Hi, we are very keen to get an Eagle or Swan Outback ordered but at this stage in the year will be ordering a 2014 model, for resale reasons.
Does anyone have a heads up on any changes Jayco will be making? A dealer told me they are moving to independent suspension and a stronger furniture model - do you know of anything else?
Also, any thoughts on Swan vs Eagle? Eagle is big enough for us (one child, 3, but hoping for more!) but I noticed more Swans on Gumtree and wondered whether demand and resale is higher for Swan? The extra storage is also appealing but maybe not worth $2k+.
I bought hubby Weber Baby Q for his bday, camping-themed pjs for anniversary, have camp chairs sorted for Christmas... Now I just need him to get serious and order the trailer!!

Hi The 2013 models have not been out too long so I'm thinking it will be awhile before a new model is out. I have the swan because I wanted that little extra of cupboard space which comes in handy, especially when you can open the door and just grab something from the cupboard. Plenty of eagles getting around also
Swannie
-
+1 for the Swan, we nearly went the Eagle but decided
on the Swan for little extra room, glad we did now
-
Swan for sure. It's definitely worth the extra. The extra room is worth every cent.

-
The details on 2013 models were available to dealers in late jan 2013. May have been earlier but definitely by then. Took few more months before they updated their website. I ordered a swan in late jan, and picked it up nmlate April.
-
hi there.
I just ordered a jayco swan outback 2014. Changes are new interior colours, and the big change is jaycos new independant coil suspention which will be standard on the outback (hence the price jump). Don't know what the interior colours will be, as the dealer will ring us when they know. Outside will be same colour.
Now the painful wait

Indeed, how long are they making you wait? Which options did you order?
Plenty of info in previous threads to make you reconsider the list of options that you eventually order. Best of luck.
-
Have to wait till about March April. Hey Chester with the suspension, the independent has lots of advantages. Tows better, turns better, tyres last longer. And I'll be doing a lot of beach tracks so clearance helps. Have friends and family with both and there is defiantly a difference. But in saying that I wouldn't have spent the extra 4 grand to get it on the 2013.

Hi bindi
This is what I ended up with.
2014 swan outback
trigg hitch
16" wheels
extra water tank
extra gas bottle and fittings
HWS with 12 volt water pump
outdoor shower
kakadu bed ends
fiamma wind out awning
wind up antenna with booster
CD player with in ext speakers
tap and gas fitting on draw bar
120 watt solar with 100 amp battery
rv control panel
kitchen awning
and I'm sure I missed something
Still debating on getting the extended draw bar or not.

Nice list of options there mate. Just on the stereo and speakers, just get a wireless speaker and run your music through your phone or ipad. Not only will it be cheaper but you then have the portability with the speaker and not necessarily need to be sitting right at your van.
Swannie
-
One thing I read about the extended draw bar is that it can reduce clearance when going over bumps, but makes it easier to reverse. Extra real estate on draw bar is main advantage I wanted.
Have a think about where you want the gas located on draw bar. Mine is further forward than I wanted.
I really appreciate getting shelves in wardrobe too.

Yeah this is one option I thought of a fair bit, in the end I thought with the money I'm spending I may as we'll get it I think it was only an additional $250. I rather regret getting that not .
But I do like your idea.

not to sure on the tyres comment, having seen jayco build quality I hope the IND susp is not made by them ;D ;D ;D I really like jayco as the product is well positioned in the price point and is good value for money ..but if they up and up the price I think they will become less value for money.
Just out of curiosity what car will you be towing it with offroad.
Anyway congrats ;D on your new purchase, be good to see some pics of the new model once out

.
Coil spring - now that should be an improvement over the current independent offered that still has the same stiff leaf spring on each side
http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=29381.0
Re clearance, unless the tow vehicle has the same underbode centre clearance with no diff pumpkins to drag on sand tracks, it's a bit off a moot point really?
Tyres last longer? Can't buy into that one. You will not wear out a set of tyres on a camper before they get old and hard. (6+ yrs).
I covered 25,000k around Oz in the first year of ownership in mine, you can barely see any wear. When I replace them, they will be far from bald..
Congrats on the purchase - you won't regret it. Did they increase the prices much over current models?

