Title: Favourite TV series
Post by: GanG on October 28, 2013, 07:54:43 PM
I must confess to being a bit of a movie buff and I love to read..........I dislike most TV as a general rule, especially so the rigged talent quests and reality crapola like big brother that they pedal.

If I do watch TV it tends to be something that is a true distraction. I tend to watch stuff I can download, no adverts etc.
current faves are in no particular order :) :

The Walking dead - new season just started
Strike Back - finished
Falling Skies - finished
Grimm - awaiting next season

So, What are you lot watching when you are trapped in domestic servitude and cannot shed the entrapments of modern life and go bush?

can not wait for the next season of Game of Thrones.

Walking dead was getting great last season, although it looks like it is sliding back into the long dialog and deep and meaningful episodes. I hope this isn't true, just give me some old fashioned zombie killing without all the talking :)

Sons of Anarchy is up there
The Good Wife is an easy watch also

Whale Wars starts again on 1 dec (for those not familiar this show follows the that dude from the steve irwin ship getting in the way of the Japanese whalers. It is some interesting viewing, those dudes are crazy)

Walking dead for me,

I just imagine... what if all the people I dislike became zombies I could chop their heads of with an axe and not get in trouble for it ;D ;D ;D ;D

Oh and sometimes I follow the story line but mostly I just imagine what if , and sometimes I think " if they were not infected I could pretend I thought they were a zombie and kill em anyway" seems fair to err on the side of caution if the world was ending right. ;D ;D ;D

Jet ;D ;D

I too enjoy The Walking Dead ... but there isn't much else to watch these days.  I do enjoy a good David Attenborough series.  I need something with substance ... not really into reality ... it gets boring quickly for me.  Spicks & Specs, Rockwiz, for a good laugh ... not enough of this sort of show anymore ... Iron Chef ... for something different.

But the oldies are still good in this day and age.  I absolutely loved Kenny Everett's Video Show, The Goodies, Get Smart and all those ABC shows I enjoyed as a kid ... Still enjoy Dr Who ... which really says something about the show ... how many others are still running 50 years on?

X 2 - Alan Sorkin's scripts are machine gun perfection, IMHO. I hear his The News Room is as good - can't but it online in Oz and refuse to pirate it.

Game of Thrones  X  n  The production values put many movies to shame

The Good Wife X 2 - classy & clever plot line, complex & deeply flawed characters

United States of Tara - started good seppo cable comedy - Toni Collette's best role

Yeah, I watch a lot of that, surprised any one admits it publicly. Ah, sorry, did U say "Porn Stars"? Didn't notice the word stars on the end. .

I like shows like "gasoline", "how do they do that",  "junkyard wars" pretty we'll any that you see how to do/build stuff. Tried that WC Choppers thinking I was going to learn stuff. All I learned was they were all wankers being wankers.
Do enjoy Big BangTheory too of course.

Post 2000 Dr Who, sport is obviously not on the option list so not much else. Simpsons is on the slide (has been since season 10 IMHO) , Big Bang Theory (purely because it's on nearly every time the TV is turned on) and unfortunately more than a few kids' series eg Peppa Pig etc etc

I've been recording that to watch but haven't made an effort yet because it looks like James Spader acts the same as he did in Boston Legal, which I really enjoyed when it was first out but if he is the same smug, acid tongue character, then it would be too much of the same. What do you think???

I used to wonder why anybody downloaded TV series.. I mean who has the time to sit through that much TV?
The my son got me onto The Walking Dead (I do love Zombies!) and I figured out the advantages...

1. download an entire season, or a few seasons of chosen show.
2. When dinner is over, dishes done and kids in bed, site down and watch an episode or two. Ad free and you aren't tied to any certain time.
3. Repeat until you run out of episodes.

With the amount of ads on free to air (and even subscription) TV these days, even when you can find something decent to watch, the ads just ruin it. Watching an actual movie on TV these days is terrible.

After we ran out of Walking Dead episodes we started on Game of Thrones, then Breaking Bad.. both HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Now Walking Dead is back and we only get the new episodes each week after they air in USA. I have to say the interest is waning. Season 4 so far is pretty dull.

