Title: Any refrigeration repairs ?? westinghouse fridge freezer problem
Post by: crykies on October 27, 2013, 04:56:37 PM
Hi not sure if anyone can help here but thought there are most walks of life on here.

I have a 607L side by side westinhouse fridge freezer that is icing up in the air vents of the freezer. This has made it loose tempreature in the fridge and the freezer.
If anyone knows about these things is there anything for me to check? at the moment we have defrosted it and will turn it back on and see what happens but i think it will just happen again.
Just wanted to ask here first before we have someone come out to fix it.

At the moment we are using the 2 ENGELs  ;D

Any help would be great.

Chris.

Chris

Check the drainage hole at the back of the fridge it may be blocked. How old is the fridge.

It may be the thermostat gone.

I was thinking that. Was hoping someone on here can tell me how to check it with a multimeter

It maybe the thermostat as stated above or unfortunately you it may have a slight gas leak.

If the gas is low the refrigerant may be all evaporating before it gets to the thermostat bulb
section of the cooling tubes and therefore the bulb doesn't get cold enough to turn of the compressor.

The cooling unit works but shouldnt get like this. See pic.
The fan works and this blows air to the fridge. But once the vents are like this it dont draw cold air as the ice blocks air flow for the fan.

I have defrosted it and cleaned the cooling elements of dust at the back.

The drainage hole on my 440 Litre Westinghouse is blocked, tried unblocking it with no success. Sitting there awaiting funds for the service man.

Does the compressor cycle on and off?

I have just turned it back on and the fridge and freezer are cold so put some food back in and see if it cycles.

Is it cyclic defrost?  Is the timer to defrost t working?

I'm betting dead fan and/or dead defrost timer (even frost frees have a defrost timer).

My 10yo Westinghouse did this last year.  Unfortunately each went within 2wks of the other.  Threw out a lot of food.

Blow compressed air up the drain tube from behind / underneath the fridge, but be prepared for some rubbish to be blown into the fridge are from the drain

At the moment everything seems fine. Fan is working and fridge is cycling drain hole is clear. Just have to keep an eye out for frost build up. At the moment beers cold and food frozen.

Keep an eye on the air ports between the fridge and freezer, if they start to frost up first than more then likely the frost heater around these sports are not working, if the coil frosts up(as in your picture) first than it could be one of three things, defrost timer, thermostat or the fridge could be low on gas, the last will mean that the unit will not get cold enough to actually operate the thermostat and as it keeps running the coil frosts up and the airflow stops, suggest you contact a domestic fridge mechanic