Hi LaurenB
I have a Hawk, which is the same size as Eagle, different layout.
Re the kids bed, The Eagle/Hawk have the double bed at 4ft, and the swan's double bed is 4ft 6. so a bit bigger. This won't really matter now, but when kids get a bit older, they will appreciate the larger double bed at their end.
Resale appears relative, given the higher initial cost of the swan. My 2011 (Jan) Hawk OB was $23.5k new (last of 2010 dealer stock), and I'm pretty sure I could get close to that back selling it nearly 3yrs down the track.
Also, If you intend to store the camper undercover, make sure the longer swan will fit :D

What is the obsession with independant suspension
It is not like you are riding in it or anything
Most people have some sort of articulating hitch these days so where does the benefit lay
Independent gives a better ride for the stuff you have in the trailer and behaves better as a tow vehicle.
Other than that no benefits - certainly none for offroading as you point out - the trailer articulates at the hitch.
I suppose another advantage is that I store all my excess timber and other stuff under my camper when it's parked at home - and the lack of an axle means I can stack the stuff a bit higher ;D

I dont think they make the suspension in the current models, all Alko gear so I would assume that the independent is also Alko or some other off the shelf brand.
I agree with Chester, I dont fully understand the obsession with it, to me is a 'nice to have' rather than a 'need to have and will pay extra for'
-
Hope its Alko rubber torsion not some over complicated system.
Like jayco. Except for the bloke who drills holes in the frame with a spade bit. What a dick!

Hey guys,
As for tyres chewing out more on single axel setup, it was on a discovery channel on different suspension show there made and how they perform. As for the tug, I've got a 1995 turbo diesel 80 series landcruiser.
-

I've had both and would say they are on par. A properly setup suspension regardless of what it is will get your eggs to their destination intact.

Kakadu bed ends???
yeah just better quality bed end flys than stanard ones, maybe it's a brisbane camperland thing

Coil springs??? on the simplicity independent suspension?
I thought it was still leaves, just on independent axles.
Happy to be corrected on this though......
Also in regards to drawbar......Definitely go for the extended bar.
It is very helpful not having to unhitch when you set up. You can leave it attached and still get in and out the back of the car. :D
We have a hawk that is now 4.5 years old and its the best thing we ever bought.
We can survive a month in it comfortably.
Just a tip for the outdoor shower..............Watch how long the kids showers are when you aren't on town supply......
You can chew through 50 litres pretty quickly.
We put our shower water in a 7 litre bucket that way your shower time is restricted.
Also invest in a quality water filter (clarence valley filters have good ones) It takes the plastic taste out.... Plenty threads about it on here.
If the new Jayco's look good we may even upgrade.......
Anyone wanna buy a 2009 with heaps of extra's??? ;D
Cheers and hoping you love it as much as we love ours.

Hey Brian,
Thanks for tips. The new suspension isn't simplicity suspension, it's one jayco have being working on and testing for 2 year. The only info I could find out from dealer is that it will be a coil suspension. Yeah I think I'll get the extended draw bar, depending on cost.

It depends on the tow vehicle, but we have no troubles leaving the camper connected to out vehicle and setting up for overnighters. You just need to remember to get anything out of the boot although on ours you can still open it quite a bit when everything is up. We chose to not get the extended drawbar so we can fit it into our garage and lock it away. With the extension it would not have fitted and honestly it tows much better than 90% of the trailers I tow regularly for work purposes and that's both forwards and reversing. My 2 cents anyway. Ours is a 2012 with standard 2 tonne axle, not independent and obviously standard drawbar.

Thanks Dave, yeah we have decided to go standard, We will be mainly doing caravan parks (have to take car off), and beach camping ( where we will do day driving for fishing ect). As well as my waeco will live in the car and would be a pain getting to it with van hooked up. After reading your post I went and measured the shed (which I hadn't thought about) with the extra long draw bar I'd have to take the spare wheel off to fit it in (pain in the arse).
swan2014

Yep we left our drawbar standard because we also wanted it in garage

No worries, thought I would put it out there regarding the garage. We were looking at extended until I got out the tape and like you said the spare would have to come off. As it is we turn ours and put it in drawbar first so we can access the camper in the garage. would hate to have to take the spare off every time too.

