Title: What didn't you buy that could now be worth a fortune!
Post by: Mace on October 25, 2013, 07:57:24 PM
Had to laugh at some of the answers to the what did you buy that's completely worthless thread, but then got thinkin about the opposite.

So, we all know the deal, what did you pass up on that at the time seemed a reasonable decision?

Me, that's easy.  In 1980, brought myself a brand spankin new VC V8 Commodore. cost me nearly $8 grand.  For a day or so, thought about keeping the old LC Torana I had, and buying something  different that I has seen in a car yard in the city. It was a big ask at the time, $12 grand, so I came to my senses and went for the commode.  Even stuck a Ferrari gear knob on it (after shortening the lever by 2 inches to give a nice gear throw) to remind me of the non purchase.

Yep, you guessed it, I passed up one of these! It was an early 69 version, going on 12 years old.

What's your story?

I missed out on buying a shop for about $400K in 2003. That property has just been resumed at the nice price of about $2mill......great result given the gfc and smashing that prices took

When in my teens used to camp on a farm at the junction of the Ovens and Murray rivers owned by Frank Elliott, when he sold the farm he offered us first dibs on a water front block. That place is now called Bundalong and you can't get anything on the water for under a mill now, think his offer was 20 grand . Kicking myself everytime I go up there, will be kicking myself next weekend again

Don't talk to me for property advice.  Bought my first home at the crazy peak of the Melbourne property boom in the early 00's, then bought the next house abouth 12 months before the GFC when prices dropped for the first time ever!  Can't complain too much, made a very tidy profit on the 1st house in under 4 years.

A few car regrets over the years.  Back in the early/mid 90's had a choice between an XD Fairmont V8 and a mint unmolested, 1 owner XA Fairmont coupe with a 2V 250.  Went the XD, cause I wanted a newer can and a V8!  Both were the same price.

in about 1978/79 I was offered the Torana GTR-XU1 that Brocky lost Bathurst (when Dough Chivas ran out of petrol) from 1973

It didn't have the HDT livery but it was all there, triple 58mm webers using the one choke, spare diff ratios, gearboxes. everything...

I thought that seeing as I already had a hotted up Torana this one would be too hard to live with for on road use

They owner was a fella up the sunny coast and I met him at Lakeside one day when he was racing the car, he was asking $3,500 the lot.....

oh the humanity!

Many years ago when I was only just married ... Brother and I were offered a large parcel of land for $50,000 each with another 4 guys.... Couldn't justify it at the time - no cash - no house then - so said no ..
They built Keysborough shopping town on it a few years later   :-[ :-[ :-[
Mandrake ...
