Title: Have you ever hit a Crow while Driving?
Post by: Macca357 on October 30, 2013, 08:04:00 AM
How many times have you been driving on a country road and you spot a Crow pecking at road kill. You think right this time I've got one and at the last second they just take a step to the side without a care in the world.  In 20+ years of driving I've never hit a Crow.  Can any Swagger claim the ultimate road kill?

Gooday Macca, when I was working in East Gippsland one of our supervisors reckons he got one with his utes aerial while driving up around Omeo.

Cheers, Gary M.

Got one with a Daihatsu Charade after a night shift, he miss judged my speed LOL. Went back and picked it up took it home and hung it from my chook run fence ( it was dead) it worked a treat keeping other Crows from pinching our eggs!.   Kanga.

Not a crow but we've had a galah take out the side mirror on a Kluger when we disturbed a flock on the side of the road.  Left the mirror dangling by the electrical wires.  I don't think the galah survived that one.

Took one crow out once with the ariel on my ute and another with the top of the windsreen  :cup:. The one that hit the ariel bend the ariel so hard and fast that it came back and dented the top of the door frame.

Have also taken out five pluvers in one go when I crested a hill and they didn't have time to react. What a mess across the front of the ute.

Some great reports there.  Definitely never tried to take out a Cow Danny.  Very funny and great pic.

There was a University study done on the Newell Highway near Moree comparing Truck vs Car crow kills. They reckon that the crows set up a sentry that squawks Carrr, Carr as a car approaches hence not many road kills from Cars. Trucks are a different story.  Crows have not developed enough yet to squawk Truck!

Never hit one and only seen one dead on the road. It was the last Friday the 13th!
Not sure if that is the ultimate bad omen but I'm glad it wasn't me :o

Had an eagle bounce off the bullbar in FNQ last year at about 90kph.  Hit the bar and bounced over the roof.  Must have gone 20m in the air cause I saw it bounce off the dirt road when it landed..... Dead as.  Stupid bugger swooped at us.

I hit a seagull once which had just started taking off as I passing, so he gently caressed the headlight, slid up the bonnet and then slid up the windscreen and up over the roof and assume into the roof racks.

I’m sure the roof rack would have hurt, but looking in the mirrors I did see loose feathers and then saw him flying away when he got over the car.

Very uncanny to see this thread as I hit one about 3-4 mornings ago on my way home from nightshift, it was just sitting right on the middle of my lane and had its back to me. Going 100 kph, I certainly thought it would have flown or hopped out of the way but I cleaned it up with something underneath the cruiser. As soon as I hit it, I thought bugger me I bet that is rare, such a smart bird.

Has anyone ever seen a baby crow? I think they must be born full size!

no crows for us but a few bird mishaps - One heading south from Broome a bird decided to fly head first into the Snorkel of the Prado - actually broke the grate part of the snorkel.  Another bird somehow ended up stuck inside the grill area of the car - no idea how it did it as it was a pita to get it out.

Never hit a crow in 45 years of driving.  They have perfect timing.

The goats along north west coastal highway south of Carnarvon are similar.  Hundreds of them feeding along the roadside edges but have only ever seen a couple dead.

Hit a parrot fair square in the middle of my chest riding a motor bike on the New England Highway in the early 80's. Nearly knocked me off my bike. Feathers and sh!t all over my jacket, wasn't pretty.

Bullbars on the Prado took their first victim a couple of weeks back. Out in the wheatbelt and the wife decides she wants to drive (she normally avoids driving the Prado like the plague) and she almost immediately took out a galah. It managed to get itself wedged between the bars and headlight protector and clearly wasn't going to fall out of its own accord so yours truly had to extract it to spare the wife's sensibilities. ...and not, there are no pictures!

Any crow I have seen has had good timing, but I did hit a Kookaburra many years ago in a Datsun 180B.
He/she swooped down in front of me and got creamed at 100kph.
Twenty minutes later, as I slowed down in the next town, he flew off.
I guess the bastard found a new way to hitch a ride, but the lack of the feathers that flew off at impact would have made him cold that night.

The last one was feeding in a floodway and never knew what hit him  >:D

another one that is rarely hit is a Willy Wagtail, have only ever seen one hit and even then it was with a UHF antenna.

Evening swaggers, first post here since becoming a member, so Hi everyone.
While driving trucks interstate many years ago up near Pittsworth in Qld, I managed to hit several of the poor buggers at once.
Seems they were fighting over a carcass on the road and did not hear the old S-Line sneaking up on them at 100klm/h and by the time they did, it was all over bar the squawking. My wife and I pulled up in Brisbane a few hours later and when I got out and walked around the truck, there was still two wedged in the bullbar (thankfully dead). We were never really sure of exactly how many we really hit and killed, but we are sure we hit about 4, with a few escaping out to the side rather than trying to take off.
Never even got close to another one since..

