I appreciate buyer beware, but this is happening more and more. I found this news report alarming. You just don't know what you're getting, even with late model cars. What is the solution to this matter?

Yep, especially Prados, they are being stolen on the east coast, moved to the west coast and being rebirthed from wrecks. There was a similar article about them a couple of months ago.

Why just WA and not other states? Is it a simple law change too fix the problem that doesn't currently exist in WA?

Used to be rife in Vic too, but new laws with the write off register has made it too hard now.
Years ago a mate worked in Thomastown and the workshop nextdoor got raided. These boys would nick HSV's, carefully strip them down to an almost bare shell and engine block. Dump the body where it would be quickly found, wait a few weeks/months for it to pop up at an insurance auction, win with a bid of a few grand. Then back to the workshop for reassmbly with it's genuine parts, sold weeks later fully legit for a tidy profit.

In vic for a repairable write off you need a VIV (vehicle identification validation). Confirms has been done safely and it is the same car.

If the change for WA is that simple, why don't they do it instead of creating Police Taskforces to try and enforce it? 8)

WA = Wait Awhile ;D

We bought a car from an auction centre, but it was a fixed price purchase.
couldnt test drive it, anyway on the way home the steering wobbled at 80 plus.
I eventually noticed the front wheel on the left is closer to the rear guard than the drivers side..
took it to my old mate who runs the local panel beaters, they chased up the history of the car, found out it was in a bad smash, and found the "K" frame bent and wasnt replaced in the repair.
They chased up the old insurance company that paid for the repair, got the car picked up from them on the back of a tilt tray (We live in the country) had it fixed and carted back, all paid for by the old insurance company..
a few years later and the car has been fine. drips oil out of the auto though.
boot lid is a little out of shape. but works fine.