Update on the changes now confirmed by jayco for the OUTBACK range.
New moulding front and rear - not sure what colour yet.
No options on floor covering - one size fits all.
New range of colour choices for internal cushions, backs etc. (A bit drab, IMHO but each to their own)
The obvious previously discussed independent suspension. All Alko bits and set up to accept Alko ESC (which is just plain brilliant!) And its coil sprung with rubber dampers as well.
Leds throughout.
Solar wiring standard
External gas bayonet standard
Drop jacks standard
Inner spring mattresses standard
Double powerpoint added to end of benches standard
100AH battery standard.
And of course water tank, and all the previous things all standard still stay.......
Looks like good value to me....

These items were all standard on the 2013 outback models as well, when we were looking late last year the independent suspension was an $1800 option, innerspring
mattress's $600, $300 for battery and $75 for extra powerpoints. Will be looking to upgrade to an expanda next year sometime and most of these extras would have been on the options list to do.

the wife and I went in and chose the seat colours on Saturday, a lot more choices, but nothing spectacular. Curtain colours have changed to a lighter colour.
Very happy with the new standards, very good considering the price rise.
There is also a step insert that is now stanard but don't know what it is.
Ours should be at the dealer by early February, and behind our car end of February, not looking forward to setting up our soft floor camper over Xmas knowing our swan is on the way, but will enjoy packing it up.

We went into Jayco Prestige Geelong yesterday and walked out owning the Swan Outback. Going to count the days until we get her. She rolls off the second camper production on the 9th March. My husband was very impressed with the new suspension. He was able to get under a brand new Silverline that's has the leaf springs, coil and strut set up.
We were actually surprised and how reasonably priced they are. We got:
Hot water service and pump
Innerspring mattresses (now standard)
Water tap on A frame
Gas bayonet on A frame (standard)
Awnings both sides of the van
Prestige Annexe
Prestige bed flys
Extra water tank
Roof rack
Coast to Coast control panel (to monitor batteries and water tanks)
Extra double power point to dining table (now standard)
The new upgraded stove
The independant suspension (now standard on the outback)
100amb battery (now standard)
Trigg hitch
New colours
Drive away fully registered for $30k.
Considering we have been looking to purchase a secondhand which would have cost us between $28 to $30k and then the transfer fees we are really happy.
Prior to picking her up we are going to order the second annexe/storage room. My sister has one on her swan and swears by it. Handy little room for changing the kids with extra privacy. It zips on to the side of the main awning and the main annexe and has a door between the two. But it will cost you a tidy $950.
We are really excited.
I have taken photos of the new standard colours - benches, floors and curtains, only one choice available and our couch colour selections.
-
The guys down at prestige are great. The in house made bed flies, and awning are top quality products. Very reasonable price with those options
Swannie
-
PS - I know the fabric choice is a bit retro 60's but we allowed our 13 year old boy and 11 year old girl to choose the colours. This camper is going to play a major part in our lives and I wanted them to have/feel like they were involved.
-
Thanks Swannie. We cannot wait. It means shopping shopping shopping for me. We are taking her to Adelaide and Mount Gambier for her shake down when we get her. Then we will off road proof her, using all the tips I have been reading in these threads.
Plan to do a lot of limited off road around the Murray, Barmah etc.
Just out of curiosity has anyone fitted a tinnie to an outback roof. Will have to scour the threads for info.
-
Apparently, 2014 Outback models are now fitted with a coil spring independant suspension.

Yes they are now fitted with leaf springs, coils and struts. We looked at the system yesterday, very neat and tidy. Matches what we have had done to our prado which will tow it.
-
Good price with all those extras. Victorian prices definitely seem the best.
-

I'm guessing if you live outside of Victoria they may also factor transport costs to get it interstate. We are really happy with the price we got. We missed out on one prebuilt for someone else and the sale fell through. It was a 2013 outback swan with everything I mentioned before, plus cd and internal and external speakers. But we still would have had to pay for innerspring mattresses. They were giving it away at Jayco Ballarat for $28.5k. That would have been the bargain of the year.
But I am glad it fell through because of the upgrade to the suspension and the new included extras.

That is an unreal price for what you have mentioned. I reckon to get the same form Brisbane camperland you would be looking at 35-37k, I hope to order a Flamingo later in the year and it may be cheaper to order it from Melbourne and go down to pick it up.

Axl, even with your fuel costs you would still save a tidy sum by coming to get it. The guys at Jayco Prestige Geelong were amazing. We told them what we wanted and what our budget was like originally only wanted to spend 29. But given that a lot of last years options are now standard it the 2014, it allowed us to add a few extras without totally blowing the budget.