In a real survival situation you should never drink urine as it can lead to kidney failure. He is a tosser, it is all staged with camera take after take. The show where he was up here in the Torres Strait had all of the locals laughing. Camera crew catching a fish on a real fishing rod for him to unhook and put on his survival one. By the time the camera rolls to show him pulling in the fish it was dead.

Grabbed the Walking Dead and quite enjoyed it. But once the 2 different groups started Warring, that was it!
The world had become a 'fight for survival', but instead of banding together, they choose to try to kill each other...sort've struck home the Yank mentality, that that was the only type of story-line the script writers could come up with  ::)

Yeah - read about it. The current season of Newsroom (3) is going to be the last... what a shame..

BTW - "Life" was a good show as well...

Don't get to watch much TV with kids and odd shift hours

Gallipoli
Game of thrones.  Love the unpredictable nature of it
M.A.S.H.
Arrow
Big Bang
Blacklist, but liking the back story more than the story for the episode

Sick of shows along the lines of lawyer / "police" type shows
NCIS
Law and Order
Criminal minds
How to get away with murder
God wife
And Australian un-reality TV

Just to throw a couple out there that haven't been mentioned ....
Eureka
Fringe
Warehouse 13
All good for whole family enterainment - I'm very well middle aged and enjoyed them tho !

Not for children under 25 .....
Banshee - have just bought S2
GOT S4
Low winter sun
True detective

Actually True Detective was awesome , the acting top notch and seems slow ....then you are in - the setting ( in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina ) is one of the characters ..

A good movie was 'Gone Girl '  - do not watch if wife is planning to do you in - or vice versa . . . a lot of very good twists .

I  listen to music and read rather than watch tv 99% of the time.
I do try to watch Criminal Minds if I remember its on, but I forget more often than I remember. Morag has recorded it a few times for me but since I cant be bothered trying to learn how to watch recorded shows she has wisely stopped.
My daughter downloads the Walking Dead so I can watch the full season stop to start in one sitting.
Morag however plans her evenings around the tv shows that are on. If she is watching one she records another.
She is a reality tv show addict.

Cant belive we are 5 pages into the thread and not one mention of The Wire. Most definatly one of the best series I've seen in a long time.
If only just got onto Game of Thrones and so far its been good. I'll throw another vote in for some of the commonly mentioned ones like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead.
Cant belive some people actually watch Big Bang - I lasted about 5 mins of watching that before throwing it into the same pile as Home and Away

I'm guessing you don't have to use the damn things for work then....

a mate of mine is a checking caption with Virgin - says (up in the air) flying is 98% total boredom - (boots on the dash, reading the papers type of stuff....),   and the other 2% totally intense seat of the pants stuff...

What's that stat. about the majority of air crashes being survivable? - if you can remember a few things....    A whole documentary was made on this...

#Count the seats rear and aft from you to the exits.
#DON'T inflate your life vest till you're out of the plane - otherwise you're pinned to the ceiling/floor as it sinks
#burst into action immediately you can exit the plane - don't hesitate - climb over (empty) seats etc
# Crawl along the floor - follow the green exit lights if acrid smoke is present
# plus a bunch of other stuff I cant recall   grrrr

all this I have "gleaned" from countless episodes of Air Crash Investigation

>>>>>  on topic - "Wire in the Blood"

Its actually not a remake. Same people/ actors, just picks the story up now so all the conspiracy about 911 etc etc.
I think i read somewhere is a single series run to tie up loose ends.
I hope Mulder gets abducted

Well 4 episodes into X-Files & I'm not feelin the love.
Doesn't seem to have that mystical theme, seems to be bordering on silly & humorous, even Duchovny has a silly to smirk on his face most of the time. Thinking they're all looking for the money with the new series. But intriguing enough to keep me watching
Another i have started watching is "The Expanse" .  Not bad sort of dystopian cross between Gravity, Interstellar & The Martian,  with a bit of Total recall & The 5th Element thrown in for good measure

it came on live on Netflix at 6pm... the entire 13 episodes.

I'm binging.

oh and for those that aren't adverse to the occasional "download"... look up "the Expanse".

it's a scifi series based on a brilliant series of books (currently listening to book 3 on audiobook during my daily commute)

think of the Expanse as being like... Firefly meets Aliens.

It's an original series from the SyFy network, but Fuxtel don't want to show it in Australia...