I have also hit a kookaburra (he flew across the road in front of me) and again when I have pulled up some hours later, he was sitting on the bullbar with his back against the grill looking at me ! After a quick double take, he then just flew away, seemingly no worse for the experience except for being several hundred Klms away from where he started. I know they do not take relocation well(if at all?) but at least he would have had a chance.

I seem to recall growing up as a kid that the old man would say that you needed to be doing at least 140km/h to hit a crow. Never intentionally tested the idea but can say that I have never hit one.

Not a Crow, but a great true story involving a Rosella.

The Bride (who was driving), Myself, and our 3 year Old Daughter and I were driving back to Adelaide from visiting The Bride's rellies in Victoria. About 5km West of Nhill (awesome Bakery), there was a flock of Rosella's on the side of the road. Bride slowed down a bit and the flock took off across the road at the last minute. Needless to say, a couple of loud knocks and feathers everywhere. A quick look back and there's one in the middle of the road, feathers blowing in the wind and a few feathers stuck in the wipers. We keep driving, making jokes about tomato sauce. I tell the daughter it's how they actually make sauce. A quick left to the man boobs from The Bride and I tell her it's not true.

Anywho, we stop for fuel at Keith, SA and after we've filled up and moved the car to the grassed area, I decide to check the front of the old VT Commodore for any damage. None visible. Pop the bonnet, look in and hear this almighty squawk..............Eff me it's another Rosella!! Poor "Rosie" was caught between the radiator and front grill on the bottom left. Now let me add, it's about 3.30pm on a Sunday arvo and the place is pretty quiet (apart from Rosie). I'll be honest, I was half tempted to go with my gut instinct, shut the bonnet and keep it to myself until we got home. Just for pure fear of what would happen if I was to tell The Bride. But I thought no, she's inside with the kid getting drinks and nibbles, I'll be able to sought this out before she comes back. I grab it by the back of the head at the "shoulders" and lift it out. Rosie came out easy I wondered how she stayed in there so long. I put her on the grass expecting, but more so hoping, she would fly away or at least walk. Nope. Straight on to her side. Rosie's not going to make it. I picked her up went to give the Ol' neck snap and then I hear a screeching "STOP! DON'T!".......Rosie can talk! It's amazing.........turns out it's The Bride in an amazing imitation of a Rosella. I tell The Bride Rosie's not going to make it and it's the best thing. "Get a Vet" The Bride squeals. "Squaaaawwwkk! Squaaaawwwkk!" Rosie starts squawking herself stupid in either agreement or discomfort. I'm going the latter.

Now there happens to be a couple of people filling up looking in the direction of a Woman yelling at a Bloke with a squawking Rosella in his hand and a 3 year old girl eating a muffin and drinking a fruitbox watching on. Probably still wondering if Daa is actually going to make Tomato Sauce. I tell The Bride I'm not taking Rosie to Vet as Rosie can't even stand. We're in Keith and it's a Sunday. In frustration The Bride says a few carefully chosen words about me and proceeds to get in the car with the kid. Once they're in, I turn away and give a twist. Rosie's quiet. I grab an empty bag from the boot to the tune of "Murderer!" and filthy looks from The Bride and proceed to give Rosie as respectable parting of ways as I can at a Roadhouse without a shovel. Rosie is placed in the bag and into the wheelie bin. Now, I actually stopped a moment and considered Rosie's journey from outside of Nhill, Vic to Keith SA, some 125 odd Km's. Not too bad I think, but conclude I have done the right thing.  Feeling emotional about Rosie, I like to think we'd bonded in that 15 mins, I shut the lid and then I hear a squawking again. I turn to the car expecting to cop another ear full, only to see The Bride, looking at the Daughter. "Squawwwwk!". "Squawwwwk!". It's bloody Rosie! Now I feel like complete Shite. I open the bin and see Rosie out of the bag, laying on the bottom of the bin going nuts. I reach in and pick her up. Now, I know there's going to be some Blokes hear who will know this feeling. You know that feeling when you can't help but make eye contact with The Missus and she has that look? This look was "I told you to get a **** vet". I still to this day, don't why I looked at her. I never will. I quickly dis-engage eye contact for fear of being burnt to a crisp with magical eye lasers and this time give a good, firm twist. I wait for signs of life. Nothing. Rosie's gone. The next few km's were pretty quiet with not a word spoken. Until the daughter pipes up with. "I like sauce Daa".