Did you consider aircon?
Swannie
-
I heard this from an industry source. Jayco actually hired a renowned ex HSV engineer to design and develop their 'budget independant' suspension system on the outback range. So from what I hear/read it should be unique to Jayco.

When I was asking, the local dealer said it was a Jayco design too.
I brought it up as I asked him if it was from a reputable company that provides independent suspension to the upper market campers.
-
I just recently sold my 2011 swan OB for a great price.... My friends got a price from mildura and it was $4k cheaper than Brisbane....
-

Swannie
Swannie, we didn't consider air con. Probably should have, but we will plan trips up the Murray and watch the weather. Good things about the camper is we can leave it packed. Just add food and clothes and we are off. Also my husband has a tiny that he wants to put on the roof. Knowing our luck, we would probably smash the air con.

Wonder how much input the former HSV chief engineer had on this design? He only started mid last year.
Looks good though.

No I must admit I haven’t got a firm quote of them as yet but I do have their 2014 price lists. With all the extras Andrea27 has mentioned a 2014 Flamingo Outback form them would come to around the 36K mark.
Did you order the outback model or the standard model Swan? There is 4K difference in price between the two models so the standard Flamingo with these extras would be around 32K.

Outback versions of the Silverline come with Jayco’s new independent suspension. Designed for “harsh Australian conditions”, the beefy off-road set-up features heavy-duty Pedders shocks and coil springs inserted with Aeon hollow rubber springs for progressive damping.
According to Jayco, the new suspension was subject to a two year testing program and is manufactured using automotive processes including pressing, CNC machining and robotic welding.
Like the popular Cruisemaster independent suspension, the new Jayco system boosts road clearance significantly while offering toe-in/toe-out adjustment for wheel alignment.
It also comes with Al-Ko stub axles, bearing and brakes to make it compatible with Al-Ko electronic stability control (ESC) fitted standard to all Silverline models.

We got the outback model, if we bought off there pricing we would have payed about 40000. Then we negotiated to about 36000, then with no trade got them to 33000. Then went into the caravaning show in oct, and after dealing with the manager got it ordered for just over 30k. Should be at camperland now getting the final touches, and ready for us to pick up in the next couple of weeks I cans wait.

Holy cow $8k cheaper than list price... well done :cup:

Hi bindi
This is what I ended up with.
2014 swan outback
trigg hitch
16" wheels
extra water tank
extra gas bottle and fittings
HWS with 12 volt water pump
outdoor shower
kakadu bed ends
fiamma wind out awning
wind up antenna with booster
CD player with in ext speakers
tap and gas fitting on draw bar
120 watt solar with 100 amp battery
rv control panel
kitchen awning
and I'm sure I missed something
Still debating on getting the extended draw bar or not.

Guys bit off topic but my old man bought a 2012 expand outback. It is pre-wired for solar and he wants me to rig it up for him. I can see in the junction box that the cables are there on the roof. My question is where are the other end of the cables? Is there a regulator hidden somewhere I dont know about or is it just literally pre-wired with cable and thats it? Its got a 100amp hour battery in the usual spot under the dinette seat but I can't see the other end of the solar cables in there? I must admit I haven't had a massive look yet but just wanted to ask the question.

I think pre wired means that the wires are just run
On the goldstream one end of the wires is under a little cover on the roof and the other end is just comine out of a little hole near the battery in the front boot. So i will need to purchase my own regulator and panels

should be in the battery box or just near it and you will have to put a regulator in also

Yeah fair enough, he bought the van second hand and even though its prewired for solar he's decided to just have a 200watt panel on a 10m lead instead of mounting in on the roof. He's going to leave it in the van under the bed, then when he arrives carry it out and place it in the sun. This way it will be more effective then being on the roof as generally you try and park the van in a shady place if you can.
should be a good setup once its done. Regulator will be mounted next to batteries and I will run the wires to an anderson on his draw bar, then he will have a 10m anderson extension to place the panel in the sun and he can just lock it to a tree or something to stop people thinking they like it more than he does.

That's the way I had it on my eagle that way you can park in the shade as you say.I did have the regulator still on my panels so I could use it on my ute also

Yeah I plan on putting the regulator at the batteries solely so there is no voltage drop on the panels, he won't need it on his car.
Too easy cheers guys

I beliwve redark does some sort of battery isolator and solar regulator all in one
