Title: Fillerup and check the oil, water and tyres sir?
Post by: prodigyrf on November 19, 2013, 12:14:19 AM
Do look out for the '100% climate controlled' gas, 'pure oil' and corn cobs in your tank, just in case you thought the oldies weren't really hip Greenies and as for grandma not being able to fill up her own car, who taught you that rubbish-

Those were the days when you drove into a Service Station you actually got "Service"
Unfortunately those days are gone and it's rare to even get a smile at the counter. :-[

A mates old man used to have a Servo in Lower Plenty that did full driveway service.  Everyday after school my mate would ride to the servo and pump fuel, check tyres, oil and clean the windscreen until closing time.

A bigger servo opened up next door, that did no driveway service and in the end slaughtered them on fuel prices.

WOW - cool pics!

I bet the unemployment level was a lot less in those days - and the level of pride taken in ones job was a lot higher too.

Yep. The oil companies argued that self-service was a good thing for all because fuel would be cheaper.

Guess how long THAT lasted.......

Same
Look at the price of fuel..

I remember things like the old man putting $5.00 fuel in the car, and watch how fast the litres went compared to the $$$$... now its so far the other way it aint funny

Back when servo's used to carry things like sparkplugs, points, leads, batteries, automotive things.. not get to the counter and (in your best Apu voice) "would you like 2 for one on mars bars today"

Love the carpark

When I first arrived in Adelaide 30 years ago the petrol stations all closed at the weekends, but some had pumps which you could put cash into to get fuel - a $2 note would get you 6-7 litres!

My wife gets fuel at one of our local I dependant servos. Where possible they still fill up vehicles for the female customers. They also give a 3 cent discount for anyone that produces a Coles, Woolies, IGA fuel voucher.

When we stopped at Mt Morgan west of Rockhampton December 2011, we got fuel at a servo there and we got driveway service. I got out to fill the car and the lady there said " hang on a minute I'll do that". I went to clean windscreen and same thing happened.

Another thing I'm interested in was how many different Fuel Companies did we use to have in Oz?

Eg, Mobil, Shell, Caltex, Esso, Golden Fleece, BP. Any others?

Obviously that early stacker carpark uses a lift system but I was kinda wondering if an attendant had to drive them on and off the lift presumably between the 2 stacks and where are the hand rails? Ans: Obviously you don't want to chip the punter's car doors on hand rails at the ends  :D

Exmouth Fuel Supplies (In Exmouth) are also driveway service (there is one girl there who refuses to do boats... so you have to fill your own boat) I do feel kinda lost for something to do though while the car is being filled up..

Forecourt service seems to be pretty much gone these days and i don't mind filling my own car and cleaning the windscreen but what i do find very frustrating is that most service stations are also now mini-marts and when you go in to pay for your fuel, you have to wait in a line while the people in front are purchasing their grocery items and their kids are still deciding what lollies they want. It seems to take forever. Fuel purchases should have a separate counter and till with another one for sundry purchases. >:(

Or just let us pay by card at the pump...

I know some over here do that, the Woolies ones all have the facility but only if you have one of their credit cards I believe.

Not their business plan! Keep you in the shop as long as possible so you get bored and start checking out the shelves for impulse purchases. This is, as we all know, how they make most of their $$$.

i recall similar here in Brisbane when i was a kid...halfway along the Magic Mile (Ipswich Rd at Moorooka) on the inbound to the city side of the road, used to be a servo that i'm pretty sure took 20 cent pieces only for getting the fuel. it was basically to allow you to get enough fuel to tie you over until Monday.

There are quite a number of things that have militated together to bugger the traditional servo:

1. The rise of discount auto accessory chains like Supacheap, plus tyre and battery chains, effectively dried up this part of their business. A lot of new car owners also thought they had to go to the selling dealer for service, which didn't help either. Lately we have car wash cafes walking off with their carwash business.

2. The high value of the real estate has meant that the owners of the servo site, usually an oil company, could not get an economic return for all the workshop space at rents that the mechanics could afford to pay. So they closed the workshops, redeveloped to get more rent from a bigger retail area or sold it for home units.

3. New environmental regulations have pushed up the costs of building a servo and the response has been to put more pumps onto less sites. We have leak detectors and secondary containment as well as vapour recovery at the pump coming soon. The costs of remediating an underground fuel leak can sometimes exceed the value of the land. In the old days, a servo could get by on 100,000 litres a month. Now we have big sites doing well over ten times that. When tough USA environment laws came in about 20 years ago, one third of the servos there closed.

4. 24 hour trading, to maximise the return on the site, has pushed up labour costs. Now there aren't enough staff to fill a gas bottle and you have to settle for a swap-over one. Security and electricity costs have also gone up. So have head office overheads at the chains.

5. The two supermarket giants now control about half of the Australian fuel market. They are able to offer huge fuel discounts by overcharging for their groceries and screwing down prices with their suppliers. That is killing a lot the independent servos and, if they wanted, the supermarket majors could put on  a price war that would send hundreds of these independents broke. A lot of independents carry an oil company brand, but they are still independent.

6. Servos and convenience stores pay over-the-top prices for their shop goods because of failings in the supply chain and discriminatory pricing by the major suppliers. As a result 15 per cent of their shop stock is now bought directly from the supermarkets. In the bush, it is closer to 25 per cent.

6. Twenty-five years ago there were around 13,000 servos in Australia. Now we have about 5,000 or so. It's a very cut throat business and definitely not for the timid of heart.

Twenty six years ago, I started publishing a little national magazine for service station owners. It was called "Service Station". Then it became "Service Station & Convenience Store News" and, later just "Convenience Store News." These days it is called "Convenience & Impulse Retailing". That's how times have changed. Believe it or not, the public has got what it asked for.
