay on top and it's nearly as good as  our waterbed mattress at home, but lighter  ;D

X2. I don't like the mattress in our trailer, yet Lyndall sleeps better when camping then I do. She loves it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think that at this stage, we might steer clear of the roman mattress and head down to Clark Rubber to check out what they can do.
Cheers, Clarky

We have two of the Roman Super Deluxe Moon Mats which we use in our Oztent Bunkers.
Absolutely brilliant to sleep on, and unlike other self inflators, roll up easily in 20 seconds.

So anyone shopped for good self inflating mattress' lately???
Still not 100% sold on them but looking for something to replace the airbed for the tent..

I borrowed a mates one that was about 3cm thick and may as well not have had anything underneath me.. felt every twig and rock under it. Also once inflated, they don't seem to roll up small again..

thoughts?

I got one from Anaconda a year or so ago whilst on special
A decent unit. I use it on a stretcher when tenting and tried it in the swag which worked great  aswell.
Very happy with it. Can't remember the brand atm. Sorry????

+1 re the memory foam - splashed out on that (over $200) for the custom-made spring mattress the missus bought from a mob in qld that make mattresses for racing yachts ($700+)

may as well just spend the same bucks on a quality mattress from captain snooze to be honest, especially if youre going to be spending weeks at a time on it like we do