It was one of those times going with my gut instinct would have been a great idea. A bit like the one I had when I was getting married........... (kidding kidding)

I have driven about 50,000 km a year for the last 10yrs, and when safe to do, I try to hit crows, but with no success yet. They are so crafty, and always know when to take that last hop to the side.

I have had a wood duck smash a windscreen at 110kms/hr in the SE of SA about 10-11 yrs ago.

Also, my UHF and Phone antennas have been pretty good at collecting bats.

I had an eagle try to take off from edge of the tar with its dead prey in its mouth and fly straight into the windscreen, wife was driving, it scared the absolute bejesus out of us both. Feathers everywhere and a dead hare wedged in between roof rack and roof of the pajero when we pulled over to check out the damage.

Was travelling bruce hwy years ago, came up on this, didn't hear or sea any noise/feathers or flying off. I thought cunning little bugger ducked under c'dor. Pull up at servo couple hours later when another bloke says "you got a passenger". There he was wedged in the bumper air duct ( dead) . Guess he wasn't as clever or short as he thought

You can get the odd hitch-hiker-
http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/lucky-platypus-survives-canberra-roadtrip-20131010-2v9wq.html
Lad hit a BIG roo on Yorke Peninsula the other week. Going nowhere with the radiator smashed and around $6k damage.
A crow never and when we used to shoot the long paddocks they'd sit until the moment they saw a rifle and gone like the wind.
Up the NW of WA there were plenty of wedgies on the road kill and most would fly off to the side but I noticed a few just sitting watching you go past and they'd obviously worked out which way you were travelling and you weren't going on their side of the road.
Hitting a swarm of bees on the mobike wasn't much fun particularly if one or two got up under the full face all of a sudden  :o

Took one out just out of Jerramungup in 1983 with my canary yellow XC panel van  - the horrid colour must of made it commit suicide, left a good dent on the roof just over the windscreen

No, never hit a crow, they're pretty cunning, I reckon you only hit them when they're hung over and a bit slow. Crows are quite intelligent. While stopped and eating lunch, I've seen them gather food, walk away with it and hide it under scrub. Go back get more and hide that.

Took out 4-5 cockies one day in the Falcon, they just swung up into the air, then straight back down again and BAM! Cockies and Galahs are 2 of the biggest hassles I come across daily. Eagles are bad as well. If you come across one eating road kill, they take so long to get going and they're bloody big.

I hit a Crow on my motorcycle heading to Swan Reach in Sth Australia on our way to Mt Pleasant, got me right on the top front of my helmet, broke the visor and near knocked me out, just didn't duck quick enough, took about 10mins to recover and keep going.

Also hit a flock of Budgies out west somewhere in my old 1966 Triumph 2.5PI, was scraping blood and feathers off for weeks afterwards, scared the crap out of me, I ran off the road because I couldn't see out the windscreen.

No crows, but we hit (got hit by?) a galah north of Broken Hill a couple of years ago.  Flew up and straight into the middle of the windscreen, hit so hard that the rear view mirror flew off, and we nearly had a heart attack.  Didn't break the mirror mount, but the shock force must have made the mirror pop off.  I reckon if it had been filmed the slow motion play back would have been awesome.

Hey gv 2003,

On your quote of being on the look out for drop bears, you've got your N and O around the wrong way.  ;D

We collected 3 crows together on the road between Horsham and Mildura in September, all 3 were hit by the bull bar, 2 then going under the car the last stuck between the bar and grill. lucky no damage to the car or new bull bar.

We'll Bob I think you may have the record with 3 on one trip.  Driving to work this morning I took out a bird with the UHF antenna (first time with the antenna). They don't seem to recover too well after a hit on the UHF antenna. I think it was an Indian Mynah. Still no luck with a crow.

  Macca.

We were out the back of Shepparton, the missus was driving and there was a flock of cockies on the road ahead. I told the missus to hold her line and speed and they would fly off. Well they didn't fly off and she cleaned up quite a few. I was pulling bits of cockie out of the car for days.

just south of the Exmouth turnoff in March last year at about 0300 I spotted one just about halfway on the road but it was facing the right hand edge, so I backed off a bit and moved left, then the bugger turned and went straight for my ute, I braked hard, dropped a couple of f bombs and couldn't swerve as I would have rolled and with wife and kids in the car, well I'm sure his tongue and nostrils rubbed themselves on my drivers side window...pulled over and regathered my self and continued on.

coming back two days later in roughly the same spot, there was a cow with its front half missing! presume a truck cleaned it up!
