Ive been a GRM fan for many years and also a Holden suporter so when it was anounced last year that they were going to Volvo i was shattered.
But i have gotten over it and will be flying my GRM flag again this year. I also must admit the cars look great just hope they have race pace..
-
Will be interesting to see how it goes. Yamaha have made some pretty successful heads for many cars over the years. There race engines usually ain't too shabby.

I never thought I would "ever: say this.
I am actually getting excited to see the Volvo in action..
-
I wonder if they will have to add operational blinkers to that volvo as a trial to pass scrutineering..... be a world first for a volvo

All I can say is that you blokes have got short memories................
1986 Australian Touring Car Championship.
6th Dick Johnstone
5th Tony Longhurst
4th Peter Brock
3rd Jim Richards
2nd George Fury
and sticking it up the locals was
1st Robbie Francevic a Kiwi in a VOLVO 242GT
Go get 'em Volvo
To quote LOST 'BRING ON THE END OF TAXI RACING!!!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!"

I think its good for the sport. If V8 Supercars want to continue to grow and remain relevant then even more manufactures need to enter.
With Hyundai's rear drive large family sedan due for release in the 3rd quarter of this year, I think they may enter the championship in the next two years.
I like the look of the ovlov, we used to have a GL240 with a Holden 253 mated to a supra 5 speed and disc brakes all round. That thing used to scream.
-
One thing for sure, it will be a well turned out car. Ok, gazza wears his heart on his sleeve, but GRM are a good professional outfit.
Mite have to look at an X90 and fly the flag.

Don't forget Kiwi Gentleman Jim in the S40 winning the October 1998 Bathurst 1000.
and now we have Kiwi Scott McLaughlin behind the wheel of the S60 V8 Supercar...
-
Good point! Although I think the s40 was some weird collaborative effort by volvo and mitsubishi or similar and it was in that wierd and boring period of 'production' racing. Loved groupA and before loved the super tourers and loathed everything since until hopefully now

Not saying I didn't like them, in fact I think they are an awesome car that can hold their own against any other car in the world give or take a few Million $$ cars.
I'm just saying V8 SC are committed to rear drive V8 vehicles. They are the fastest growing Motor Racing category in the world and are very well receive right around the world. I think they have a winning formula at the moment. Their drivers are clean cut young men, and family men who generally only hit the headlines for all the right reasons (although there was that incident in Texas last year), not for defecating in hotel hallways, drug taking, illegal betting, game fixing, bashing the christ out of their wives/girlfriends or the average punter on the street.
But for the main part they are a great advertisement for their sport, their teams and they manufactures they represent. Sponsors are falling over themselves to get on a panel or race suit.
I think there are enough rear drive vehicles produced in the world to maintain the formula for years to come. If rear drives did dry up they could just easily adopt the NASCAR formula and just convert the front drives into rear drives ie Toyota and Ford. Up until a few weeks ago I wasn't aware that Hyundai had a family size rear drive sedan which is to be sold here in Aus. In the states the car comes with a V8 as well so it wouldn't be a giant leap for them to enter the contest.
Just my opinion. ;D
-
They don't have to be a rear wheel drive platform., Nissan use the Altima which is a fwd based vehicle, they just need a comparable V8 engine in the market which Volvo has with it's B8444s donk.

Unlike Erebus, , this team has factory support, and I reckon, big $$$$$$$$$.

Sure are.........us and the yanks are...
And going by crowd numbers in the last few years, it's a winning formula..
And even with the departure of local manufacturing, it's the cars Aussies associate with........and while a Ferrari sounds great, we don't connect because it is way out of our price range..
Same as Nascar in yankie land, no matter whats under the skin, the fans like the symbol...and the fans ARE the sport....and why the sponsors back it...

And that, my friend, are part of the reason Volvo and Nissan are in the game.

Robbie Francevic won the Wellington Street Race in 1985 in a Volvo 240T and the Australian Saloon Car Championship in 1986 also in a Volvo 240T. This pic is Robbie Francevic and John Bowe at Bathurst.
Volvo has quite a history here down under as well as in europe so i'm hoping we can see some competitive racing in this years series.
-
Holden and Ford will always have a presence in V8 SC, but you are right Mace, we will see other manufactures enter the game. I've heard Toyota are evaluating the Aurion/camry at the moment. Maybe they may enter a factory backed team to take some sting out of closing down their manufacturing side of thing here in Aus. As far as I'm concerned the more manufactures who enter the healthier the category will become which will guarantee its future which I think is the most important thing for us fans.

I have watched the Volvo 240T live in action, often referred to as "The Flying Brick" it certainly did'nt look very aerodynamic but geeze could it go. ;D
-
I had a volvo 242gt for about 5 years. Fully adjustable koni all round, electric overdrive, 4 wheel discs, Gt cam etc. Huge sleeper. From memory the T had water vapour injection into the turbo which may or may not have been fair or legal....

I remember watching Robbie going around Amaroo in the "brick"......after being used to the V8's, the vacuum cleaner sound was certainly different !! ???
I personally think the current V8's are way too loud......go to a meeting and don't wear earplugs............ :'( :'(
The crack on gear changes is just as bad...
But then again, I can remember Oran Park in approx the VL Commie days when they cracked down on noise and they were that quiet you could almost hear Brockies stereo going !!! ;D ;D
