Title: Thoughts on a Jeep Commander
Post by: Vitara_JaycoSwift_Outback on December 17, 2013, 05:16:42 PM
Afternoon all,

We are starting to look around for a bigger family car and a larger tow car for our Swift Outback and came across this Jeep Commander today at a local dealer http://carsales.mobi/cars/details/?R=16074558 (http://carsales.mobi/cars/details/?R=16074558)

Now I'm not familiar with Jeeps at all but so far it's probably the only car the SWMBO and I can actually agree on. I've read up a little about it this afternoon and from my brief research the opinions were generally good. I'm really liking the turbo diesel motor and to me it would suit our black top travels nicely. But I am just wondering if anyone has had one or knows a friend who has and can offer there thoughts and experiences?

Many thanks

Josh and Mandy

It's a decent tow vehicle, with 3500kg towing capacity.  Quite popular for that.

We travelled to and around the Flinders a few years ago with a mate towing a Vista RV behind his Commander.  We took some of the 'less travelled' tracks including one that came out near Grindells hut and was a bit rough and hilly.  ;D.  On that trip he had a problem with a window, that was caused by a dodgy repair after some hail damage.  He also had a battery die that resulted in being towed to civilisation.  He has had a few other issues, but still has the Commander.

Like all Jeeps, repairs can be difficult if you aren't near a Jeep dealer.  If you are a DIY type, then lots of parts available direct from the US to save money.

And of course, once you have a Jeep you can come to Jeep Jamboree, Camp Coffs, join your local Jeep club, and get yourself into Jeep Action magazine.

Additionally the editor of Jeep Action Magazine Michael has recently purchased a Commander as a tow vehicle. He's not known for staying on the blacktop ;D

They don't seem to have much ground clearance, much like the WH Grand that they're related to. I had an 02 GC and one of the first things done was an ARB suspension lift. Suppose if you aren't going off road it's not an issue.

Basically the Commander was a 7 seat version of the Grand Cherokee produced between 2006 and 2010.  Since Jeep was part of the Daimler group at the time the diesel engine was sourced from Mercedes.

As stated, Jeep parts are expensive in Australia and sometimes out of stock, and outside the major cities are totally unobtainable (I was stuck once in Mt Isa because Jeep didn't have a clutch plate in stock in Australia!), but Jeeps are great vehicles and totally addictive (I've still got mine in spite of the Mt Isa experience).

Autos aren't, manuals, you have a choice.  Part time 4WD with Hi/Lo, full time 4WD with single range.
